The Time I Died

Chapter Four

“How do you feel, Kate? Any better?”

The room around her spun in ways that made Kate think of a broken rocket tumbling towards Earth, with her sealed inside. Her stomach clenched and heaved; there was nothing left to expel.

“I feel wonderful, Master,” she said through cracked lips. Her chin was speckled with the remnants of a vomiting session she no longer ed. “Thank you so much for always thinking of me! I love you so much.”

“The drugs will wear off soon, I promise. If you feel like throwing up again, let Megan know.”

A young woman stepped forward, perched confidently on a pair of very tall heels. She held an orange bucket in her delicate, manicured hands. “Hello,” she said, complete with curtsy. The bucket banged against her knees. “I’m Megan. I’m so glad you’re with us now, Kate. We’re going to have so much fun together!” She sat on the polished wood floor, one arm around the bucket.

Do I know a Megan? Do I know this Megan? Kate’s stomach resumed its Olympic somersaults. She kept her focus on the bucket. “Do… do I know you? Did we meet somewhere?” Oh God, I’m such an idiot. I’m sick and this girl is trying to help me! “I’m sorry, I’m Kate. I’m so sorry I threw up. I can… I can help clean it up, if you need help.”

“Kate.” Master stood over the two women, as was his right. As was his purpose. His voice—firm, commanding, confident—drew her full attention.

“You will and obey,” he said. “Do it now.”

Megan is your best friend, Kate. We are all your best friends. That is also The Truth. Being friends allows us to work together to give Master everything he desires.

Kate’s eyes widened. For the first time, she saw the girl sitting cross-legged across from her for who she really was. Another wonderful slavegirl, just as obedient and worshipful to Master as Kate. Another one of the lucky few who had witnessed The Truth. Master didn’t share The Truth with just anyone, so if Megan had seen it for herself, she had to be someone very special.

Master, after all, was never wrong.

“Oh, Megan! I’m really sorry. I think I might be sick?” She was babbling now. “Thank you for the bucket. You’re so sweet!”

“Kate?”

Master wonderful Master ohmygod he’s talking to me, ME! “Yes, Master? How may I be of service to you?” She batted her eyes, which wasn’t the best idea ever, as it made her queasy stomach churn even more rapidly.

“I’m very proud of you,” he said, nodding for emphasis.

ohmygodohmygodohmygod i did it, i did it, he’s PROUD of me! Oh my God I could die right now if it didn’t mean leaving him, I could never-

“But,” he continued, “you look a little pale. You should rest. Lie down and rest for me, Kate.”

Kate very much wanted to rest with her Master, on the floor or in his bed or anywhere else he cared to take her, but her eyes chose that moment to tug themselves shut, and she couldn’t convince them to reopen. Her legs gave out at the same time, snaking out from under her until she was no longer kneeling. The back of her head pressed against wood, surprisingly warm to the touch. “Must rest,” she mumbled. “Obey. Always… obey.”

“You will sleep until I awaken you. Now, rest.”

“Yessss…” She felt like an empty rowboat being shoved away from the dock, left to drift aimlessly in the middle of the lake. Drifting over the deep, dark, silent waters, drifting so deep, so deep, always so deep…

In a few minutes she was dreaming of Master, and their wonderful future together.

“Kate, I’ve read the FBI report on Golden Dawn. They said that the drugs and the brainwashing techniques that Michael utilized were some of the most sophisticated and effective that they’d ever seen. There wasn’t a single documented case of anyone fighting it off. It wasn’t your fault that you eventually gave in. Anyone would have. I know I would have.”

“Yeah, but I fell for it, though. Hook, line, sinker, fish, fisherman, all of it. The things he had Nikki say to me were the things I wanted to hear more than anything in the world. I wanted so badly to believe them that I turned my own brain off. Here, take my brain, I think it’s broken, please rebuild it for me. I don’t care how it turns out. Just that it’s a different brain. One that works. And… and he did. That’s what he did.

That’s exactly what he did.”

“After that, I was a new person. Old Kate skipped class. New Kate showed up early and sat right up front. I did all of the extra credit assignments, I raised my hand in class. I was Model Student Kate. And I made sure that everyone saw me as Model Student Kate.”

“Because you wanted to show them how great Golden Dawn was? What it could do?”

“You know, if Michael had thought the way you do, he could have been a billionaire. He could have had us girls out shilling some bullshit self-help classes at a thousand bucks a pop. But noooooo… Michael was thinking solely with his dick. I was Model Student Kate so that girls, pretty girls, would come up to me after class and ask me to help them study. Or I’d take the initiative, hit them up, make the offer myself. Whenever they agreed, and we met up, I’d tell them all about this neat trick I learned that really helped me to concentrate and do better in class.”

“Hypnosis, I’m guessing?”

“Bingo. And who’s going to be afraid of the cute redhead with the perfect GPA? She just wants to help, you know? It worked out perfectly. Once he had me, Michael didn’t need to host free keggers or grab girls off the street. I was sending them right to his front door. They’d have this sudden compelling urge to ‘just stop by’ the compound and he’d greet them and say ‘it’s a golden August sunrise’— that was the trigger phrase he had me implant in them, always that line—and they’d drop back down into trance and sleepwalk to the basement to be programmed.”

“Do you like her, Master?”

Kate took her usual place at Master’s feet. He was wearing purple slippers today. They looked and smelled new, and their novelty briefly captured Kate’s attention. She wondered if one of the other slaves had bought them as a gift. She wondered what she could get Master that would be equally useful. A second pair of slippers? A new silk robe?

That was it. A new silk robe. Master liked his robes. She would get him one that was especially silky, if there was such a thing, if they graded silkiness on a scale of some sort. A perfect ten on that scale. Kate didn’t have any money. Didn’t need any, thanks to Master and his amazing generosity, but a pretty girl didn’t have to get too creative in order to pull in some serious cash. She resolved to hit the internet that afternoon to browse a few catalogues and post a few personals.

“She’s perfect, Kate,” said Master. His voice washed away all of Kate’s thoughts like springtime rain. Soft, gentle, constant. “I’m always impressed at how deep you can take them. I’m glad I found you before you found me!”

He laughed at his own joke. Kate instinctively laughed with him, being careful to never be louder. She didn’t understand the joke, but then again, she rarely did. That wasn’t the important thing. The important thing was that Master was happy. As a bonus, he was also happy with her.

That thought raced along her nude body until it settled between her legs, and she pursed her lips. If Master was pleased with her, perhaps…

“W-would you like a blowjob, Master?” She waited patiently for his response. An eternity ed. Then another.

He looked down at her, eyes soft and filled with understanding. Master loved his slaves. “Not every mind controller is like me,” he’d said to Kate on more than one occasion, but she never really understood that, either. If you loved someone enough to show them The Truth… of course you loved them utterly. Completely. Loved them as much as Kate loved Master, as much as all the girls did. That was as plain as day. Love for love, life for life, slave for Master, Master for slave.

That thought ed the previous one, and she had to bite her lower lip to keep herself from coming right there and then. Master wouldn’t like it if she jilled herself into orgasm without him… how selfish would that be? No, it was a slavegirl’s job to sacrifice her needs and desires until Master could fulfill them. That was part of The Truth. Only Master could truly make Kate happy, and only Master could give her the stunning orgasms she needed.

Craved.

“Mmmm. I’m so… Master, I’m so wet for you right now.” It was true. She dropped forward to hands and knees, the slickness between her legs spreading to her thighs, leaving little drops on the wood floor beneath her. She crawled forward until head was level with Master’s lap. “I am always hot and wet and ready for you, Master. Please use me however you wish.”

She was dimly aware that she was whimpering, something Master disliked, but in the heat of the moment she found that she didn’t care. She needed him. Now. It was worth a scolding later.

But Master didn’t discipline her, or scold her, or even acknowledge the beautiful redhead inches away from giving him a blowjob most men would never experience in their entire lives. His attention was instead focused on something above and behind her.

“I… I should probably look in on Stephanie’s progress,” he mused.

Master had a beard when he’d first shown The Truth to Kate. At some point he had chosen to quiz the girls about whether he looked better with one or without one. It took multiple attempts to get any of them to respond with anything beyond “whichever you wish, Master,” but in the end the beard came off in a 7-5 vote. Kate couldn’t which way she’d voted, only that she’d been allowed to vote… to vote! To choose! More proof that Master was the best of all possible Masters, just like The Truth had said he was!

His hand went to where the beard had been, stroking his bare chin as he continued to ponder things. “I’m wondering… Kate, I think you’re ready to myself and Nikki in the Room. You’ll be helping us to show Stephanie The Truth today. You’d like that, wouldn’t you? It’s something you have always wanted and desired.”

Wow. Wowowowowowowow... “Master, I… oh my God, it’s something I’ve always wanted and desired! I promise I will do whatever I can to help!”

“It’s not as easy as it might look,” he said. “Some of the girls are… let’s just say that they can get confused when they’re in the Room. They want to help the woman in the chair so much that they start listening to her, and before you know it they’re trying to get her out of the chair instead of helping her to see The Truth.”

“That’s ridiculous, Master! That they would do that, I mean. Why? That makes no sense!”

“Something about how the process works, Kate. I’ve never understood it myself. But it happened with Nikki. It happened with Carla. She actually had Hailey… do you Hailey, Kate?”

She shook her pretty head. “No, Master.”

“Water under the bridge. Long story short, Carla actually had Hailey out of the chair and halfway out the door before I caught them. It wasn’t pleasant. And you know how Carla is. Just as loyal and devoted and kind as any of you. But in that moment…”

“Oh my God, I wouldn’t ever do that, Master!” She closed her eyes and tried to imagine it. She couldn’t, not even after scrunching her face and gritting her teeth. “No, not ever! I love you so much, I promise that in a million years I wouldn’t even think of doing that!”

“It’s okay, Kate. I trust you. Also, you will forget Hailey’s name, and that she ever existed. Understood?”

“Yes, Master.”

“Good. It’s best that you never knew her. I don’t want to confuse you.”

Her smile widened. “Thank you for looking out for me, Master.”

“I was just thinking to myself… there’s something special about you. How you carry yourself. How eager you are to find all of these poor, lost girls and bring them to me.”

She was lost in his beautiful eyes again. The shock of Carla’s betrayal was already fading away, ready to who? Never mind, forget her in the basement of her brain. God, she loved Master so fucking much!

An idea occurred to her, and although she didn’t enjoy speaking out of turn, this was important. Master needed to know.

“I’ll prove it to you, Master. Please give me a chance. I’ll prove that I can help you.”

He nodded, and her heart exploded right there and then.

“But first… I see that look in your eyes, Kate. I think you’ve earned what you’re looking for today.”

He rose from his chair, waiting patiently for Kate to scuttle backwards before reaching for his belt. In moments, his pants were pooled around his ankles, and Kate’s reward dangled temptingly. She prepared herself to wait, like an eager dog. He would let her know when it was time to receive her treat.

“Now, Kate,” he said, and she pounced.

* * *

“How many women did you hypnotize that way?”

“I wish I could say just one or two, but it was a lot. I don’t know the exact number. It’s funny, because with some of them I can still their names, and what they look like, and what they majored in, almost like we were best friends. I guess, in a way, we were best friends. Sisters! Girl power! But then there’s others that I barely . I don’t know if that’s because I didn’t do anything with them, or if Michael erased my memories, or if they’re just lost in the Swiss cheese inside my brain.

I do that it lasted beyond college. After I graduated that first summer, Michael had me get a job as a tutor, so I could keep rounding them up.”

“Was it really that many? When the authorities raided Golden Dawn, there were only eight of you living with him.”

“Yep. But Michael wasn’t an idiot. Not completely, anyway.”

* * *

“Hey, Britt! Fancy seeing you here!”

The blonde drew in a breath, mentally preparing herself to fend off yet another girl—or guy—trying to chat her up. Their conversations always started off this way, something simple like Hey, how’s it going? or Aren’t we in the same ing class?.

“Britt?”

Britt reluctantly pivoted on her stool, the better to face her would-be suitor. Inwardly, she fumed. Didn’t they know this was her ‘alone time’? As in, ‘I am alone and want to be alone’? As in ‘alone means you don’t approach me and say “fancy seeing you here?”’

Alone time is very, very important to me. I must never skip my alone time, no matter what.

Outwardly, she made what was by now a well-practiced ‘neutral face,’ one that was neither too bitchy nor too accommodating. “Hi, um, I’m really sorry, but I’m kind of too busy to chat with… oh, hey!”

The interrupter was none other than Kate Thomas, the friendly grad girl who tutored. Or who was considering grad school while she raised money by tutoring. Britt could never the exact details, only that the details didn’t matter, and that Kate was her friend. Finally, someone in this coffee shop she could trust. Her neutral expression gave way to one far more personable and friendly.

“Hi, Britt!” Kate was sunny, as always. Where she got the boundless energy and enthusiasm was anyone’s guess, but if pressed, Britt would have assumed that graduation had taken quite a load off of the cute redhead’s shoulders.

“Kate! How are you? Still tutoring?”

“I am! And thanks so much for setting me up with Michelle. This school is fucking killing me. They just raised the grad fees by almost two hundred bucks!”

So… she is a grad student, I guess? “That sucks! Fucking state schools, right? They tell you it’s so cheap and then they fuck you over with all of these extra fees. Fact, if you know anyone who has an apartment for rent, Chelsea and I are looking to bail out of our lease at Pacific Hall so we can grab an apartment in town.”

“I think I know the perfect person!” Kate pulled the stool opposite Britt away from the table and took her place on it, a slight breach of etiquette that the blonde would have never tolerated from anyone else. She could trust Kate, thankfully, so she let it slide.

“Oh, cool! Do you have their number? On-campus rent next semester is going to be so bad, and I just can’t keep asking my parents for money.”

“Sure. I know it by heart.”

Kate leaned across the table, another breach of etiquette and personal space that briefly startled Britt, until she ed that she could trust Kate completely and without question, which was comforting to say the least. You couldn’t trust many people in this world.

“Nice! Let me get out my phone and—”

“Her name is harmonious parsnip.”

“I’ll… um… I’ll… what did you?”

Harmonious parsnip.

Everything whooshed out of Britt’s brain like someone had just yanked loose the plug at the bottom of a bathtub. Her eyes rolled into her head as it sagged to her chest. “Uhnnnn,” she slurred, before forgetting that she was slurring, or slumping, or existing.

Kate continued to smile.

* * *

“None of them knew the truth. And since they weren’t living at the mansion when the FBI arrived, they never had a chance to find out. The hypnotic calls just stopped coming, and their ‘me time’ finally started to actually be that. Then… I guess they graduated, got jobs, moved on with their lives?”

“Do you think they know by now? The FBI report doesn’t mention deprogramming, but it was released only a few months after Michael was arrested.”

“As far as I know, they never did. And I’ll be honest, it kinda bugs the shit out of me.”

“Are you afraid for their safety? If it helps, Kate, things like post-hypnotic suggestions fade over time. Eventually they stop working altogether. By the time Michael Oliver gets out of prison it’ll have been decades since he programmed them to respond to triggers like the ones you’ve described.”

“That’s comforting to know! But at the same time…”

“Yes?”

“Like you said, this wasn’t your ordinary cult brainwashing. This wasn’t your usual hypnosis. The words and ideas he put into our heads… it’s like he welded them in place. And they’re still there. Decker burned them out of me, out of Nikki too, but the others? It’s like the little secret flaw that literally anyone could take advantage of. And that scares me. I’m glad we’re talking about it today, because it’s been coming up on repeat in my head for the last few days.”

“We can certainly talk about that in more detail. What scares you about it, do you think? After all, Michael’s in prison.”

“What if he has a friend, though? Or a prison buddy who got paroled already? What about some million to one chance that someone blurts out the exact wrong words at the exact wrong woman? How much… I’m sorry, I’m crazy-ranting, I know.”

“We’ve talked about catastrophic thinking. We all do it. The important thing is to recognize when we’re in the middle of doing it, and you just did that. That’s a big step! And you are exactly correct, the odds of anything happening are a million to one. A billion to one.”

Catcher in the Rye. Did you read that book?”

“I think we all had to read that book at some point in school.”

“Ha, true! I haven’t thought about it in years, probably since ninth grade. But this week… the whole thing about the guy keeping the kids from falling off the cliff, I feel like maybe that’s me. Like that should be my job.

I’m the one who did this to them. I’m the one that took advantage of their trust, the one who stole their minds, the one who handed them over to that bastard. Yeah, I know! I know what you’re going to say, but still, right? I’m the one who hypnotized them. I’m the reason they’re in danger now, and maybe forever.”

“Are you thinking about tracking them down yourself?”

* * *

“What brings you to Freeport, then? Conference? Family?”

“Oh! It’s the annual Commodore Tax Credit Financing workshop!” Michelle raised her badge, orange and yellow, bold print on the front that was waving too much for Kate to make out. “Two full days at the Freeport Hyatt. I drove in from Philly. Tom usually comes with me, but this week he’s in Chicago. So I just… um, so hey, if you’re not doing anything tonight, do you want to go to dinner? It’ll be fun to catch up!”

Michelle smiled. It was a pretty smile, eyes glowing, lips slightly parted, just enough to show the well-minded teeth behind them. She had soft skin and heavy breasts and she moaned in the cutest way whenever Michael fucked her.

I like hypnotizing pretty girls. I’m very good at it.

Shut up.

But she didn’t even have to hypnotize Michelle. Michelle was already a brainwashed slavegirl, even if she didn’t it, even if those years were long past them both.

All she needed was the trigger phrase.

* * *

“I want to, and I also don’t.”

“Hmm. In what ways?”

“Oh, Claire would kill me if she heard me talking about this. She’s all about moving on. ‘You just have to let the past be the past, Kate! Stop thinking about it so much! Don’t make me give you amnesia again!’”

“She has a good point. It’s often a healthy way to look at things.”

“Yeah, I know. And I know that you know that, and she knows that, but I also know what I actually did to her, and she doesn’t. She just thinks that she was fed some trippy drugs, not that she was about to become my replacement as my husband’s fuck-bunny. Not that I’m… I mean, I was a fuck-bunny, kind of, but also… what the heck was I talking about?”

“What your thoughts are, when you think about the women that you hypnotized when you were part of Golden Dawn, and whether you should try to confront them about it.”

“Right. Sorry. Swiss cheese brain! Now with 50% fewer holes!”

“It’s fine, Kate.”

“I do want to get back to Claire’s thing after this, though. Or maybe next session.”

“That’s fine as well.”

“So… the rescuing. The return of secret agent Kate. I start to daydream about it, and then it turns into a… I guess, a day nightmare?

I’m positive I can look up the names I . Maybe find a profile online, get a sense of where they live, how far they are from here. Maybe I’d drive over, or fly out, a short three-day weekend. Sure, I can’t most of their individual post-hypnotic triggers, but there’s the August sunrise one, and I that. Heck, I could even… I’m this formerly-brainwashed master hypnotist, right? If the trigger didn’t work, I could just hypnotize them right on the spot!

But the thing I can’t decide, and the thing that scares me about it, is that I don’t know how much of that daydream is about what I want to do, and how much of it is about what I’ve been brainwashed to do. That’s when the nightmare starts.”

“The mantra that you like hypnotizing women.”

“I like hypnotizing pretty girls! I’m very good at it! God, I’m going to carve that on my tombstone. ‘Here lies Kate Pendleton. She liked hypnotizing pretty girls.’ It’s part of me, Doctor. It’ll never not be part of me.

James and I have fun with it. We hypnotize each other sometimes. It’s fun, it’s kinky, we both get a laugh out of it. We both get other things out of it. But he’s my husband. He’s also a guy, not a pretty girl. There’s no little voice insisting that I have to hypnotize him and turn him into a mindless bikini cult girl. With anyone else… I worry that I’d let all of that darkness back in. All of that fear, all of that anger. That need to dominate, and be dominated. It’s like a drug… it’s… it’s like if you quit drinking, you can’t ever ‘just have one,’ and you know it, so you don’t drink at all.

So, I don’t track them down. And then I feel guilty because I’m not.”

“Kate, I know this sounds like something a therapist is required to say, but I honestly believe that you would do the right thing. You had both Claire and Jane completely under your control, and you deprogrammed both of them. Right away.”

“I wanted to prove Decker wrong, after what he said to me.”

“You wanted to do the right thing. Which is something that Decker never did.”

“I’m not exactly the poster girl for doing the right things.”

“Sometimes you just have to let the past be the past, Kate.”

“Touché.”

“Say you did run into one of those women today, Kate. You make small talk and exchange pleasantries. You both realize that you attended the same university and then it hits you, she’s one of the brainwashed Golden Dawn girls. Knowing who you are today, knowing what you’ve been through, do you really think that your first inclination would be to hypnotize her and strip away her free will? Make her your slave in the same way that Decker and Michael did to you?”

“No, I wouldn’t.”

“I can see you trying out her post-hypnotic trigger, to see if it worked. But even that would be for her benefit, not yours. You’d be testing it to see if she was safe from Michael.”

“Okay, true. But what if it did work? What if I met a woman who used to be part of Golden Dawn? What if I said those magic words, and her eyes rolled up into her head as she made that sexy little sigh that girls like her make when you pull the mental rug out from under them?”

* * *

“Are you staying at the Hyatt?” Kate pointed in the general direction of the hotel.

“I am! They were going to put us in a hotel by the airport, but I found a great deal online that let me use my points. Fifty dollars a night with a upgrade! I’m really glad I did it. You should see the room they gave me! It’s huge! And this town… oh my goodness, you live in such a cute city! I’ve been walking around all afternoon, just checking out the little shops and the park! You’re so lucky to live here!”

Maybe it won’t work.

But what if it does?

Michelle had her phone out and was tapping away at it.

There was still time to walk away, but it would mean abruptly turning and leaving, Michelle calling after her or even running to catch up while Kate made her getaway. She would never understand, and Kate would never be able to explain it to her.

“Here, let me give you my number, and if you want…”

“Michelle DiMera.” The words bolted from her mouth. “It’s a golden August sunrise.”

To be continued
