Your Proper Place

MC, FF, DS

Eighteen year old orphan Amelia Harmon earned one of three annual scholarships to St. Joella’s college provided by the very wealthy Von Reston family. Portia Von Reston, sole heiress to the Von Reston family fortune will also be attending St. Joella’s. Two very different women from two very different worlds brought together. Funny how life works, isn’t it?

Amelia “Ami” Harmon took a few minutes to simply savor the moment. To appreciate the reality of where she was actually standing on this cool and rainy Friday afternoon. She thought about everything it had taken just for her to be standing here now. All of the heartache, the struggle, and definitely the few truly kind people she had met and known who were genuinely concerned for her and had helped her SSOO much. None of them expecting her to show a little “gratitude” in return for their help. They were so unlike some of the staff at the orphanage and other people she’d known growing up. She thought about her life. Right or wrong, she had always questioned... WHY?! Why had her life always been so damn hard and unfair? She had grown up pretty much alone in the orphanage after her parents, her three year old sister AND her aunt had all been killed in that car crash when she was five. She didn’t know what to think when she was old enough to really understand it. Old enough to understand that she was living in an orphanage because she, apparently, had no other living family. After finding out that she literally had NO other living relatives: no uncle, no cousins, no grandparents, no... no one, she frequently questioned why, much more than how, had she survived the crash at all? Why hadn’t God simply taken her too? She had never been adopted. Never even come close. Only three... no, it was four interviews with three childless couples and one family of four. Well, five interviews actually, if you count the older, single man that tried to adopt her. One Mr. Michael Wells. Of course, the orphanage put a stop to that before it even had a chance. An older, unmarried man living alone wants to adopt a fifteen year old girl? Only one possible reason for that, right? They had only met twice, once at the orphanage for the “first introductions” and a second time for a day trip to the zoo (with an escort, no less!) Granted, they had only been face to face for a total of about ten hours over two days, but right from the start she felt totally comfortable around him. She never felt uncomfortable around him or got the impression that he was just trying to score himself a “piece of that” to have at home. She certainly wasn’t worried about being turned into any kind of sex slave. She laughed out loud as she considered the irony of the whole situation. Considering that two of the three people that raised such a fuss and stopped Michael from adopting her had, themselves, been trying to put her on her knees and on her back for the last few years.

Standing in front of a leaner mirror in the corner of her new apartment, she looked at herself. She was pretty enough, she thought. An attractive young woman, Ami stands five feet, seven inches tall. She has long, straight black hair that currently ran to her waist. She has bright, blue eyes and a good tan. The only part of her body that she wishes she could change are her breasts. Having 34E breasts ALWAYS gets you noticed! She had tried everything she could think of to hide or divert attention away from her chest. She dressed in baggy, loose clothes and wore sports bras instead of regular ones, grew her hair out, wore bright, flashy earrings and didn’t wear a lot of make-up in her attempts to get people to stop staring at her after she had developed. Of course, none of it had worked. Having no choice, she just made up her mind to not let it bother her when she had an entire conversation with someone who couldn’t close their eyes and tell her what color her hair was! Maybe it was her quiet personality? She was naturally shy, quiet and much preferred to keep to herself. She didn’t consider herself overly submissive by any means. She simply didn’t like confrontations. Unless it was really important to her, she usually just let the other person “win.” She didn’t care much for sports or being “out in the world” either. She much preferred to read a good book, do jigsaw puzzles, word searches or just listen to music. The MP3 player she got for her birthday two years ago was still her single, favorite worldly possession. She has managed to build up a pretty good collection of music since she got it. She enjoys almost every type of music, everything from Mozart and Berlioz, Zac Hemsey and Hans Zimmer to Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson and Eminem. She could go from 80’s rock and roll giants like Yes, Peter Gabriel and U2 to Imagine Dragons and Goo Goo Dolls. She also enjoyed several movie soundtracks. Hell, she was even a big Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra fan. She loved to just lay down, hit play, close her eyes and let the music take her wherever it did. To simply relax and let her thoughts be guided by the music. She had happily spent countless hours that way.

So, having finally turned eighteen and graduated high school, she, found out that she would be one of three girls accepted for the three “Full Ride” scholarships to Saint Joella’s College this year. Saint Joella’s is a small, private women’s college that has been in existence since 1855. It is a very well known, proven and highly regarded college. The scholarships have been provided by the Von Reston family since 1892. They are one of America’s oldest and wealthiest families, she had learned much that reading about them after applying for the scholarship with two other girls from the orphanage and over five hundred other girls across the nation in total. When the head of the orphanage, Mrs. Meredith Lazlo, told her that she had been accepted, she was so thrilled. And scared, too. She had basically grown up alone in the orphanage. Obviously, there were a lot of other kids there, but what was the point of getting to know someone if they just got adopted and left? She had gotten close to the staff and people that worked there over the years. But having to move across the country to start all over for her freshman year of college meant that she would be completely alone. Again.

So, here she was, standing in the living room of the third floor, two bedroom, corner apartment she would share with another girl, (one of the cooler surprises she discovered were part and parcel of the scholarship) that was only three blocks from the campus. She laughed to herself as she looked at the three bags sitting just inside the front door that held ALL of her worldly possessions, along with her purse and laptop bag. Her job as a desk clerk and room service attendant at the high-end hotel downtown after school and weekends had paid surprisingly well, but she was hardly ready to shop for her first year of college! She was beyond grateful to Mrs. Lazlo when she insisted on taking Ami shopping and making sure that she was “battle ready” when she got to Saint Joella’s. Ami smiled a warm smile as she thought back to the conversation they had during lunch at the mall the Saturday they spent shopping a couple of weeks prior to her leaving.

“But, Mrs. Lazlo, please. I can’t let you do this. I do have some money and I can...”

“Nonsense, Ami. I won’t take no for an answer. I will not send you off to college without the proper “battle armor” and equipment understand? You’re not going anywhere until I am confident that you are absolutely ready for total academic warfare. Now eat up, we still have a lot of shopping to do.”

As the older woman that had become more of a mother to her than the mother she had lost and was still the best friend Ami had ever known, wrapped her up in one of her famous bearhugs. Ami almost wished she could just stay at the orphanage and work for Mrs. Lazlo. She knew she would miss her more than anything or anyone else she had ever known.

“Yes, ma’am. Thank you, Mrs. Lazlo. I owe you SO much. I promise I will pay you back for everything you’ve done for me.”

“You just go get that college degree, Ami. You study hard, get a great job and build yourself a wonderful life. That’s all the payback I want.”

“Yes, ma’am. I will. Thank you again.”

When she unlocked the door, went in and looked around she had been pleasantly surprised. While not a large apartment, it was more than big enough for her. The living room was small but cozy, the furniture was basic but looked new. She liked that the couch was in front of the long wall in the living room. She could already see the bookshelf she would put in the right hand corner later. She was really looking forward to trying out the fireplace that sat in the left hand corner. She also liked the small patio which had a pretty good view of the park behind the apartment complex. And the full kitchen would be more than enough for her. The bedroom close to the front door was bigger and the attached bathroom was nice as well. Being the first one there, she naturally claimed it for herself. She just hoped that when her roommate arrived, there wouldn’t be a big fight over it. She didn’t want to start the year off by arguing with a stranger over a bedroom. And considering how she had grown up, sharing space with only ONE other person and having her own bedroom for literally the first time in her life felt like a gift from above. She took a deep breath, grabbed her bags and headed for her bedroom to unpack and start getting organized. After all, classes started Monday!

* * *

Portia Lucinda Von Reston stared out of the long limo’s tinted windows, not listening to her mother, Marion, at all. She’s heard “the speech” as she refers to it so many times that she can ignore her mother for several minutes at a time and pick right back up again from where she had tuned her out as soon as she hears any given “key’ word. Which is what explained the smile on her face. The fake smile on her face, of course.

The deeply tanned, five foot, three inch tall blonde with seductive, bright green eyes, was, in fact, thinking about other things at the moment. The fact that Portia was about to start classes for her master’s degree in Finance at St. Joella’s was, at best a secondary thought. She had more important and far more... fun things on her mind. In fact, she was currently thinking almost exclusively about the seriously beautiful, mouth-wateringly delicious and very well-trained sex slave she was being forced to leave behind. Portia had put a very telling effort into finding and crafting the perfect lie to bring Annie with her without her parents or Annie’s family getting suspicious. Unfortunately, there simply weren’t any real reasons for Annie to be there.

Antonia “Annie” Magee is the twenty five year old daughter of Kevin and Lois Magee. Kevin is the family’s driver, mechanic and had spent years as Portia’s unofficial bodyguard. Lois is the family’s household manager. At fourteen, Annie had started out as her mom’s unofficial assistant and at eighteen became one of the family’s maids. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America at twenty, she became the family chef. A position she has held since. The Magees have worked for Portia’s family since before Annie or Portia were even born.

The subtle smile on Portia’s lips hid her formidable intellect, extreme focus and unstoppable personal drive that her bright blue eyes only hinted at. The single thought occupying her very active mind at the moment was the fact that she would... mercifully and very soon be free of her dear mother’s... attempts at active parental guidance. That thought alone making this trip to the airport and the family jet more bearable than at any time in her memory. Fortunately, her father had been far more adept at teaching her everything she needed to know about life and business. And more specifically, finance. He had made certain that she knew and understood the difference between ing, economics, finance and investing. And yes, there ARE very specific and substantial difference between counting money, understanding money, managing money, and making money! And as a very skilled private investor, Portia’s father knows how to make money. And he has. A LOT of it, in fact! And having literally grown up sitting on his lap and in his home office with him as he conducted his business and investment affairs with his team over the years, Portia learned it all. One Friday afternoon after escorting his tax attorney out to his car, the fourteen year old Portia walked back into her father’s office, leaned over his desk, looked right into his eyes and smiled as she told him she could and would double any amount of money he gave her. And she would do it in one year! An amused smile on his face, he minimized his computer screens, sat up straight as he laced his fingers together on his desk, looked up at his only child and took a deep breath. He responded calmly.

“And if you... don’t? What then?“

“What do you mean “what then,” dad? I don’t understand?“

His smile only grows wider. He has wanted to teach her this very important lesson for some time. He’s been waiting for her to step up and make this very challenge for a few years now. And if she can accept, understand and, more importantly, learn from it now he knows that she will be far ahead of the pack.

“I mean that you are standing there asking for money to start making your own investments. You are practically daring me, my dear daughter. I know you can do the work, you’ve proven that already, but what I want to know is..., what are you willing... to risk? How badly do you want it, Portia? What will failure cost you?”

Portia smiled. There it was. She knew that her father had given her a Masterclass on business, finance and investing over the years. She knew exactly what he was wanting. He had “hammered” it into her from day one. He had told her every day that every decision you make has only two possible outcomes, success or failure. For every great opportunity there was a very real cost. THAT was what he was wanting. Right here and right now, he wanted her to tell him what it would cost her when and if she failed. She knew exactly what he was waiting for. She stood up straight, crossed her arms over her small chest and smiled at him.

“IF.. I fail? Simple. Cancel my inheritance.”

“All of it, Portia? No inheritance at all? Is that your offer? I assume you understand exactly how much you’re risking? You understand that I can and will actually do it, don’t you? Don’t think for a moment that I won’t! You need to be very clear on this and understand that if you fail, you lose. Everything! You will not inherit so much as one bright penny when your mother and I die? Understand?”

“Yes.”

“In that case, you have a deal. Now, how much do you want?”

“One hundred thousand dollars.”

He locks eyes with his loving daughter and they both smile as she stares right back at him. Twelve months and one day later, the one hundred thousand dollar he opened, authorized and agreed to backstop for her use was worth over one half million dollars! Her has more than doubled again in the four years since. She was now a legal and legitimate millionaire in her own right.

“... share an apartment near campus. And before you start Portia, yes, I know you’re not happy about it and no, you cannot get your own place. Your great, great grandmother’s mother was the first to do this and it has become a “right of age” of sorts for the women in our family and we continue to honor it. I did it and now it’s your turn.”

Pulled out of her very satisfying thoughts of a collared, nude and kneeling Annie eating her out, Portia faced her mother. They have already gone “round and round” on this several times and, rather surprisingly, she isn’t winning this one.

“It makes no sense, mom, I’m twenty years old, a legal adult and a millionaire in my own right. And I already have my bachelor’s degree. I can’t believe you actually think I’m going to spend two years living in some cramped, little... apartment, while I pursue my master’s degree, much less share it with someone else. You CAN’T be serious?!“

“Indeed I am, young lady. Your father and I agreed to let you attend Carnegie Mellon university for your bachelor’s degree because it is both your father’s alma mater and a top school for finance, but now you WILL attend St. Joella’s for your master’s degree and you WILL live in that apartment WITH a roommate. And you will do so until you graduate, Is that understood?”

“No! Mom, I am not going to...”

“Enough! This is not a debate, young lady. You may be a legal adult and a self-made millionaire, but if you expect to inherit the ENTIRE family fortune, you will live in that “cramped, little apartment” and you will do so with a roommate. End of discussion!“

Even Portia knew it was useless to argue. Her mother may not be the greatest example of parenting success, but her ability to talk and argue would draw the envy of every U.S. senator that ever stood up and started a filibuster. Resigned to her apparent fate, at least for the moment, Portia took a deep breath as her intelligent mind changed course and began searching for options. She smiled as she quickly realized at least one obvious pro to her current predicament.

‘A private, if cramped, apartment off campus and with a rommate? Well, let’s hope she’s at least a pretty one. And perhaps after a few... conversations, she might make for a useful, if not, satisfying slave.’

An impish smile on her face as she considered the fun she would have with Annie’s possible replacement, Portia met her mother’s gaze and tried to at least sound nonchalant, if not innocent.

“Fine. Do you at least know who my roommate is? Do you know anything about her?”

A conqueror’s smile on her own face, Marion Von Reston handed her daughter a manila folder as she continued.

“Of course I do, Portia. Her name is... Amelia Harmon.”
