The Ripple Effect
Chapter 5: 8 O’Clock
Declan looked around the dorm room he shared with Skye, trying to see it the way Sarah would. On freshman move-in day, he ed how Skye had dropped his duffel on the bare mattress, proclaiming, “This place is going to be a chick magnet. Grand Central Babe Station.” Declan’s gaze drifted over the room as it was now. Skye’s side was cluttered with computer parts and energy drink cans, a poster for some anime Declan didn’t recognize, taped crookedly above Skye’s bed. His own side was neater with textbooks stacked on his desk, his laptop closed, and the sheets on his bed actually made for once. So far, it wasn’t exactly matching Skye’s earlier vision.
He wondered if there was anything he could do to improve it. The thought lingered as he scanned the space again, eyes narrowing slightly at the faint layer of dust on the windowsill and the single rogue sock peeking out from under Skye’s chair.
She’s changed because of the ripples, he thought, still seated on the edge of the bed. She’s into me…she says she has always been into me. But clearly the Sarah in Cognitive Psychology had a lot of the old Sarah in her as well.
The idea of her walking into the chaos of his dorm room made something tighten in his chest: a calculated desire for the setting to feel right, to look like a place where someone like her could want to stay. A cleaner room might make it easier for her to step into it, to stay with him.
Standing up, he grabbed a spare plastic bag from his desk drawer and quickly swept the visible clutter from the shared floor—Skye’s empty cans, a few crumpled wrappers—tossing them inside. He straightened the textbooks into a tighter stack, wiped the desk surface with the edge of his sleeve, and even tugged the corner of his bedsheet smoother. It wasn’t perfect, but it was better.
Satisfied for now, he glanced at the clock. He still had plenty of time before Sarah would arrive at 8 o’clock. Declan grabbed a clean towel and his shower caddy, then headed down the hall to the communal bathroom. The hot water felt good against his skin as he scrubbed away the day, letting the steam fill the stall. He took his time, making sure he smelled fresh.
He pulled on a dark navy button-down shirt, the fabric crisp and still warm from the dryer. He buttoned it slowly, leaving the top two buttons undone for a relaxed but put-together look. He paired it with his best dark jeans, the ones that actually fit well instead of the usual sweatpants or cargo shorts. A quick check in the mirror showed a cleaner, sharper Declan—hair still slightly damp but combed back, jaw clean-shaven, the shirt hugging his shoulders just enough to look intentional.
He sprayed a light mist of the cologne he rarely used, then stepped back to assess the room one more time. The bed was made, the desk tidy, the floor clearer. It wasn’t a luxury suite, but it was the best version of his space he could present.
Better, he thought as he folded the towel and set it aside.
Declan sat down at his desk and opened his Cognitive Psychology textbook to the assigned Dennett reading. He tried to focus, eyes moving across the dense paragraphs about consciousness and intentionality, but the words kept sliding away. He read the same page three times, understanding less with each . Every few sentences, his mind drifted back to Sarah—how she challenged the professor in class, how she had looked in her leather corset and skirt, the casual confidence in her voice, the way she had commanded the attention of the entire lecture hall.
Finally, he closed the book with a soft thud and leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling. Three hours felt both too long and not long enough. He could already picture her knocking on the door, stepping inside, seeing the tidied room and the version of him he had prepared. The thought made his pulse quicken.
At seven forty-five, his phone buzzed.
“On my way.”
A knock. Three sharp raps, confident.
Sarah stood in the hallway holding an overnight bag that looked expensive—black leather with silver hardware. She had changed since that afternoon. Now she was wearing tight black jeans that looked painted on, knee-high boots with a slight heel, and a cropped leather jacket over what appeared to be a black lace bralette. Her auburn curls were loose around her shoulders, and her makeup was dramatic—dark smokey eyes, deep red lips.
Declan’s ripple had amplified something sharper and more intentional in her. The old Sarah had been pretty in a polished, college-girl way; this Sarah carried herself with a confident, commanding sexuality that felt powerful rather than desperate—the painted-on jeans hugging every curve, the cropped jacket revealing a strip of smooth midriff, the black lace bralette offering teasing glimpses of cleavage—but it was styled with precision and control. She had balanced it perfectly…dressing to be looked at but never seeming like she needed attention. Her makeup was on point: the smoky eyes were expertly blended, sharp and sultry without looking messy, and the deep red lips added a bold, confident edge rather than cheap allure. Everything about her look said she had chosen this, owned it, and expected to be ired for it.
“Hi,” she said, and her voice had a breathiness to it that hadn’t been there in the lecture hall. She glanced past him into the room. “Is your roommate…?”
“Gone until eleven.”
“Perfect.” She stepped inside, and he caught her scent—something expensive and slightly musky. She set the bag on his desk and turned to face him, and the smile on her face was pure anticipation. “God, I’ve been thinking about this all day. I could barely focus.”
She unzipped the bag slowly, deliberately, letting him see the fabrics inside—white cotton, red vinyl, black leather, lace. “So,” she said. “Should I change in the bathroom, or do you want to watch?”
“The bathroom is fine,” he said, and gestured toward the narrow door beside Skye’s closet. “Take your time.”
Something flickered across her face— Sarah wondered why he hadn’t chosen to watch. She had offered him the more intimate option on purpose, expecting him to take it, to show that same hunger she felt. A small doubt stirred: Had she read the tension between them wrong? Was he more reserved than the version of him she had built up in her mind? But she quickly pushed the thought aside. He would give him the space he seemed to want—for now.
“Okay,” she said, hoisting the bag. “Be right back. Don’t go anywhere.”
She disappeared into the bathroom, and he heard the lock click. The sound of the zipper, rustling fabric. Declan sat on the edge of his bed, hands on his knees, aware of his own breathing in a way that felt unprecedented.
The bathroom door was cheap pressboard. He could hear everything—the whisper of denim sliding down, the faint snap of fabric, the soft shifting of movement in a confined space. She hummed something under her breath, a melody he didn’t recognize. Light. Almost cheerful.
“Okay,” she called through the door. “Ready?”
“Yeah.”
The door opened.
She had changed—completely. The outfit was stylized, deliberate, almost theatrical in how it framed her. The blouse was fitted and tied, the skirt short, the details coordinated down to the ribbons in her hair. She turned slowly, as if presenting the effect, then looked back at him.
“What do you think?” she asked. “Do I look like a good student, Mr. Sawyer?”
She walked toward him—not quite her normal stride, something more measured, exaggerated. When she reached him, she stepped closer, closing the distance until he had to lean back slightly just to keep space between them.
“I’ve been a very good student,” she said softly. “I’ve been studying very hard.”
Her hands settled lightly on his shoulders. Up close, he could see the precision of it all—the makeup, the expression, the way she was watching him for a reaction.
“Don’t you think I deserve extra credit?”
Her presence was overwhelming. Her sheer confidence in the role she had stepped into.
Her hand drifted, tentative at first, then more certain as she gauged his lack of resistance.
“You like smart girls,” she continued. “Girls who work hard.”
He just watched her and wondered. There is no way that the old Sarah was ever this voyeuristic. She had a confidence of her own, though…and he wondered if the Ripple had created new confidence or redirected and expanded that which she already had.
“That’s what I thought,” she murmured, a small note of satisfaction in her voice.
She shifted her weight closer, the space between them disappearing entirely now.
“I could tell,” she said. “Every time you looked at me in class. Such a naughty teacher Mr. Sawyer.”
She lowered herself slightly, her gaze never leaving his face.
“I’ve imagined this,” she added, softer now. “A lot.”
Declan’s breath caught from the strange dissonance of it all. The certainty in her voice.
She paused for half a second, just long enough to check him again.
“Tell me if you want me to stop,” she said quietly.
Her hand drifted, confident now, fingers tracing the front of his jeans until they found the belt buckle. The metal gave a soft clink as she worked it open with practiced ease, the leather sliding free. She sank to her knees between his legs in one fluid motion, the tiny plaid skirt riding up her thighs as she settled. Her hands moved to his zipper.
“I’ve imagined this so many times,” she said, looking up at him through those dark, mascara-framed lashes. “What you’d taste like. What sounds could I make you make when I finally got you in a room like this.”
The zipper came down with a quiet rasp. Cool dorm air brushed over his skin as she tugged his jeans and boxers down in a single smooth pull, freeing him completely. Sarah made a small, appreciative sound in the back of her throat—half sigh, half moan.
“God, yes,” she whispered, almost reverent. “Perfect.”
Her hand wrapped around him, warm and sure, stroking once, twice, slow and deliberate while she watched his face for every flicker of reaction. “Tell me if you want me to stop,” she said again, but the words were soft, almost teasing now—she already knew the answer. Her tongue darted out, a quick, experimental lick along the underside that made his breath hitch hard.
“I’ve been such a good student,” she breathed, that same breathy, schoolgirl tone back in full force. “I did all my homework. Studied so hard… just for you.”
She leaned in and took him into her mouth—wet heat, perfect pressure, her lips sliding down until she was as far as she could go. Her eyes stayed locked on his the whole time, dark and shining with pure devotion. There was no hesitation, no uncertainty; every movement felt like it was part of her essential being.
She hummed around him, the vibration rolling straight through his spine.
She worked him with focused enthusiasm—head bobbing in steady rhythm, one hand braced on his thigh, the other stroking what didn’t fit. When she pulled back for air, a thin string of saliva connected her smeared lips to the head of his cock; she broke it deliberately with her tongue, smiling up at him like she was proud of the mess she was making.
“Am I doing well, Mr. Sawyer?” she asked, voice husky. She didn’t wait for an answer. She dove back down, taking him deeper this time, relaxing her throat until her nose brushed his stomach. He felt the muscles of her neck working around him, slick and eager.
She varied everything—fast and sloppy, then slow and teasing, swirling her tongue, sucking harder when his hips twitched. She read his body like she had memorized it, backing off just when he was close, then diving back in with renewed hunger. The white blouse had come half-untied, the fabric gaping open to show the soft curve of her stomach, the edge of one of her breasts.
Finally, she pulled off with a wet gasp, lipstick ruined, chin shiny. Her chest was heaving.
“Not yet,” she said, voice wrecked but determined. “I want you to come inside me. I need to feel you fill me up.” She rose smoothly, hooked her thumbs under the waistband of the white cotton panties beneath the skirt, and slid them down her legs. She stepped out, leaving them in a small puddle on the floor.
She glanced at the narrow dorm bed, then back at him, eyes gleaming. “The bed? Or do you want me bent over the desk?”
Declan stood, jeans still tangled around his ankles, and took her hand. The sent a spark up his arm—her palm warm, a little damp. He kicked his jeans the rest of the way off, yanked his shirt over his head. She watched every inch of skin he revealed like it was a gift, tongue flicking out to wet her swollen lower lip.
“Yes,” she breathed as he pulled her the three short steps to the bed. “God, yes.”
She climbed onto the mattress on her hands and knees without being asked, the short plaid skirt flipping up to bare her completely. She was glistening, flushed, and ready. The cheap dorm bed creaked under her weight.
“Do you have condoms?” she asked over her shoulder, voice already shaking with need. “I brought some, but they’re still in my bag.”
He reached into the desk drawer and tore one open. She arched her back deeper, presenting herself.
“Hurry,” she whispered. “I need you inside me. I’ve needed it for so fucking long.”
He rolled it on, lined up, and pushed in with one smooth thrust. She was so wet there was almost no resistance—just tight, scorching heat that squeezed around him like she had been made for this. Sarah let out a broken moan, fingers twisting in his sheets.
“Oh fuck—yes—harder.”
He gripped her hips and gave her exactly what she was begging for. The bed frame squeaked in protest with every thrust. She pushed back to meet him, greedy and desperate, pigtails swinging. The white blouse had fallen completely open now; he could see the side of her breast bouncing with each snap of his hips.
“Tell me you’re mine,” she panted. “Tell me you want me—tell me you need to have me.”
“I’m yours,” he said, driving deeper. “I want you. Every fucking inch of you,” he cried out, the sound loud enough that he was briefly glad Skye was gone. Her hand reached back, grabbing his wrist and dragging his palm to her chest so he could feel the heavy, perfect weight of her breast, the nipple rock-hard against his skin.
“And?” Sarah almost screamed.
“And I need you, Sarah Yim. I fucking need you!”
“I’m close—don’t stop—please don’t stop—”
Her whole body locked up suddenly, back arching hard as she came with a sharp, wordless cry. He felt her pulsing around him in tight, rhythmic waves, milking him through it. Her arms gave out, and she collapsed forward, face buried in his pillow, still rocking back against him in tiny, helpless movements.
Declan kept thrusting through her orgasm, slower now, savoring every flutter and gasp. She whimpered into the pillow, oversensitive and still clenching.
“Declan… fuck… don’t stop,” she managed, voice muffled and raw. “I’m still coming… keep going…”
He felt the pressure building fast now, low and sharp in his spine. Sarah twisted suddenly beneath him, rolling onto her back in one quick motion. Her legs wrapped around his waist instantly, ankles locking behind his back, pulling him deeper.
“Inside me,” she whispered, eyes wide and glassy as she stared up at him. “I want to feel you finish inside me. Please.”
He sank back into her heat in one thrust. She arched hard, mouth open in a silent cry, nails raking down his back. The pace turned frantic—skin slapping, her breath hot against his neck, the wet sounds of her taking every inch again and again.
Sarah cupped his face with both hands, forcing his eyes to hers.
“Come on, Declan,” she begged, voice breaking. “Give it to me. I’ve waited weeks—months in my head. Fill me up.”
He buried himself as deep as he could and let go.
The orgasm crashed through him—blinding, white-hot. He groaned against her mouth as he spilled into the condom, pulse after heavy pulse, hips jerking against her. She held him there, thighs clamped tight, whispering filthy, worshipful praise right against his ear the whole time.
“Yes… just like that… good boy… give me everything…”
When it finally faded, he stayed buried inside her, both of them breathing hard, sweat-slick and tangled on the narrow bed. Sarah’s fingers traced lazy patterns on the back of his neck. She was smiling—small, soft, almost shy now that the performance had cracked open into something quieter.
She kissed the corner of his jaw, slow and lingering.
“Stay like this a minute,” she murmured. “I like feeling you still inside me.”
Her heart was hammering against his chest. The room smelled like sex and her perfume and the faint scent of his sheets.
Sarah let out a soft, contented laugh and rolled her hips. She nipped at his lower lip, playful. She squeezed around him again, deliberate and wicked.
“Your move, Mr. Sawyer.”
