Trouble in Paradise Chapter 3

The whole situation with William was making me a little crazy, but I was well aware of the fact that I couldn’t stop now. I had started with just eavesdropping, but I had graduated to criminal tresing and added some unauthorized computer access for good measure. Although no one had caught me doing those things, looking back I could see my actions were pretty far from the standard operating protocol of a normal human being. But this was Will it was all about.

I had almost made myself forget about him in the time we were apart, but since that weird conversation I overheard in the tea room, I couldn’t get him out of my head. So that girl of his couldn’t make him perform in the bedroom—it was something inside his head and after trying various solutions, they were convinced now that the only thing that could make him better was trance, hypnosis and conditioning. It sounded too weird, but I wanted to know more and that’s why I made sure to get those e-mails forwarded to me. Only when I read all the research did I finally start believing in the thing they were doing to him. Well, he was doing it to himself if I was to be precise.

The whole procedure was built around his willingness to deal with his problems in any possible way, including breaking down some barriers deep inside his mind. The method was designed to counter traumatic events or deep-seated beliefs that were just too strong for people to overcome. Something like that was probably the source of Will’s problems in the bedroom and although they didn’t discuss it in the e-mails, I pieced together that he was unable to perform sexually, even though he was perfectly healthy physically and very willing mentally.

The whole thing was making him even more nervous to a point where going over it with various therapists actually made the issue even worse and this was a solution was supposed to resolve the problem at its roots, at least in theory.

First, he would just attune himself to the relaxing melody that would take care of the nervousness. If everything went well, just playing the music would calm him down to a point where he would forget about the troubles and the awkwardness of it all. That was a pretty basic technique, but obviously not strong enough by itself. That was where the affirmations came in. A few sentences that he would repeat to himself to remind his own mind why he was doing all of it—because he chose to and because he wanted help from others, so he had to open up to receive that help and not resist it. Doing it for weeks should have made his mind ready to receive the help he needed, but this was also where the first warnings came in.

Studies on this method had made it pretty clear that it should only be used in a safe and controlled environment where the subject’s conditioning wouldn’t be contaminated by any outside influence. And they were also urging that it should only be employed with people who trust each other because with that receptive mind there came hazards—unwanted contamination if the procedure wasn’t done properly, or even the potential for abuse, if someone untrustworthy was close to the subject. It wasn’t that dangerous at this stage, but it could do some serious harm in the next phase. At least that’s what scientists seemed to think.

The next stage was introducing others who should help the subject to overcome his fears and problems. Acquiring the help of partners, friends, or trusted professionals was key at this point, since the patient was often unable to deal with his problems alone, but he had to work on accepting the help of others and become more receptive to their efforts. Which was a great method of , but this was where the danger skyrocketed. Leaving this to someone who wasn’t skilled could have a catastrophic result, but even worse would be if someone with impure motives were to gain access to the subject, because at this point, he would be very receptive and open to suggestions. Apparently, a lot of harm could be done here.

Just reading that warning made me dive deep into the research and I spent days immersed in researching the method. I was still not an expert, but I had a much better understanding of how it could be exploited. I wished I could have tested those theories in some way, but there was only a limited window where I could insert myself in this process and it was slowly closing. I frantically started working with my recording equipment, trying to produce a high-quality recording that I could swap with the original and while doing that, I realized that I was exactly the threat all those scientists were worried about.

I wasn’t about to just sabotage the thing accidentally; I wasn’t a random bystander with no agenda. That would be bad enough, but I was the worst possible thing that could happen. I had knowledge of the process, a preceding relationship with the subject and my own objective that differed from the initial process goal. Well, not entirely—I still wanted Will to perform in the bedroom, but I wanted him to fuck me when that happened. And I could’ve never achieved that without stumbling onto this treasure.

William had decided to place his trust in this process and into everyone involved by extension. He wanted to open his mind so they could help him and he wanted to be conditioned to overcome his problems. That was why the voice of his loved one Katherine had already acquired a certain power over him, as well as the therapist, Danielle. He needed their help, he wanted to trust them so badly, so he allowed their voices to sway him and that was the place where I slipped in last time I was there.

It was risky from start to finish, but I couldn’t come up with anything better. I approached him while he was still under the influence of his session and did it while no one saw me going into his house—the backyard approach. If it all fell apart right there and then, I would have run, jumped the fence and never gone back again, but at that point he was already conditioning himself to stay calm around that music for weeks. After that it was just a matter of keeping him talking and using some of the phrases he responded to, altering his perception of the situation just a little and carefully pushing myself back into his orbit. There wasn’t much more I could do, but another critical part came right at the end.

I knew from the e-mails, that he was listening to his evening files via headphones. Which meant no one would ever find out if they were slightly altered. I needed a minute alone with his phone and he could easily have said no to that. But at that point I had lulled him into a state of calm security and he didn’t have a problem with lending it to me and after I ed the new files in there, I excused myself to minimize interruptions and let him enjoy the relaxing music for a couple of more minutes.

I was still quite nervous after that, because I wasn’t sure if he would get angry at me later in the day, when the effects wore off. When I didn’t receive any calls or messages, I relaxed a little, but then evening came and the uneasy feeling crept back.

What if I fucked up? What if he noticed the changes? What if someone else found out somehow? But again, no calls came and there was no one knocking on my door. After that I was immediately overcome by the craving to go back and monitor the changes in his behavior, but that was stupid of course. It would take some time for those files to work and even then; it wouldn’t be noticeable just from looking. And the less I was wandering around that house, the better. I didn’t need some nosy neighbor to spot me and report to Katherine. I had to lay low and wait.

A week wasn’t enough time to make big changes, but I needed to see Will before his fiancée came back and I had to make sure there was at least some progress. And depending on what I saw, I would decide on future steps. I wished the annoying girl would stay away for longer period, but I guess I should consider myself lucky that she went away during such a critical part of Will’s conditioning. It was great that her work was distracting her this much, and I just hoped it would do so in the future as well. If it didn’t, maybe there was a way for me to make it more difficult to notice something was going on. Hmm, that was an interesting idea. I needed more time to think about that.

* * *

The week went by in a flash. I had a lot of work assigned to me and I did my best to resolve the most urgent tasks so I wouldn’t be drowned in assignments when Kathy came back. I was missing her quite a lot already and although we talked daily over the phone, it just wasn’t the same. Maybe because I was troubled by keeping secrets from her. It wasn’t like I always told her everything that happened, but this was different. A girl who tried to make me cheat on her had entered our house and I didn’t tell her about the visit.

Don’t get me wrong, I was about to, multiple times within that one week, but then I ed my promise to give Iris a chance to apologize to Kathy by herself. It seemed really important to her and she appeared to be genuine about her atonement, so I decided to give her that chance. But then I realized that it was manipulative behavior. She had used my good nature and pushed me into a situation where I was forced to choose between my promise and the trust of my partner. And she had framed it like telling the truth would worsen her chances to apologize, just to make me feel guilty. She always had this tendency to scheme, so I should’ve noticed her doing it, but I was caught off guard by her sudden appearance. There was no use crying about it now. She would be arriving soon and I would make sure to let her know that behavior like this wouldn’t fly if she wanted to have any chance to redeem herself in my eyes.

Since Iris told me that she would visit at the same time, I made sure to get up early, got all my work done and started with my morning relaxation so I would be finished early and have some time to recover before her arrival.

It was so automatic—I was immediately swimming in waves of relaxation, repeating my mantras. This whole thing was getting more and more effective and I was feeling it. I wanted it to work; I needed it to work so my life would finally click together and I could be happy. The soothing melody was swirling around and around and I felt calm, secure and content.

Until the tapping sound intruded onto my experience and it took me a minute to realize that Iris was at the back door again. The music was still playing and I felt woozy. I couldn’t decide what to do, but the knocking was too insistent and I decided to go open the door instead of stopping it first. It should end any minute now anyway. I opened the door and stared at Iris.

She was dressed in a cute outfit consisting of a pink spaghetti crop top, a yellow checkered skirt and she also wore a denim jacket; it was still cold outside. It took me a few seconds to put it all together, but I realized why it all looked so familiar. She used to dress like this in school when we were still best friends and it immediately took me back to those days. She used to have different hair back then, but I always thought she looked cute even before she moved to more elegant outfits. Every time we hung out, she attracted looks and I always wondered why she spent so much time with me instead of other guys. Well, I was clueless back then.

“Aren’t you going to invite me in?” she asked quietly and I realized I’ve been staring.

“Sure, Iris. Come in,” I stepped aside and closed the door behind her.

“I hope you won’t mind me being here a little earlier, it just happened that way,” she shrugged innocently.

I looked at the wall clock and realized that she had arrived way earlier than expected. There was still an hour left of the relaxation melody I should’ve enjoyed before she interrupted me. No wonder I was this confused—it was like a deep sleep that I didn’t fully wake up from.

“I’m just going to stop the music,” I nodded my head towards the sound system, but Iris stopped me.

“No, just leave it on, I don’t mind it at all, it is such a soothing melody, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, it is, but...” I stopped myself from finishing the thought out loud. The doctor had urged me to do this relaxation alone for a reason, but I didn’t want to explain the whole thing to Iris.

“I don’t want to intrude any more than necessary and you probably put it on for some reason,” she smiled politely. “It seems perfectly suited for two old friends talking, so please leave it on. I want you to feel safe and relaxed around me, there is nothing you need to change.”

I opened my mouth to protest and then closed it again. It still felt weird to listen to the melody while someone was around, but I didn’t have a good explanation for why I should turn it off, at least nothing came to my mind in this dreamy state. And I did feel calm and safe; at least way more than when she appeared out of the blue the last time. I offered her a drink and I sat down in my chair, while she moved onto the couch next to me.

“I’m glad you’ve agreed to see me again, Will. I know the first time was kind of a shock, but I wanted to make things better between us and I didn’t know what to do.”

“So, you decided to sneak into my backyard?” I asked curiously about the thing that was still bothering me.

“I know it was stupid, but I was so worried about this,” she said with a small voice and frowned. “I just wanted to make sure I spoke to you first and not alarm anyone. I truly wanted to apologize for my behavior and I wanted to approach you safely, even if it ended up being weird.”

“You’ve tresed on our property,” I objected. “That doesn’t seem to be a healthy way to solve problems.”

“Yeah, I know,” she cleared her throat and spoke louder. “But I did it all to make things better between us, you need to trust me.”

“I need to trust you?” I repeated her words thoughtfully. She had been talking quietly up until now, but I was taken aback by how different her voice sounded.

“Yes, William. Why else would I go through so much trouble to see you?” her tone got more insistent. “I did it all just to apologize and fix our relationship. Everything I did was in the service of that one goal.”

I looked at her, trying to discern her sincerity. Her actions seemed weird and there had to be a simpler way to do all this, a more civilized way, but at the same time, I could see a desperate person doing something like this. And if she went that far, maybe there was really something to her words.

“I understand, Iris,” I said with a sigh. “I just wish you would stop doing unnecessary things like that,” I added and wanted to put more emphasis into my words, show some anger and frustration, but I couldn’t hold onto those feelings. The soothing melody was still playing in the background and it was preventing me from being riled up at all. Even the mild annoyance was slowly fading away.

“Of course, Will,” she put her hand on my forearm. “You know how I am sometimes; I get too intense if I care about things. I’ll try to dial it down, but if I do something crazy again, I need you to that I am doing this because I care about our relationship. You need to trust me about this.”

I met her gaze and tried to think about it as a rational person. She always used to be a little too ionate, I knew that. That’s why I tried to make sure she wouldn’t do something stupid again. Her response seemed agreeable at first glance, but I realized she didn’t promise to dial things down. Normally I would push the issue, make her promise to not do anything, but it seemed like too much of a bother. And there was also something about the way she phrased it—if she got too intense because she cared about our relationship, was it really a problem? I got lost in my thoughts and I had trouble ing where I wanted to go with this line of thought. Just sitting in my living room with the music in the background was making me relaxed and carefree.

“Sorry, what did you say?” I asked meekly, itting to my distracted state.

“Don’t worry about that, Will,” she smiled and patted my arm. “I just want you to that if I’m doing something a little off, it is only because I want things between us to get better, trust me.”

“I trust you,” I responded automatically. This wasn’t the point I wanted to arrive at, but I was too distracted at the moment to argue with her. And maybe it really made sense that she did all this only to get closer to me.

“Thank you, William,” she squeezed my arm lightly and then continued lightly caressing my forearm. “I just want you to feel calm and safe with me, unbothered by unnecessary things.”

I had nothing to add to that. I was in my home with a soothing melody playing in the background and I felt exactly the way she described it—calm and safe. I had worked weeks to feel this way and although the relaxation was meant for my alone time, it didn’t matter right now. I was just happy to not be in any kind of conflict with Iris and sat there, enjoying my moment of peace, feeling more and more relaxed.

“Isn’t this nice?” Iris continued talking. “Just being among friends and enjoying the moment of peace. No need to worry about anything. Just talking and listening.”

I had to it it did feel nice. We didn’t do anything special, we didn’t even talk that much for that matter, but somehow the more I listened to her, the better I felt about the situation between us, though we still had a way to go.

“Friends?” I objected. “I’m not sure we are there yet, Iris.”

“I know, Will,” she nodded. “But doesn’t this remind you of the time we spent time together? The time we were friends? Just think about it for a second.”

Those were the days—just the two of us hanging out, doing stupid stuff and talking about whatever. It was a great time and when she reminded me of it, I realized that the situation really felt reminiscent of that. Somehow, I had moved from a detached stance to a more friendly, accepting place without even realizing it. I had planned to scold her when she returned, but I ended up agreeing with some of her points instead. And now I felt much more comfortable with the situation.

“I miss those days,” I said with a smile, revealing my suddenly nostalgic mood.

“I miss them too, Will, don’t worry about that. We will make it happen again and I will try to do my best to earn your trust back. But until then, could you just think of me as a friend even if we have been apart this long?”

“I don’t know...” something about the way she insisted on this matter made me uncomfortable, but I was unable to hold onto that feeling and it slowly faded away. I didn’t want to be bothered; I just needed to relax.

“I just want you to feel safe, calm and that you are among friends, Will. Wouldn’t that be great?” she kept stroking my forearm and it felt pleasant.

“Among friends,” I echoed her words in a whisper while the soothing melody played in the background. That was exactly what I was trying to do, right? Making myself calmer and at peace with everything. To get rid of all the troubles that made my life harder.

“That’s right, Will. You are among friends. Just , how great we were together, I am still your friend, right?” Iris continued talking.

There was something flawed about her logic, but I had trouble making sense of it. We used to be close in the past but that didn’t automatically mean that we were close now, right? But at the same time, I had to it I felt great being around her. Relaxed and safe, at the place where I was always surrounded by people that cared for me. If she wanted to be my friend so badly again, could I really blame her for that? I didn’t want to push her away—I never wanted that and I hated how we parted ways, but that was because she acted crazy. Just thinking about it used to make me incredibly angry, but now it barely stirred any feeling at all.

“I’m not sure, Iris...” I whispered, trying to get my thoughts together, but it was hard. I was slowly slipping back into my relaxed state.

“Then just listen to me, Will. Focus on my voice and I will help you,” her intonation changed into a familiar rhythm. “I am here to help you and I always want the best for you. I’ve made some mistakes in the past, but I will remedy all of them. Just give me a chance to do better and I will be here for you when you forgive me. Because that’s what friends do.”

“That’s what friends do,” I nodded in agreement, friends cared for each other. At least that made sense.

“Friends forgive and they forget about shortcomings when they apologize. I really want you to see me as your friend again, Will and I hope I can earn your trust back. You just need to think of me as your friend too. Wouldn’t you feel much better if that were the case?”

I pondered her question—of course it would be much better if it worked like that. If I could just think of Iris as my friend and forget about the awful thing she had done to me. I was no longer angry about it though, so maybe I was finally prepared to get over it. Was it because she sincerely apologized? What was I to do now? Was I supposed to forgive her? My thoughts were sluggish and I couldn’t decide.

“Iris, I...” I started talking, but she interrupted me.

“Shh, don’t worry about it and listen to my voice, William. I’m here to help you and I can do that if you just keep your mind open to what I have to say. You don’t need to speak, just relax and let me do the work for you.”

The soothing melody was still playing in the background and while it was on, being calm and relaxed just came very easily. And there was something about the way Iris talked that made me want to hear more. That voice of hers just fitted perfectly within the melody and I found myself nodding along to her words.

“That’s it, Will. Just let go and focus on my voice,” she continued to talk with the same rhythm as before. “This isn’t a place to be unhappy. You are safe at your home, comfortable and surrounded by people you can trust. Isn’t that right?”

I nodded again, feeling the relaxation coming over me. The melody and familiar words had that effect on me. Iris kept talking and I realized that my eyes were getting heavy, but that was only to be expected. I was just slipping back into my relaxation, the one I had gotten used to during these past weeks.

“Nothing bad or weird is happening here, Will. You are just where you want to be, doing the thing you want to do. And I am here to help you; my voice is helping you to achieve your goal. And you know that this voice belongs to your friend. Just focus on me talking and realize it is true.”

My eyes were closed and it made my other senses sharper. Only then it finally hit me; of course, I knew this familiar voice, I have heard it in a recording multiple times, but it was also Iris’s voice and I felt close connection to it now. That voice did belong to my friend—it had a ring of truth to it.

“Just keep listening and everything will be better, William. You want to hear my voice because it just makes you feel so good. Forget about everything else, forget about your doubts, bad memories, disappointment. Just enjoy the good things. Being around me always felt great and it can be amazing again, but only if you let me back in. And it is so easy to do that; you just need to forgive me and I will be your friend again. You don’t want to think about the bad memories anyway, it’s much easier to push them into the back of your mind and forget about them.”

It all made sense—I was here to relax and enjoy the peace of my home. There was no point in being stressed and reminiscing about the worst things that had happened in my life. I didn’t want to think about them anyway and it was better to push them further in the back of my mind, to a place where I would no longer care about them.

“Bad memories have no place in here. It’s better if you don’t think about them; forget that they ever happened. Focus only on the good, on the things that bring you joy—feeling safe and calm, and surrounded by friends.”

Tension was leaving my body and I was now completely relaxed, comfortable and safe. It felt so natural to slip back into a trance without even realizing I’ve done so. It was a little different with Iris being here, but the way she talked was just a perfect fit for the experience and I was having a nice time listening to her words.

She was right—I didn’t want to bring up the bad, I just wanted to feel good and forget all the trouble, all those experiences that brought stress into my life. So, I pushed them all even further, deeper and built a wall to separate them from my thoughts. It was so easy to do when I was this relaxed and I wondered, why I didn’t do that sooner.

“Isn’t this so much better, Will? Those bothersome memories just weigh you down and you don’t want them in your life. You want to be happy when you relax and you want to be happy when you are fully awake. You deserve to be happy and surrounded by friends. And you can have that if you never think about the past again—forget about the bad things I’ve done to you. Whenever your mind goes back there, just think about how pleasant the times we spent together were. You don’t want the negative, just the positive and you can get it by ing me as your friend.”

I could barely keep up with what she was talking about—I vaguely ed our disagreement in the past, but it made me feel uncomfortable and I didn’t care for that. I just wanted to enjoy some quality time spent with my friend. The soothing melody was still playing in the background and I felt better than ever.

“So, tell me, William. How do you feel about me?” Iris asked softly and it took me a moment to realize she was expecting some kind of reaction.

“You are my friend, Iris,” I whispered, feeling happy about having her back in my life.

“Yes, I am,” she responded confidently and sounded pleased with my answer. “So here we are, in your home where you can calm down, feel safe and you are among friends, isn’t that right?”

“It is, Iris,” I replied. Those were the words from my mantras and they sounded so right in my mind, that I couldn’t do anything else but agree.

“Very good, William. Just keep listening to the soothing melody and relax. I know you are a smart guy, so I’m sure you will be receptive and agreeable towards the things I’m about to tell you.”

“Receptive and agreeable, yes,” I echoed another of my mantras. That was just what I was supposed to be.

“Perfect. Focus on my voice, William. It is here to help you—this is a voice of your friend, a voice you want to listen to,” she had fallen back into that familiar rhythm.

“I want to listen to the voices of my friends,” I repeated, realizing that I had heard her voice, saying just those words.

“Yes, you do. And more importantly, you need to trust my voice, Will,” she added with urgency.

I’ve also heard that statement before. My fiancée told me that I needed to trust the voice, my therapist told me the same thing and Iris’s voice was always there to accompany those two. It didn’t make sense, but at the same time, I had to trust my friends. Everything I did in these past weeks hinged on me being more receptive and agreeable and I’ve opened my mind to make things better. I couldn’t step back now. I needed the help of my friends and this voice was here to help me.

“I need to trust your voice, Iris,” I whispered finally.

“That’s right, Will,” a hint of satisfaction appeared in her tone. “I am your friend and the things I tell you are for your own good. You don’t need to examine them, you don’t want to doubt them, you just want to believe in your friend. This is all part of the process, to trust your friends and accept their help. I am here for you.”

It felt amazing to hear her talk about how she wanted to make everything better and I realized how much I missed her being in my life. I couldn’t why we were apart for so long, but she was back now and everything was just perfect.

“Listen to me, William. I am here for you and you’ll believe that everything I do is for your benefit. Even if I do some unusual things, you’ll know that I mean good and you’ll think that I’m just a bit of an eccentric. You’ll always extend me the benefit of a doubt even if you discover something you would deem suspicious otherwise. That’s because you care about me deeply and you know that I want only the best for you, do you understand?”

“Yes, Iris,” I replied softly. It sounded a little pushy, but she only wanted to help in her own way and I had to accept that.

“Very good. I’ll tell you some important things now and I want you to repeat each and every one of them for me, can you do that, Will?”

“Yes, Iris,” I agreed immediately.

* * *

The first thing I did while Will was still in a trance was to extend the timer on his music by a few hours, making sure I had plenty of time and his soothing melody track wouldn’t end prematurely. I had a lot of conditioning prepared and I needed time. I couldn’t really do anything severe in one session and I couldn’t really add much, but I could insert myself into a preexisting architecture that his therapist built for him. So, I started with reinforcing my status as his friend and slipping myself and my voice into the set of people he trusted and I made sure to push away every bad feeling he had about me.

But I also needed some leeway in the future in case I screwed up in some way, which was bound to be happen, so I made sure that he would overlook some of it and he wouldn’t be alarmed if I moved too fast. Instilling the belief that I was weird but I meant well was helping in that regard. But I still had to keep hiding in the shadows and that was the hardest thing to do. Preventing him from talking about me with anyone and not being suspicious about it. I decided to just follow up my initial suggestion—that I wanted to apologize to Katherine and I needed more time to prepare myself.

I framed it in a way that I wanted to know her better before I approached her, so Will would be open to talking with me about his fiancée. I just hoped this suggestion didn’t clash with anything inside his mind, since I made him forget—well, more like not to think—about the time I tried to sleep with him, but it looked like his mind was able to make sense of my suggestions somehow and he agreed to not talk with anyone about me, which was the outcome I needed.

The whole thing took hours and I ended up totally exhausted, but happy with my work. Only then was I finally comfortable with slowly bringing him out of the trance. I just made sure he didn’t think too much about what he was told when he relaxed. And also that he didn’t mind spending more than four hours with me.

“Thank you for such a nice talk,” I said when it looked like he was finally awake.

“No, thank you, Iris,” he smiled at me dreamily. “I feel amazing.”

“Glad to hear that. I have to run now, but we should do this again soon, call me?” I tilted my head. “The sooner, the better.”

“Oh, I sure will,” he nodded.

“Well come here then,” I spread my arms and he went in for an embrace without any hesitation.

Amazing—he wouldn’t even talk to me a while back, and after a few weeks of this therapy, and I had him in my arms. I only imagined what more I could do with him if I played my cards right. I ran my hands over his muscled back and thought about how it would feel if I could strip that annoying T-shirt and run my nails over his exposed muscles.

“Uhm, Iris?” he objected awkwardly.

“Shh, just stay still. I missed you, isn’t it great to have a friend this close?” I couldn’t help myself and ran my nails over his back, scratching the back of his neck.

“It feels great, but this isn’t appropriate,” he objected, but I noticed he didn’t pull away from the embrace.

Good. I stopped myself from pushing any further and finally broke the hug, taking a step away. I noticed his face was a little flushed, but he was still smiling. I could work with that. I grabbed his hand and squeezed it one more time.

“I already miss you,” I smiled at him. “Call me tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow,” he nodded obediently.

Yeah, I could work with that.
