“I can move my arms!” Ariel exclaimed at the realization she was no longer being constrained.

“Yes, you can,” the Queen took Ariel’s hand. “And if you would like to stand up you may do that too.”

Ariel stood still holding The Queen’s hand. “Why am I free? and why was I bound?” She asked.

“You were bound so that you would appreciate being free.” The Queen continued to speak in her calm confident voice. “Would you like to take a walk?”

“I get a choice?” Ariel looked confused.

“You have a choice Ariel,” the Queen stated calmly. “You can walk with me or you can see what the mirror now has to reveal to you. If you choose the mirror, you may see your past or you may see your future. That’s again for you to decide. Though that decision comes only after you’ve seen it.”

Ariel woke up covered in sweat. Her bed sheets were soaked with it too. “Who’s there? Why are you on top of me?”

“Ariel, calm down, it’s me Jess, you were dreaming again and I was snapping you out oof it.” Jess scooted her feet so she could stand up on the floor. “I was just really worried about you.”

Ariel took a couple of deep breaths attempting to gather her senses. It was all feeling so surreal.

Jess sat on the edge of Ariel’s bed. “I’m going to take the day off work so that I can be home to take care of you.”

Ariel propped herself up on her elbows. “You don’t have to do that Jess, I’m fine really.”

Jess pushed her back down. “No you are not fine I’m sorry to tell you. I’m staying home and I’m taking care of you. Your job today is to rest. Got it? Good!”

“Oh Jess,” Ariel protested, though she knew there was no hope for protest once Jess had made up her mind.

“Ok first thing we need to do is get you into the shower, you need one. Desperately!”

Jess looked up as Ariel walked into the small dining room of their appartment. “How was your shower? Are you feeling any better?”

Ariel took her seat at the table, acknowledging Jess. “Shower was great, you’re right I really needed one. And I am doing ok.”

Jess laid her hand on Ariel’s. “I am just feeling… a little worried about you. That must have been some dream, do you feel like talking about it?”

“I don’t know.” Ariel looked down. “I could use some coffee, just give me a little time, ok?”

“Yeah no worries Ariel, whenever you’re ready I’ll be here. Let me get you some coffee.” Jess stood up, but Ariel stopped her.

“I can get it myself you’ve already done a lot for me this morning.”

Ariel returned to the table with her coffee The two roommate sat silent for several minutes. Ariel stared down at the table only taking a couple of sips from her cup. Still looking down, she broke the silence. “About the dream…”

Jess interrupted. “Before you tell me about your dream please know that I love you and you are the most important person in the world for me.”

Tears began rolling from Ariel’s red eyes, her voice was choked as she started to speak. “I love you too Jess, Thank you for taking care of me. I don’t know if I can ever repay you.”

“Don’t worry about it, just you being you is payment enough.” Jess started shedding her own tears.

Ariel cleared her throat. “So about the dream. I told you before about the Queen and how I was tied to the chair. She was still in the dream. She gave me an injection, no idea what kind of drug but it was one that made me feel super good. She told me that drug was to cause me to become docile and take off my edge, whatever that means. Then I realized my arms and legs were no longer bound.”

“Your dream seems to be telling a story, do you think that’s odd?, I think it’s odd. Like maybe you are recovering some kind of lost memory. It’s also weird that you didn’t have a dream yesterday. Do you think that’s weird? It seems there is a pattern.” Jess’s voice was genuine concern for her friend.

Ariel collected her thoughts before speaking again. “The Queen took my hand and led me down this long corridor. She took me into a room off of the corridor. The room was filled with rows of tables. There were women sleeping on top of most of them. Two other women who looked like… Oh I… I mean they looked almost like robots, their bodies were covered in something like silver as if it was their clothing.” Ariel barely caught herself from revealing she had lied about not having a dream the night before.

“I can see the pain on your face Ariel, that’s enough for now.” Jess got up to take her cup to the sink.

“Wait,” Ariel held her palm up. “There is just one more thing. The two silver women helped me up onto an empty table. Attached something to my arm and put a blanket over me. I could feel something pinching my arm where the device was.. and… that’s when you woke me up.”

Beads of sweat were forming on Ariel’s body when she followed the Queen’s direction to look at the mirror. “Why is Jess crying?”

“You tell me… why is she crying. She’s your girl friend.” The Queen purred.

“She’s not my girlfriend she’s my roommate. She’s my…” Ariel choked up, Jess was more than her roommate more than just her friend too.

“I understand Jess is your connection, she’s your anchor. Someone who will always be there for you. Looks to me like she’s crying because she feels alone like someone has left her. Might that have been you who left? Your anchors are designed to pull something down. If the weight is becoming too much for you I am certain the collective can remedy the situation for you.” The Queen tapped her finger on Ariel’s forehead to drive home her point.

“Don’t you dare do anything to Jess. I… “ Ariel protested.

The Queen stepped closer. “Were you about to say you love her?”

Ariel remained silent with her jaw clinched.

“You know I think? It looks like the collective has gotten into your head. Your truths are being exposed and you are beginning to unravel. Aliens have invaded your mind and now you can’t say a word.” The Queen tormented Ariel.

Ariel only glared back.

Ariel came into Jess’s bedroom and found her folding some clothes. “There is something else I from my dream. That thing they put on my arm, it injected me with some kind of drug. Like they were trying to brainwash me. But I held on with more determination than I thought I ever could. Can you come over and sit next to me on the bed?”

“Sure” Jess replied looking into Ariel’s eyes as she sat on the bed.

“There is something I have wanted to do for more than a little while.” Ariel paused studying the look in Jess’s eyes. Her body leaned toward Jess and their lips met. Jess instinctively put her arms around her roommate’s body and pulled her tight.

When they broke their embrace Ariel looked down then gazed up into her, more than a roommate’s eyes. “I love you Jess, it took me a while to it that. I was just too scared to say what I was feeling in my heart.”

“Ariel, your words are the sweetest I have ever heard, well worth the weight. I love you too. This is my fairytale coming true. I’m so happy to be with you.”

The lovers hugged some more, Ariel said she had an idea. “How bout we watch that vampire flick you’ve been wanting to see. I’ll make you some popcorn.”

“I think there will be more than popcorn popping.” Jess winked.

Overnight Ariel had experienced her first ever true orgasm, not the kind she faked when she slept with men. With Jess as her mentor, she shared that fun with her too. They both came multiple times. When Ariel woke up the next morning she felt as if she had more, in the past few months, before the dreams started. Her bliss was broken when she realized she needed to be somewhere.

She couldn’t find her phone to check the time. It was just a few minutes after 8:00am just enough time to shower, get dressed and make it to her new job by 9:00.

Jess woke up when she heard her now official girlfriend scurrying around their apartment. She got up to see what Ariel was up too. She found her in the soon to be spare bedroom looking for her shoes.

“Sweetheart where are you going?”

“I start my new job this morning and I’m running late!” Ariel exclaimed in a panic.

Jess was confused. “New job? What new job? You’re on vacation. You already have your dream job writing for the journal. You never told me about getting a new job.”

“I did tell you about my new job, I told you all about my interview with Lisa, how strange it all was. She didn’t take any notes, you said she probably was recording the interview on a hidden camera. You !” Ariel felt her pulse bouncing off her skull.

“No I’m sorry sweetheart you didn’t tell me any of that.”

“I’ll prove it to you.” Ariel looked for the folder with all the documents Lisa had given her after she accepted Lisa’s offer. She always put important things in a specific place on top of the dresser in her room. The folder wasn’t there, it wasn’t anywhere in their apartment.

Jess tried to bring some sense to the situation. “Are you sure you didn’t dream of this last night and it just felt like the dream was real?”

Ariel shook her head. “No I didn’t have a dream last night and this time I’m not lying.”

“Wait!” Jess’s face turned to one of true concern. “You’ve been lying to me.?”

“No… well yes…. but it was just a small thing, I’ll explain it all to you later. Let me see if I have Lisa’s phone number on my phone.” She scrolled through her s, no Lisa listed. Nothing in her phone records either.

Ariel sat on the couch with her head in her hands. Jess sat down next to her and pulled Ariel into her arms. “It’s going to be ok Ariel. You went on vacation from all the stress you’ve been dealing with at work. I’d say you needed the break. I think you’re just going through all of this as your body is trying to purge all the stress you’ve been under.”

“Thank you love, you’re probably right. It’s all stress related. Bizarre dreams. Robot girls in silver suits that all sounds crazy.” Ariel paused to laugh. “You know I find myself in a real catch 22, the more I try to convince myself I’m not crazy, it’s the crazier I sound.”

Jess laughed too, they hugged. “We’re going to be ok Ariel, you’re not losing it, you’re never going to lose me. And we have each other. I love you!”

“I love you too Jess, and you’re right we have each other, we’re in all of this together.” She pulled Jess into a tight hug.

“It does appear you have a habit of holding things in. That suggests insecurities. Are you feeling vulnerable?” The Queen licked her lips. “Do you feel guilty for hiding your truth from Jess for so long. How long has it been since you realized you were in love with her? Three, five or has it been ten years? You are weak and the collective will exploit you. You will become its prize possession for all of 90 seconds, until the collective sends you back to the assembly line. Prove your worthiness. It’s a hopeless objective, resistance is futile and all of that is real against the collective. Take that to heart.
