Description:

Ariel wakes up bound to a chair in the presence of the Queen of the Collective. Is it all just a dream or something else?

* * *

“Ah! Where am I!? Why are my arms tied down!? Is somebody kidnapping me!?” Ariel screamed.

A woman’s calm sultry voice. “Nice, you are awake. You are where you want to be.”

“I don’t want to be here.” Ariel stated in a calmer tone, less sure of her words.

The woman stepped from the shadow and raised her eyebrow. “It’s what you asked for, and you always get what you ask for, you know that.” Her voice remained calm, confident, controlling.

“I don’t… I don’t asking for this.” Ariel’s voice was slower, soft almost drowsy. “Who are you? Why is your head bald?”

“I am the Queen.” The woman smiled. “I am the Queen of the collective.” The Queen slid her finger down Ariel’s upper arm causing her to shiver. “The collective has no need for hair. The collective only has everything the collective needs.”

Ariel’s eyes slowly blinked. “What is the collective?”

“The collective is me. The collective is all. The collective is.” The Queen stated.

Ariel’s lips moved softly. “I… I don’t understand.”

“Look at the mirror.” The Queen directed.

“What mirror?” Ariel said.

“The mirror right in front of you. You need to focus.” The Queen squeezed Ariel’s hand. “The mirror knows everything. It knows your past. It knows your future. It knows your now.”

“Why am I naked?”

* * *

“Eh…” Ariel took a sharp breath raising her head off her pillow. “Oh, I was dreaming.” She laid her head back down, sighed and closed her eyes.

“You ok in there?” Ariel’s roommate Jess knocked on her open door. “Sounded like you were talking to someone.”

“Oh, I think I was having a dream. I’m ok.” Ariel pulled back the covers and moved her body to sit up.

“Come on, I made some coffee, you have your interview this morning. Need to get going sleepy head.” Jess spoke in a caring voice.”

Ariel stretched and let out a yawn. “I’ll be right there.”

* * *

”So it was a strange dream.” Ariel paused to take a sip of her coffee. “I sure needed this. Thank you! Anyway, yeah it was a weird dream. I was somewhere strapped to a chair. I couldn’t move my arms nor my legs. And there was this woman there. Her head was shaved and her eyes were like seduction green. And her lips, looked so soft when she spoke. So sexy. I tell you if I looked in the mirror and saw that face looking back at me. I would be one happy girl.”

Jess shook her head. “Ok, hold on. You had this dream that sounds like you had been kidnapped. And now you are telling me about it as if you are aroused. Sounds creepy.”

Ariel took another sip of her coffee. “Well, yeah it was creepy and it felt like totally real. I guess maybe I am just a little too tactile. Or maybe my brain was just trying to figure the meaning of what the dream was. The woman told me I wanted this, I’m struggling to put some type of meaning to that.”

“Ok, well it’s good you’re ok. Hopefully you don’t have that dream again. You want some more coffee?” Jess got up to go refill her cup.

“No, I’m good.” Ariel replied. “I need to take a shower and start getting ready. And I really wouldn’t mind having that dream again. It’s made me curious to find out more, what this is all about.”

Jess sat down with a new cup of coffee. “Alright, well I’m working from home today so when you get back I want to hear all about how your interview went.”

“Sure, I really hope I get this job. My checking is feeling a little depressed and needs a pick me up.”

* * *

Ariel started. ”It was the strangest interview I have ever been involved with. So the woman I met with, her name was Lisa, walks me into her office. Very professional, she was wearing a light grey conservative business suit. Her office was gorgeous, a really nice leather couch and a couple of other padded leather chairs. Looked more like a lounge than an office as there was no desk. I would have called it a lounge however Lisa said it was her office.”

“Go on.” Jess moved to the edge of her seat.

“So she invites me to take a seat on the couch and she sits not all the way at the other end from me, just about a person space away from me. She doesn’t have any paperwork at all. She doesn’t even have anything to take notes. At this point I was finally starting to relax, I was pretty nervous while I was driving over.

She didn’t ask me anything at all about my job history or experience. No questions about what I felt I could bring to the organization. Not even the standard question about the one thing I’d like to change about myself.”

Jess tilted her head and raised an eyebrow. “That is weird.”

“She said just tell me about Ariel. So I started to tell her about my last job as a project manager and that I had earned my PMP and she stopped me. That’s all just job stuff. She actually said stuff which felt a little out of place in an interview like this. She said she wasn’t interested in hiring a job, she was interested in hiring me.” Ariel continued with a touch of disbelief on her face.

“Sounds like some kind of new wave interviewing approach. I wish I had made some popcorn, this is getting fun.” Jess let out a soft giggle.

“I told her about my painting and then started talking about my writing, but she stopped me, she wanted to know

more about my paintings. She asked me about subject matter, the style I like to paint in. One question she asked what my favorite color was to use in my paintings, I said purple. She raised an eyebrow so I said dioxazine purple. And she gave me an approving nod. I thought she must also be a painter, because who else would know about diox purple but a painter. She said she didn’t paint. And then she asked me a lot of questions about you.” Ariel paused nodding her head.

“Me? How did she even know about me?” Jess asked with concern in her voice.

“You got me on that one, though she didn’t mention you by name. She just asked me what it was like to have a woman as my roommate. As if that wasn’t a normal thing. I didn’t tell her anything personal, things you like to keep private. Just that you have been my best friend for the better part of my life. She asked me if I was in love with you. I told her that as my best friend, I do love you but not in a romantic sense.”

Jess nodded with a slight look of disappointment on her face. “You know what I think, she probably had a hidden camera recording the interview and that’s why she wasn’t taking any notes.”

“It’s entirely possible,” Ariel continued, “The whole interview went on this way for almost two hours. I wasn’t at all uncomfortable, it was just so unusual is all.”

“And?” Jess leaned in.

“And she made me an offer with a salary of more than I was asking for. And get this, with the job title of member. Isn’t that weird? Anyway I accepted, my training starts on Monday. Normally I would not go for anything like this, but I need the money. So I think I’ll work there long enough to get a couple of paychecks and then start looking for something else.” Ariel shrugged her shoulders.

“It’s bizarre alright. Well congratulations on the ‘New Job’ hope you can last for two paychecks. Hey you want to go see a movie tonight.” Jess asked while laying her hand on her friend’s shoulder.

“Nah, I’m a little tired after the interview.” Ariel laid back on the sofa. How about we stay home and watch something on Tubi?”

“That’s a great idea!” Jess replied with a bright smile. “How about we watch Vampire Lovers? Are you up for some sapphic blood sucking.” Jess asked with a pleading look on her face.

“Not so much, that’s more your style, not mine. What do you say we compromise and watch Mind Thief? and I’ll make the popcorn.” Ariel countered.

“Well I guess so.” Jess replied with a look of disappointment on her face. “But only if you use real butter on the popcorn.”

“Deal!” The roommates shook hands.

* * *

The Queen whispered into Ariel’s ear. “Are you starting to now?”

“All of that happened last week, it’s all still fresh in my memory.” Ariel responded with a voice of protest.

“Oh really?” The Queen purred. “I think you may have forgotten a few details. Such as telling Lisa that Jess is a lesbian and how much she enjoys doing your hair. Why do you think you forgot you said those things?”

“I didn’t say those things. I respect Jess’s privacy. She knows she can always trust me.” Ariel was feeling a bit agitated.

“Oh I see, respecting her privacy, is that like accidentally finding her private journal. And reading the parts where she confesses she’s been in love with you since high school. How she sneaks by your door, and watches you while you sleep, wishing she could crawl in the bed with you. And now with that information you use it to manipulate her, such as leaving your door open when you are sleeping, to tease her, all for getting her to do what you want her to do?” The Queen leaned in and gave Ariel a tender kiss on the lips. “Has Jess ever tried to kiss you like that? You know she wants too of course.”

“We’re best friends, We hug and kiss each other on the cheek all the time. She’s never tried to kiss me on the lips.” Ariel started pulling against the restraints holding down her arms.

“Well that is a pity, such a pity indeed. If you ever would take the chance to open up your body to her touch she would light up your world, to all manner of possibilities. Tell me something else I’m curious about. When you left your interview with Lisa, there was a spot of moisture underneath where you had been sitting. Was your bladder full, or was something else leaking?” The Queen continued to torment Ariel.

Ariel blushed. “I a… well I.”

“You don’t have to say anything, your hidden desires are perfectly clear and not so hidden any more. I will exploit your weakness just like you have been exploiting Jess. Tell you what, would you like to see a short preview of your future, a little teaser, you might like what you see, I actually think you will. Just nod, I know you are having some difficulties forming words right now.” The Queen paused waiting for a response from her captive. Ariel nodded and swallowed before taking a deep breath.

“Good, take a look at the mirror. Anyone there you recognize?” The Queen asked with a teasing smile.

Ariel looked at the image of the four women standing perfectly still. “Why are all those women dressed that way and what is it with the expression on Jess’s face?”

“Well I suppose the collective just happens to prefer silver, and doesn’t Jess look like she is so happy?”

“Happy? She looks completely blank, no emotions at all. Is this some sort of mind game you’re playing with me?” Ariel turned her head and closed her eyes.

“Mind game? Certainly possible, sometimes life is really just some big mind game. Your mind is clearly vulnerable for play. Jess is so happy, and you know why? You don’t need to ask, I’ll tell you. She is so happy because in her future she has received all she ever wanted. Just think about what that means, consider it closely, and maybe, very possibly you will be aroused because it’s what you want too.

And you know, something else to consider, this image could be from the past, this might actually be Jess right now, or who she has been. Kind of blows your mind to think about, doesn’t it?” The Queen allowed her words to linger in Ariel’s head for a few moments.

* * *

”So how’d you sleep last night?” Jess asked as she filled their cups of coffee.

Ariel stretched. “I slept pretty good.”

“Have any dreams last night?” She asked as she handed Ariel her cup.

“Thank you for making coffee again. No dreams, at least none that I .” Ariel lied.
