Trouble in Paradise Chapter 1

It all started when I was simply minding my own business in the corner of my favorite tea room. It was more of a broom closet than a real room, and I could only stay in there because I knew the owner well. It was a quiet place that most of the customers didn’t even know about, which made my days much better because no one dared to bother me back here. I had even to go to the front desk if I wanted to order something, so I was often being forgotten about for hours, which suited me just fine. I was immersed in my work when I heard a familiar voice.

I was perfectly soundproofed against the commotion of the tea room, so the only voices that could reach me had to come from a small private lounge—a special room that was separated from the main rooms, which meant it was next to my broom closet. Normally, I wouldn’t be bothered by that but there was something about the voice that made me straighten up, and I leaned closer to the thin partition that separated me from the lounge. Two women were conversing silently, but I knew at least one of them.

“Thank you for meeting me here, Danielle. I know this isn’t your usual place of business, but I needed something informal, just the two of us to talk about William.”

I quickly recognized the voice of that bitch. It was Katherine, the person I hated most on this earth because she stole my guy. Will and I went way back; we knew each other from preschool and we were really tight for a long time. But just before university, this girl rolled into town, all fancy and posh. She charmed him away from me and made me feel like I was the lowest of the low. I tried to make one last play for William after that, but let’s say it didn’t end well. Since then, he had cut ties with me and didn’t even want to talk.

“Of course, Katherine. But you should know that my office is perfectly suited for talks like this. We could discuss concerns about your partner there.”

I raised my eyebrow. From the sidelines they always looked like a perfect pair, but could there be something hiding under the surface? Was there trouble in paradise? I pressed my ear to that partition just so I could hear every word they said.

“I know, Danielle. But offices are so, well, sterile. I wanted something friendlier; I hope you don’t mind. And nobody will overhear or bother us here. I paid extra for privacy.”

“Of course I don’t mind, we are friends. I want only the best for you two, and if you feel comfortable here, I can work with that. Now tell me exactly where your problem with William lies.”

“It’s a little embarrassing.”

“Don’t worry, I’ve heard it all. This is a safe space, and I won’t judge you.”

“Well, to be honest, the problem is an intimate nature. He is having a really hard time relaxing and enjoying himself in the bedroom, and it’s becoming a real issue.”

Wow. I had to bite my lip just to keep from bursting out laughing at that revelation. I never dated him properly and the furthest I got with William was a few kisses and hugs, but I would never have expected something like this. Will always looked so confident, having everything under perfect control. And his body? It was the stuff of legends. Every time our university beach volleyball team practiced, the bleachers were lined with girls who just went there for the show, and William was the main star.

“Certainly, these issues are not easy to deal with, but you told me that you’ve already tried some things?” Danielle asked. Clearly, she wasn’t in the loop, which was great, because her questions would give me the complete picture.

“Yeah, we talked about it and tried regular therapy. We made insignificant progress, even though we had been working on it for months. And I decided,” Katherine coughed and then corrected herself: “We decided that we need a faster solution, or at least a more effective one.”

What the hell were they talking about? I didn’t know this Danielle girl, but what kind of a help could she offer? Was she some kind of a sex therapist? I bit my lip as another idea entered my mind—could she be a prostitute, brought it to widen their horizons? Then I forced myself back to a reality; this wasn’t a dirty movie and the conversation continued.

“My methods are effective, but I am surprised, you have always been skeptical about them, Kathy.”

“I still am, but at the same time, we are running out of options, and I want to try whatever helps.”

“It’s not only about you, though. What about William? Is he willing to participate in this?”

“He is as unhappy with the situation as I am, maybe more. He wasn’t keen on bringing another person in. But he will do it, if we both agree that this thing can work.”

“So, you still have your reservations?”

“I do. Sorry, but it still feels like something from a fantasy movie.”

Their conversation was getting weirder, and the partition creaked as I pushed it carelessly in an effort to hear their every word. I froze immediately and held my breath.

“What was that? Where did the sound come from?”

The question was followed by silence and I was suddenly aware that I was sweating and my heart was racing like crazy.

“This place is old; it was probably just the wood settling. You really seem stressed, Kathy.”

“Maybe I am,” she responded, and I finally let out a quiet sigh of relief.

“You were saying that you doubt my methods.”

“How can I not? A certified therapist got nowhere with him, and I am expected to believe that a few swings of a pocket watch will magically make everything better?”

I bit my lip and continued listening. I couldn’t believe I had run into this conversation purely by accident and I realized my heart was still racing, this time with excitement though. Were they really talking about hypnotizing Will?

“The way you put it, it really sounds like something from a stupid movie. This isn’t a magic trick; it involves concentration, conditioning, and an open mind. I don’t offer any shortcuts to you, it may still take months to resolve your situation, but we can do this together.”

“Really, you can promise me that even before you have even met him? I know it is your specialty, but still, it almost sounds too good to be true.”

“It is possible, but that is precisely why I asked if you both want to do it. He needs to go into this willingly and with an open mind and he will need your full for it to work. So, you have to be fully committed to this.”

“Sorry. I still have some doubts.”

“That is perfectly fine as long as you are willing to work on a solution. You still have the wrong idea about my techniques. How about a little demonstration?”

“Here? Now?” Katherine’s voice suddenly sounded worried. Interesting, so she wanted to subject William to something she was afraid of herself?

“Again, I can see from your reaction that you are thinking of some stupid movie rules. This is a slow process, and any participant has to want to move every step of the way. I can’t make you do anything you don’t want to. Just give me ten minutes to demonstrate. And that you are doing this for your partner.”

“You are right, I’m being childish. Tell me what to do.”

“We’ve already established you find pocket watches tacky, so let’s not use that. But to at least stay close to classic interpretations, let’s use something traditionally associated with this kind of a thing. We should find something you find relaxing, so tell me; do you like spirals, crystals, candles, metronomes?”

“The last one. Metronome, I mean. My father had one and I always thought the sound was relaxing.”

I was getting even more excited. Was Katherine about to be hypnotized here? Would she cluck like a chicken? Or get some posthypnotic suggestion? A word that would send her to sleep? That would be amazing.

“Perfect, we will use that sound then. Let me just play it on my phone.”

“And what should I do?”

“Nothing special. Just listen to my voice and consider my words. I will guide you through this short experience.”

I could barely hear the faint sounds coming from the other side after that. There was a silent but insistent ticking of the metronome, but even the thin barrier was enough to dampen the sound. Danielle also lowered her voice, and I could only hear fragments of her calm sentences.

“…you have chosen to do this…”

“…be open to the experience…”

“…this sound was able to relax you; it will always help you to calm down…”

I could barely hear anything after that because whatever she was telling her, it was too quiet for me to overhear. I couldn’t tell how long it took, but my excitement quickly transformed into boredom and I had to force myself not to slacken up and lean on the partition again. I didn’t want to produce more suspicious sounds. I almost jumped out of my skin when Danielle raised her voice again.

“And that was basically it. How do you feel, Kathy?”

“Wow, that was amazing,” her response came after a short pause. “I was so relaxed, like all the stress left my body.”

“This was nothing more than a guided meditation, but now you have at least an idea of what I am really doing. You trusted the process, opened your mind, and were willing to work on your problem, and I was there to guide you. Of course, this was just a simple matter of calming you for a short while, this is not a long-term solution.”

“But it can work.”

“It can and it will. But you two being on board means everything. William has to have your full on this, and he needs to work on his problems with a voice he trusts. I can initiate the process, but you two are vital components of this process.”

“I’ll talk to him and I will do everything in my power to make this thing go away. Trust me, I don’t need a complication like this in my life. Can we start next week?”

“Sure. What day is best for you?”

“I think Thursday should be fine. Want us to come to your office this time?”

“No, in this case it’s actually better to do this in a place you both feel safe and secure. How about his house?”

“You mean our house?”

“Sure honey, I misspoke.”

“Don’t worry, Danny. I wasn’t offended. Our house it is. Next Thursday, say at three o’clock?”

“Perfect. And make sure to have the entire afternoon free. It’s better to not rush things in the beginning. We will proceed slowly and make sure everything feels right.”

“Will this take all evening and night as well?”

“Probably not,” the other woman laughed. “But we will be at this for hours, and it’s better to have spare time if the progress is slow.”

Could these two really be planning something as absurd as hypnotizing Will to perform in bed? I’ve never heard about something like that, but I also had to it it sounded exciting. I spent long minutes with my ear pressed against the partition, but those two had already moved to unimportant topics and small talk, and it looked like they wouldn’t be discussing anything exciting. I carefully sat down without making the faintest noise and thought about what this all meant to me. I had the exact time and place where this thing would happen. The question was what was I about to do with that?

* * *

It was Thursday, and I was crouching in a bush in the backyard of William’s house. So sue me. It wasn’t my proudest hour, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what was about to happen here today, so I left my work early, traversed a few fences and landed here. It wasn’t a particularly big bush, but I had a great view of the living room and I watched as the three people walked in.

First was, of course, William, a 6′ 2″ specimen made of sculpted muscle with short brown hair, bright blue eyes and a chiseled jaw. Looking as yummy as ever. Then his fiancée, Katherine—just a hair above five feet, with her platinum blond hair cut to her shoulders in a white sundress with flowers, looking innocent and lovely. And lastly, a woman who was a little older than expected, well over thirty. Slim, dressed in a pantsuit with rectangle glasses and her hair tied in a bun.

I thought back to my first outrageous idea, and although I knew that she wasn’t a prostitute they were bringing in, she was pretty enough to be one for sure. The high-end kind that catered to rich businessmen. They settled down in the middle of the living room, poured some tea and talked. I kept watching for another thirty minutes and they just seemed to have a pleasant conversation. Damn, this was way more boring than I expected it to be.

I stayed there, hidden in my bush, just scrolling through my phone and looking up from time to time to make sure nothing interesting was going on inside, but it was just more of the same. I was about to leave when I looked up and William was lying on the couch with his eyes closed and the woman was talking to him. Was it possible that the Danielle girl was really hypnotizing him right now and right there? Damn, that sounded hot in my head. I really wanted to know what she was saying to him. I could sneak closer to the house, but one look at those double-pane windows told me that I would hear nothing of what was going on inside.

Damn it, in for a penny, in for a pound. I knew it was a stupid and incredibly dangerous decision, but I just couldn’t stop here. I’ve been to this house many times when we were kids, and some of those times it was pretty late and against the wishes of his parents. There was a way to get inside without triggering the alarm and I could learn more about what was going on in there. I didn’t give myself time to think about it, because if I did, I would realize how bonkers this whole idea was.

Instead, I moved closer to the house, and climbed atop the shed to get just under the window of William’s old room. The window was open wide and I froze for a second, holding my breath. There was no one in the room and no one reacted to my presence, but there was no time to waste. I pulled myself up and climbed through the window. I could be pretty athletic if there was proper motivation and right now, I was very motivated. I quickly looked around the room and realized it didn’t change that much from the last time I was here. There were fewer toys, but the computer remained. Other than that, there was a bookcase, an open walk-in closet, a drawing table, and a whiteboard; it looked like he was using this room as a workspace.

I didn’t hear any alarmed noises from downstairs or outside, so I guessed my entry went unnoticed. I allowed myself a small sigh of relief and went to the partially open door. Some faint sounds were coming from the ground floor, but I couldn’t discern anything concrete. Damn this shit. I crouched and slowly, step by step approached the stairs to the ground floor. This was way beyond stupid even by my standards and I almost turned around a dozen of times, but still went on. I had to crawl to the middle of the staircase, and only then was I finally able to hear everything that was going on in the living room.

A faint melody was playing in the background; some kind of weird musical loop that repeated itself again and again with soft undertones. It sounded like some kind of generic relaxation music. I couldn’t hear Katherine’s voice, but the other woman was talking, and I could also hear William responding to her questions from time to time. They were both speaking calmly, quietly, and I had to strain my ears to hear their words.

“Do you really want to make this change?” That was Danielle.

“Yes, I do,” responded the voice of my Will.

“That is good, William. It is great that you want to put in the work and remove those barriers inside your mind. Your willingness is an important part of the process and this is where I can help you. Do you want my help?”

“Yes, I want your help.”

“Very good. Now, you should understand that it will not be quick and maybe not always comfortable for you to make changes. Are you okay with that?”

“Yes, I am okay with that.”

He was responding in a such a calm and relaxed manner, it really sounded like a trance from a movie. It was incredibly sexy and I felt kind of sad that I wasn’t able to see the expression on his face right now.

“Perfect, William. But you are not alone in this. You have people who want to help you that are always close to you. You have the safe space of your home. And you also have this relaxing melody that I have crafted for you. Listen to those soothing tones and relax. Every time you feel uncomfortable with something, annoyed at someone, or think that you are being pushed in the corner, this melody will help you relax. Let the music fill your mind. Can you feel the relaxation?”

“Yes,” he responded after a while. “I can feel the relaxation.”

“Very good. Now I want you to concentrate on this music and repeat after me: This melody will always calm me down.”

“This melody will always calm me down,” he repeated her words flatly.

“This melody will always make me feel safe.”

“This melody will always make me feel safe,” another emotionless repetition.

“Hearing this melody will always remind me that I am among friends.”

“Hearing this melody will always remind me that I am among friends,” damn, his voice was so hot right now.

“This melody will always make me more receptive and agreeable.”

“This melody will always make me more receptive and agreeable,” he responded again.

I couldn’t believe my own ears—this sounded more like some kind of brainwashing and I realized my hand went between my legs in the process of listening to his emotionless voice. It was like some kind of wild fantasy I never knew I had.

“Very good, William. Now keep repeating those sentences again and again and don’t mind us,” the woman said in a soothing tone, and Will started repeating those phrases from the top.

“This melody will always calm me down... This melody will always make me feel safe...”

I was so distracted by his voice that I barely heard the next whisper.

“Okay, let’s leave him here and go upstairs for a second.”

Upstairs? Shit! Fuck!

I didn’t know how much time I had, but it wasn’t a lot. And I couldn’t move fast or they would hear me. I crawled up the stairs, still on all fours, trying to be as fast and quiet as possible at the same time. When I reached the top of the stairs and tried to get up, my legs gave up on me. Damn it, they were still numb from me crouching on the stairs, and I could barely crawl. The whispering voices were coming closer while I got back to Will’s room. Fuck. What if they came here? I couldn’t risk climbing out of the window with my legs like this. I could break my neck. So, I did the next best thing—I hid inside the walk-in closet and closed the door behind me. My legs were tingling and I was breathing hard, but I managed to lie still while the two women entered the room. I could see their outline through the blinds of the door.

Luckily, none of them seemed the least bit interested in the closet and they went straight to the computer. They switched it on and Danielle inspected the hardware. After a minute of fiddling with settings, she brought the microphone closer to Katherine.

“Try saying something.”

She recorded her voice and then played the sentences back for her. They did this a few times over before she shook her head.

“Okay, these will suffice as samples. Could you send them to my e-mail?”

“Sure, I’ll do it right away,” Katherine nodded and sat down.

“Thank you. But it is as I have said; we need to record your voice in a professional studio and edit it with my gear. It will sound much better and there won’t be any interference. They will also have a much stronger effect when done properly.”

“Sounds complicated, but if it will help my William, I’ll do anything.”

“It will help, trust me. We should do the recording over this weekend; I’ll send you the finished files a few days after that. Can I reply to this e-mail?”

“Sure, I’ll just it here and plug it straight into our sound system. Can’t we do anything else until then?”

“Don’t rush this. William needs to be eased into this slowly and you don’t want to scare him or push too hard. He will get used to this melody first and it will help him relax. I’ve made this specially for him, so make sure he listens to it regularly and repeats his words. I’ve written them down for you.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet. This is just the beginning and it will take a long time before I earn your gratitude. Let’s go back downstairs. We have some more things to go over.”

And then they left as fast as they had entered. After another minute, I finally let out a relieved sigh. This almost ended up in a fucking disaster. There was more to be learned here, but I wasn’t going back down there. I almost had a heart attack crawling back up those stairs and hiding here. This was at the same time the most stressful and exciting thing I’ve done, but I’ve had about enough of this for now. Staying here for any longer would just be begging to be discovered and arrested, and I didn’t want to explain my presence here to anyone, nor was I fond of jail. I quietly crawled from the closet, and my eyes lingered on the screen of the still-running computer.

There was a way that I could follow up on what was happening here. Although chills still ran down my spine and I was worried about someone returning, I opened the e-mail client and set up a forwarding address for this mailbox; I would get a copy of every message sent to this e-mail. This was just perfect. Nobody ever checked these settings and I would be apprised of everything that was going on in here.

Then I made sure to return everything back the way I found it, closed the settings, and crawled down from the window. One last look from the bush showed me those three were still talking while I made my quick exit. There was a way to exploit this situation, though I wasn’t yet sure, how to do it properly. My excitement grew as I returned home and thought again and again about this weird and amazing day. I just hoped the e-mails would start arriving soon.
