Putting Things Into Their Proper Context

Chapter Three — Defending the Family

Will and Julie were, possibly, the happiest couple on Earth. Certainly within earshot, anyway, Will thought.

They had gotten together about seven months prior, each having graduated high school the previous May. At 19, and each about to turn 20 in the next couple of months, they were both excited about their futures, were fiercely committed to each other, and faithfully loyal. They’d been married for just more than three months, and currently lived together at Will’s family home.

Will had loved Julie since they started going to high school together, but she had Friend Zoned him, for a number of complex reasons. They became close friends, even confidantes, but she firmly drew the line at romance. Not because Julie hadn’t fallen for Will at first sight, too, but because she’d been given an unearned and unfair reputation at school, and didn’t want any of the pain she was going through over that to rub off on the guy she liked the most. Plus, at that age, you tended to get so embarrassed by really liking someone, that you pretend to not like them. Because having your crush find out you’re crushing on him was not only death, at ages 14 and 15, it was humiliation and death.

But life doesn’t respect things like intentions, only actions, and by pushing Will away, she’d set up a situation where she ended up dating boys that weren’t good for her, and doing things that she wasn’t emotionally prepared to do. Specifically, with her senior year boyfriend, Don. He’d been the hot guy in class, and they’d started to go out because Don wanted to fuck her. That was exciting for Julie, and allowing it to happen automatically made her one of the coolest girls at school. But, deep down, she could tell he didn’t really care for her. And deep down, she doubted she cared for him. As time went on, and she got some distance from him, she even began to realize how badly he had actually treated her.

They’d broken up right after graduation, last May, and Will, her beloved, had swooped in and rescued her heart. All of her romantic feelings for him escaped the box she’d shoved them into, and they’d started dating. Just as she was feeling healed enough from her prior relationship to want to get physically close to Will, though, something unexpected had happened. Not bad, she thought, just... unexpected.

Will was very smart, and as he told her later, had been fascinated by hypnosis and mind control (especially as they relate to sex) for a while. That had led him to the dark web, where he’d found all the data needed to pick up where 60-year-old CIA research had been abandoned, and, with modern state-of-the-art advances in many fields, was able to build his very own mind control device.

Wanting very badly to make Julie’s eyes light up again, after her break-up, Will decided that she needed a new boyfriend, to let her truly get over her last one. And, with his new device, he intended to be that new boyfriend.

So, to make a long story short, he’d used it on her after they had been dating—Will thought of it as hanging out, as he still saw himself in the Friend Zone—for nearly a month. And it had seemed to actually work wonderfully. He’d ed a command set into her brain that changed the context of how she thought about him, made her want to be with him, and of course to want a lot of sex with him, early and often. As for himself, he programmed himself to be able to hold off on cumming while making love with Julie, in order to be a better lover, and had reinforced the fact that he loved her and wanted to be with her.

She’d come to his house, where he lived with his family, on a pretext he’d made up, and he’d hit her with the ray, cleverly concealed in the front door’s frame. She’d melted into his arms, and they’d spent the rest of the day, until Will’s family came home, in bed, making love and, in between, making plans for a future together. Everything had worked exactly as he had intended, with one minor difference. Being a horny 19-year-old with a girl he’d loved for years, but had never been able to be with, what he had thought he had wanted was a final culmination, the ability to finally sleep with the girl he loved. Only thing was, unlike what he had thought, she loved him, too, and their mutual declaration of it, just as they began to have sex, transformed it. Poor Will never did manage to fuck his crush, because he ended up making love with her. With all of the emotional bonding, and deeper satisfactions, that came with it.

Will’s life had become better than he could possibly have believed it could be, the mutual bond he shared with Julie becoming so strong that it felt it could withstand anything. He’d felt a real crisis build up, though, in his own mind, as a tormenting voice kept whispering in his ear that he had altered her without her consent, had made her love and mate with him by using the device he’d made, and that made him nothing more than a rapist. So, he’d confessed his sins to her, after they had been together all summer. And she shot his self-loathing down in flames.

Turns out, yeah, Will had tried to craft a scenario that would lead Julie to be his lover. But Julie was crafting her own scenario, unaware of Will’s Better Seduction Through Electronics approach, and had been trying to summon the courage to implement it. The old-fashioned way. She’d had the same general idea that Will had had, but without the electronic aspect—use sex to express a love that she was too afraid of to confess directly. His device likely influenced her level of desire—as she put it, it “might have amped my libido up to 11, that day”—but, she carefully pointed out to him, none of things he wanted to make her feel were new to her. She was already in love with him, was already under the impression that they were dating, already planning on becoming lovers, and already thinking in of a future with him.

Will was crestfallen and abashed, but massively relieved, to see that he had not actually altered his love—now his wife—in any way that he should feel ashamed of. And in the process of confessing what he had done, she had responded by proving you can’t make someone who loves you start to love you. It’s a non-sequitur. That made their mutual trust levels soar to new heights, doing nothing except strengthen the bonds they had been forming.

But, of course, when it comes to the heart, even the most confident person can have doubts, if not in their love, then in themselves.

* * *

Will was giving Julie a backrub in their room. Julie was about six months pregnant, due in early March, and her now-large belly pulled on her back muscles, as did her expanding breasts. She loved Will’s backrubs anyway, but they were really helping her manage the aches and pains that came with her pregnancy, these days. This was their first child, so they were learning the best ways to cope with her bodily changes together. It sure hadn’t curtailed their sex life, but they found that some things weren’t as easy as normal at the moment, and had experimented with other things. All in all, they not only felt like they were navigating the first months of their marriage, and her pregnancy, pretty well, they actually were doing a good job. It helped that they were so compatible, and they worked very well together.

As near as they could tell, Will had gotten Julie pregnant that very first day they’d made love, the day he’d zapped her. It was impossible to say, but she may even have conceived at their first opportunity, period. They’d had intercourse quite a few times that first day, using no birth control, and as Will liked to point out, the fact that they started making love nearly every single day thereafter meant that it literally could have happened any time over those first couple of weeks. And they’d not been using birth control because, in her previous physical relationship, the few times she’d encountered condom failures, nothing had ever happened. So, she was convinced that just having unprotected sex wasn’t very likely to get her pregnant. The fact that she’d been wrong wasn’t the disaster it would have been with her prior boyfriend, though. She’d been terrified of accidentally getting pregnant with him, but was deliriously happy to be having Will’s baby.

Their obstetrician gave March 5th as the estimated due date, and thought the baby’s development meant that he’d been conceived on or just after that very first day. The day they’d become engaged. For convenience, they were treating that day, engagement / zapped day, as the day she conceived, and it fit the baby’s development quite well. They’d decided to name their little boy William Alan Carpenter III, but call him Bill, to differentiate him from Will, and Will’s father, who went by the nickname Bud.

In another example of how these two lovers seemed to be blessed by the gods, Julie sailed through her first trimester with no morning sickness, no debilitating nausea, no extreme fatigue. Nothing that would suggest to her that she was pregnant, except for her missing the period she expected between the end of June and beginning of July. And even that wasn’t much of a clue, because she had rather irregular periods, and had gone entire summers before without getting one.

But, when September had rolled around, she discovered that, not only had she still not had a period since May, and not only was she hungrier and eating more than normal, she was getting a gut! Then she looked at it carefully, and didn’t think it was fat. Growing very suspicious, she went and got a few home pregnancy tests. She only ended up using one of them, when it announced in no uncertain that she was pregnant.

They’d found an obstetrician at that point, who had confirmed a due date in early March, which pretty well nailed down the conception date. Julie’d had a period in late May, a little more than two weeks before she and Will first starting having unprotected sex—which placed their first time right smack in the middle of her fertile cycle. So, yep—if it hadn’t been that first day, the day they ended up engaged, it had been within the following week or two at most.

Once Julie confirmed that she was expecting, she really started to crave having Will around as much as possible, and to have as much of a system as possible, too. Her folks were good people, and she loved them, but Will’s Dad, stepmom and stepsister had made it very clear that she’d be welcome to live in their house, with Will, especially after they found out a baby was on the way, and they were getting married within days. She thought there would be less tension with that arrangement, than having Will move in with her at her folks’ house. And since the college she was going to (although taking a semester off to have the baby), and that Will was now attending, only let students live in their dorms, or at home with parents, before junior year, living with one set of parents or the other was the best option.

They’d been living with Will’s composite family since then, though her moving in consisted mainly of her moving a small dresser, a vanity/desk, and most of her clothes into Will’s room. Luckily, Will only had one fairly small dresser and a desk, himself, so, with the bed, everything fit pretty well. They had to rotate both her and his clothing, packing up seasonal clothes into plastic bins and keeping them in the attic to make room for both of their hanging clothes in his small-ish closet, rotating as fall turned to winter, but the simple comingling of their stuff made both of them feel good. As if their lives were twining together properly. And besides, by January, most of Julie’s wardrobe had to go into the attic, anyway, since she was only able to wear her expectant mother clothes, by then.

They’d also gathered up Will’s family and her folks, and had a City Hall civil wedding the same week Julie moved in. They didn’t need the sheet of paper to prove their commitment to each other, but places like schools, hospitals—and eventually landlords—seemed hung up on it. Besides, they’d considered themselves a mated pair, whatever labels anyone wanted to apply to it, since last June. At least “husband and wife” came closer to defining how they saw themselves than any other set of labels. Julie, of course, had grown up dreaming of having a nice church wedding, with a dress, walking down the aisle, and all of that, and Will would never deny her that. But it made more sense to get the piece of paper now, and have the big wedding later, so that’s what they did.

As Will worked on Julie’s sore back, they chatted about their days. Will had just started taking classes at the college they were both attending, even though he’d intended on taking a year off between high school and college. But seeing as how Julie, who had finished her fall term, was on hiatus until the next fall term, to give her time to have their baby and get the hang of being a new Mom, it made sense. This way, they’d graduate together. He told her about his classes, and she told him about how she had finally had to ask her sister-in-law Jenny for help, getting up out of the beanbag chair in their family room. “I knew the day was coming soon, that I wouldn’t be able to get up from that chair by myself. But Jenny was very sweet, helping me. I’m really happy we decided to live here—your whole family has been wonderful to me.” Will could tell that Julie and Jenny got along really well, which was good. Jules was only a year older than Jen, but they fell immediately into big sis-little sis roles that eased tensions all around.

Will returned the familial compliment, telling his wife “I’m happy how well our families are getting along. Your folks started out a little bit skeptical, I think. Your Mom seemed worried, that we got engaged after only dating a month, and that we got married three months later because I’d gotten you pregnant so early on.”

“Very first time, baby. I’m tellin’ ya, it makes the most sense. Jenny and your folks all agree.”

“Okay, okay, I it it, could very well have been,” Will said. “But I worried about that even more—how many parents of girls look fondly upon boys who knock their little girls up at the very first opportunity?”

“They’ve come around,” Julie said. “Mom actually likes you, now. You’re very good at presenting yourself as an earnest young man who’s determined to make a splash in the world. She’s even told me right out, that she thinks I made the right choice. She’d been afraid we were being impulsive, though, she had told me. I corrected her—I told her that, when you find the person who’s right for you, as right for me as you are, for example, and it’s this obvious, it’s not being impulsive to commit. It’s the smartest move you can make, because you don’t waste all that time, going through so many options, when the absolute best thing is standing right there next to you.

“I finally told her the full story of how Donny had hurt me, and how you had rescued me. I’d, um, never told my Mom everything about Don. She wouldn’t have approved of me being that sexually active while I was still in high school. But, I finally told her. And I told her that I’d spent enough time with Don to know all about sex, but it wasn’t until you touched me that I understood what making love was all about.”

Will didn’t have to say anything. He knew exactly what she meant.

“My Mom actually cried when I told her that,” Julie continued. “Of course, this was after everyone knew I was expecting, so the cat was so far out of the bag, as far as me being sexually active was concerned, that she’d had some time to accept that her little girl had grown up. But after that—I think we had that talk around Thanksgiving—she’s been a lot better being together. A lot happier for me, that I ended up with you and not some guy like Don.”

“Or Don.”

“Or Don, yeah,” Julie said. And shivered involuntarily. “I still get creeped out, thinking about how close I might have come to getting trapped into a life with him. Or, if not him, someone like him. If you hadn’t swooped in and been my knight in shining armor.”

Will smiled at that, and said “That reminds me of something, love. I know we think that the immediate effect of the ray hitting you was to have your desire amped up to, like, 11, but I just ed what I think was my immediate mental reaction to the command set I loaded into myself. I standing at the open door, looking at you, and as my confidence surged, I suddenly had the image of myself on a great white steed, attired in shining armor, spear and lance at the ready, rushing headlong into the Friend Zone walls I’d always felt between us. And after I’d dashed those walls into shards, I intended to sweep my Fair Maiden into my arms. It was an instantaneous impression, but I can still it.”

“That’s crazy, babe,” Julie said, “because I literally see you like that, sometimes, when I close my eyes and just think about you. Do you think your device, I don’t know, linked our minds for just a split second?”

“I can’t think of any way it could,” Will said, “but I agree, sometimes it feels like we’re really on the same wavelength. I love it, but yeah, I’ve noticed it. I’ve always heard that couples who get very close, or live with each other a long time, end up finishing each other’s sentences, after a while. I think it’s just natural for people who are as close as we are to have those kinds of moments.” Will kissed his wife’s bare shoulder, and went on, “But, I will it, darling, about half the time, these days, you and I talk through glances, winks and raised eyebrows. Words are getting optional, about a lot of things.” Julie tilted her head back, blinked and smiled at him in response, conveying the thought “Yep, and I love it!” which just proved his point.

They were listening to the Classic Rock playlist from Julie’s Spot-A-Fee music service through Will’s laptop, as the backrub began to threaten to morph into foreplay, when the laptop began to make an odd beeping sound. Will, annoyed his move on his lovely wife was being interrupted, pulled the laptop closer to him, paused the music, and saw a tab flashing on its desktop.

It was the control system software for his mind control device, what he called the Instant Trance Generator and Traits Adjustment System, or ITG-TAS, that he had cobbled together out of plans stashed on the dark web for something the original CIA developers, back in the 60s, called the personality sequencer. After Will had confessed to building and using it on her, they had used it together a few times, with each other’s knowledge and consent, in order to add appreciations for a number of fetishes and less common sex acts they might use to spice up their bedtimes. But they hadn’t touched it in a couple of months, partially because Will didn’t know at what point the baby’s brain might be influenced by it. The research he had found, a lot of which came from the 1960s, suggested it wouldn’t be a problem, but they had both wanted to play it safe.

Now the control program for the thing was flashing and making a beeping sound, which was crazy, because he hadn’t even opened the program. Will pulled up the ITG-TAS control screen, and what he saw immediately filled him with unease. A message said “Alterations made 6/6/26 about to roll off” and, next to it, a counter that was counting down, sweeping past three minutes already.

June 6? That had been the day he and Julie had become lovers.

“Oh shit oh shit ohshitohshitohshitohshit....” was Will’s basic response to this.

“What?” asked Julie. “What is it, babe?”

“Um, here, look,” he said, as he swung the screen around so she could see. “It says that your initial command set load, the first one, is about to roll off.” She could see in his eyes that he was terrified.

“What’s supposed to happen when it rolls off?” she asked.

“I don’t know. I’d decided that the effects were likely permanent, when they didn’t show any signs of rolling off for the first couple of months. I don’t have a clue what this is supposed to mean.”

“Well, babe,” Julie said, “it looks like we’re about to find out. Look.” The clock on the screen had counted down, and was now sweeping through its last 10 seconds or so.

“Whatever happens, Jules, I’ll always love you!”

The clock hit zero, and a faint blue glow seemed to envelop the couple, then quickly disperse. They looked up, each one searching frantically for their spouse in the eyes of the other.

Julie took a deep breath, looked at Will, and said “Um, hi. How are you feeling?” Will reached out, took her hand, and said “I feel normal, I think.” Then he said the only thing he could think of, which was “I’m still madly in love with you.”

A small smile flashed across Julie’s face, and was quickly schooled into a quizzical expression. She looked at his hand, then his face, and said, “Wait... what? In love with me?” Before Will could do or say anything, or wail in anguish, Julie decided she couldn’t hold the fake expression, lost it, laughed and pulled him towards her, kissing him with the same fervor she always did.

As their kiss broke, and Will saw the mischievous twinkle in his wife’s eye, he said “You did that on purpose!”

She laughed and said “Of course I did, love. You should have seen your face! But I couldn’t keep it up for more than a split second, because it might have hurt you. And I could never do that, I love you too much. You know that.”

“But... if it wore off...” Will started to reply, but his wife cut him off.

“Who cares if that command set that amped me up last June wore off? It hasn’t really been applicable since that day, anyway, right? We’ve set up far more secure and permanent command sets in each other, now, sweetling. The old-fashioned way. It’s called sharing your life, your heart, your bed and your soul with someone for months on end. Reinforcing every bit of love, respect—and yeah, attraction—that we ever had for each other.

“That thing,” she pointed at the laptop display, “might have given us a hot start, but it didn’t change anything about how we really felt, how much we really cared for each other. And after months and months of basking in the glow of your love, my husband, you’ve got me so hooked in that there’s nothing I can imagine that would ever change how I feel. Or how intensely. I hate to say it,” she finished, “but you’re stuck with me, babe.”

With big smiles, and the same high levels of desire they’d always had for one another, the kiss that followed ended in a near-epic session of lovemaking. Julie had told Will that pregnancy hormones can make a gal really horny, and they’d found that to be the case with her. She was still not so large that any of their really favorite positions were getting terribly difficult, but they were keeping an eye on it and making sure they did nothing to hurt the baby.

The one secret fear he’d had, seeing that message on his laptop, was that his own command set from that day, which suggested he’d be a great lover for Julie by being able to hold his orgasms back as long as he wanted, might not be effective anymore. But both that ability, and his wife’s odd tie-in to it that let her command him when to cum, as well as letting him hold off if he wanted, seemed to be completely intact. It seemed that their emotional connection ruled those physical responses more than they had guessed.

* * *

By mid-February, Julie was getting closer and closer to her early March due date. She was indeed about as large as she would get, sometimes letting Will or Jenny bring meals or snacks to her, in her and Will’s room, or, if she did foray out into the family room, living room or dining room, she tended to stay put there for a while. It wasn’t that the stairs were all that difficult, and it was a split-level house, so there were only half flights to take at a time. But she was into the waddling-gait phase of pregnancy locomotion, and it worried her that she hadn’t come close to seeing her feet in several weeks.

She and Will were gently celebrating Valentine’s Day early—it was only February 12th, but being a Friday night, they’d decided it was a great chance to spend some quality time in their room, since Will didn’t have any classes the next morning. They were taking a breather when Julie’s phone rang. She grabbed it from the nightstand, looked at the display, and said “Oh, it’s my Mom. I wonder what she wants at this hour?” Granted, it was only about 10:30pm, but her folks were always early to bed types, even on Friday nights.

Julie answered it, and had a conversation with her Mom that Will couldn’t make a ton of sense out of. First of all, Julie appeared concerned, maybe even upset, and was saying things like “He did, did he?” and “You didn’t give him my info or anything, right?” After a fairly short call, Julie hung up and turned to her husband.

“Mom says Don has been calling their house, asking for me. And that he came by tonight, demanding to see me. They told him that I didn’t live there anymore, and that they didn’t think it appropriate to give him any information about me. He was talking a little crazy, they said, that he needed to find me because there’d been a mistake, I’d misunderstood something, and he’d come to ‘get’ me and take me with him.”

“Oh, shit,” Will said. “I always knew he was a spoiled rich kid, but is he actually crazy enough to be coming back after you, babe?”

“Oh, God, I hope not,” she said. “I mean, one of the reasons I wasn’t very happy, by the time it ended, was how possessive he would get. Which is why it was so infuriating that, out of one side of his mouth, he was telling me I wasn’t allowed to have any male friends, and out of the other, he was telling nearly every girl he met that it was OK, he could fuck them, I didn’t mean anything to him. So, yeah, like I’ve said, he ended up being a creep and an asshole. But his Daddy is a big-time lawyer in the town, so he never has to suffer any consequences. His Daddy always fixes everything for him. I could tell stories... but that’s not going to help, right now.”

“OK, then,” Will said, attacking the issue logically, “let’s focus on how to protect you from him, if he decides to make some kind of trouble. I know you haven’t kept it a secret from your old friends that we got married, you’re living here, and expecting soon. How easy do you think it would be for him to find this address and start harassing you here?”

“Probably not that hard at all. He’s not the sharpest crayon in the box, but he has money, so he just pays people to find stuff out for him. Or has his Daddy pay them.”

“You don’t much like his father, do you, babe?”

“How much would you like someone who would proposition his son’s girlfriend? Repeatedly?”

“You’re kidding me. Really?”

“Yeah. Like I said, I could tell stories. I haven’t, because... it wouldn’t do any good. The point is, if Don had some crazy notion that he wanted to harass me, it’d be easy for him to get his Daddy—and Daddy’s money—behind it.”

“OK,” Will said. A nascent plan was tugging at the corners of his brain, but it wasn’t well formed enough to pin down, yet. The one thing that occurred to him, though, was that he had a resource neither Donny nor his Daddy could even guess at. And it was controlled by his very own laptop.

He knew what the ITG-TAS could do, and he knew what it likely could not do. The concept was a failure in the intelligence community because it wasn’t very good at making people do or say things they didn’t really want to, deep down. As his thinking started to take shape, Will realized that he was going to have to ask his wife some uncomfortable questions, to figure out what kinds of things they could make Don do, and say, that would serve both to keep him away from Julie, and yet be consistent with things that, in a reasonable context, he’d be likely to want to do.

“Honey,” Will said, “I know this is unpleasant. I’m going to be right by your side, no matter what. But I need to ask you a few questions. No matter how you feel about them, I need you to answer completely truthfully. First, did Don ever hit you?”

His wife looked suddenly very miserable, then suddenly began to sob and said “Yes. A couple of times. And he was the kind of person who would absolutely convince you that it was your own fault.” And then she sobbed into his shoulder.

“It’s okay, babe, it’s okay, he’s not here, I’ve got you. He’ll never be able to get to you again, I promise.”

“But... Will, what must you think of me? Letting that happen? I.... I know what I think of me.” She looked wretched.

“Babe, it is not your fault. Listen to me, guys like that are experts at using good people like you. Unless you’re as twisted and horrible as they are, you can’t see it coming. I love you! And the only thing that matters to me, about ANYTHING that you did with Don, is to make sure he can never use it, or anything else, to hurt you or our child. Ever.”

“Thank you, sweetheart,” Julie said. “What else were you thinking?”

“Um, I know he probably didn’t do it in front of you all that much, but... did the guy just hit on everything female that came within view? No matter who? I always got the feel from him, at school, that he thought of himself as a pick-up artist. Is that true?”

“Is it ever! And, I mean, I hate to say it, but, by objective standards at least, he’s hot, as well as rich. He’s got that 5′9″, beard stubble, fighter pilot type of cool vibe. And because he’s not a big, tall guy, I think maybe he overcompensates by convincing himself that little guys are cool. Sort of an anime vibe, you know? I know most all the girls in my class thought it was hot. Them being jealous of me didn’t make up for how he treated me, though. Even when I’d do whatever he asked...

“But, babe,” she said, “what are you thinking? Why are you trying to figure out what turns his twisted little crank? How will that help?”

“Well, you see, my dear, if he shows up at this house uninvited, I will feel absolutely justified in using every tool at my disposal to deal with him. And, as you happen to know, I have a most unusual tool available.”

“Your zapper! Yes!” A gleam appeared in his wife’s eye. “Shoot him with it and make him forget he has to open his fly before he pisses, or something!”

“I like the idea, but it’s not that simple. me telling you why this thing was never very useful to the spy community? Because it doesn’t work at all well to make people do things they don’t want to do. Like with any type of hypnosis, the only way people will do things they usually would resist, when given commands like this, is to put it into a context they’ll accept. It’s unlikely there’s a context in which most people would find it normal to piss while fully clothed. So, that would likely cause an easily dismissed urge.

“But, babe, if this guy likes to act stupid to show off—and sorry if that’s pretty blunt, but you know what I mean—then it might be possible to make him act SO stupid that it gets him into serious trouble. Enough trouble that we can use that as ammo to push back with against his Daddy’s money. Enough to keep them away from you. From us.”

“You mean, like make him be such a show-off in his car that he kills himself or something?” Julie said. “You know I wouldn’t hurt a fly, but in his case I’d make an exception,” she added grimly.

“Yeah, something like that, except, hearing you say it like that, I worry about innocent bystanders. But something along those lines.”

Right then, they could hear a car engine with a poor muffler system pulling into their driveway. Glancing through the window, Will said, “Huh? Who do we know who drives a Lamborghini?”

“Donny, that’s who, damnit!” Julie cried. “What the fuck?!”

Before they could even discuss things further, the doorbell rang, There was no time to fire up the ITG-TAS or anything like that; Will settled for pulling up the Ding Doorbell camera, and setting it to record the feed separately from the Ding servers, just to have their own copy. In case it came in handy.

Jenny had been in the living room, so she went to answer the door. She opened it to find a guy standing there, in a black leather jacket and feathered hair that looked like it required a stylist’s attention every time he went out. He was just about the same height as Jenny, maybe an inch shorter. He looked around like he was trying to evaluate just how much more expensive everything his family owned was than what he saw in the Carpenter home. Jenny recognized him as Donny Vance, the guy who had been dating Julie during her senior year. The “cool girls clique” all thought he was the hottest thing in the Universe, but she’d always found him a totally full-of-himself creep. She’d wondered what Julie had seen in him, but her sister-in-law had steered clear of talking about him. She gathered it was a bad relationship and worse break-up.

“Where is she, Red?” Don said, without preamble.

“Excuse me?!” Jenny replied. She had no use for people who called her “Red” just because of her hair color.

“Julie Hall. My girlfriend. I heard some perv’s hiding her here. Hand her over.”

“There is no one by that name in this house,” Jenny said. Which was very true—Julie’s last name was now Carpenter, a fact that she adored. “Now, please leave.”

Don tried to push his way past Jenny and through the door, but bless her, Jen’s cheerleader muscles served her well. She blocked him, pushed him back out the door, and said “Leave before I call the cops, idiot!”

At which point, Don said “Aw, don’t be like that, Red. Hey, if I can’t come in and look for Julie, how’s about you and me go for a spin in my Lambo? Most expensive car in the world!”

Jenny thought to herself, “Is this is stupidest guy on Earth?” Then, not thinking of anything better to say, said “Are you the stupidest guy on Earth?!” right to his face.

“Hey, take it easy, Red. Once I get Julie all locked down, there’s lots of time for you and me to go have some fun, right?”

“If you know what’s good for you,” Jenny seethed, “you’ll leave now and never come back! Final warning!” And then she slammed the door in his face.

Jenny stood there, trembling, after having to confront someone so vile. It had felt good to shove him back out the door, but she had a bad feeling he might be back.

As soon as the roar of the not-street-legal Lambo tore out of their driveway and sped away, Will bounded out of his room and down to the living room, to ask Jenny if she was all right. Julie followed, at her best waddle speed, and the three of them sat in the living room, discussing what had just happened.

One of the first things Julie said was that Don had gotten worse. “He used to be full of himself, but now...? He’s way over the top. I’ve never seen him act that disgusting. If he’d ever acted that bad around me, he’d have ended up losing his goddamn balls, I’ll tell you that!”

Jenny, who was still trembling, laughed and said “It would serve him right!”

“At least he asked for you by your maiden name,” Will said. “That means that, while he tracked you down to this house, he doesn’t have the info that we’re married. Yet. I’m assuming you had him blocked everywhere, which is why he’s playing the private eye game.”

“Yes, on my phone and social media. Or else I would have known he was trying to find me, I guess.”

“Guys, what are you going to do?” Jenny asked. “What if he comes back?”

“First, when our folks get home, I’m going to tell them what happened, let them know we might need to get the police involved. And then tomorrow, I’m going to wire a bunch of window alarms and extra cameras into the Ding system. If he tries to get into this house, there are two people here right now who are bigger and stronger than he is, and when Dad gets home, that’ll make three. If he tries to break into this house, with what I already have recorded from tonight, he’s going down. And I think he knows it, he’s not coming back tonight.”

“You recorded that?” Jenny asked.

“Yep. I’ve, um, experimented with pulling in the Ding Camera feed to my laptop, so I can see who’s at the door if the bell rings, while Julie and I are in our room and no one else is at home,” he explained, mostly truthfully. “So, even if he didn’t break any laws, yet, that recording will go a long way towards proving state of mind.”

“And for tonight,” Julie said to Jenny, “maybe you should give George a call and ask if he can come over. If that idiot did manage to get into the house, I know I’d feel better if you had that big guy in bed with you. At least think about it, please, Jen?”

“That’s the best idea I’ve heard yet,” Jenny said, and went to grab her phone and give her boyfriend a call.

“We’re going back to our room for now,” Will called after her. “Hang in there, Jen, we’ll figure this out.”

Back in their room, Will and Julie waited for Will’s Dad and stepmom to come home from the dinner date they’d been planning all week. In the meantime, Julie started to talk aloud about what kinds of approaches they might use with Don.

“Why was he calling me his girlfriend?” Julie wondered, firstly. “I broke up with him on VERY definite I-never-want-to-see-you-again . Has he become so, so... divorced from reality that he thinks he can stroll back in, say sweet nothings—or worse, just give orders—and have me swoon over him like nothing ever happened? I KNOW I made it clear that nothing he could ever say or do would regain my trust. Does he just... not give a shit what I think? That I’ll do what he says, just because he says so?!

“I think something in him must have snapped. Maybe one too many girls told him what they really thought of him, and he’s just... snapped.” It was so hard for her, Will saw, to see how badly this guy was turning out, how ashamed she was that she’d ever bought into his narcissism, and yet, how lucky she was to have escaped him.

Will would just have to make VERY sure she escaped him for good, this time.

“I’m getting an idea as to how we can do this,” Will said. “I hate to say it, but Jenny is going to have to be the bait, if it works the way I think it ought to work. But, if we do it right, we can solve the Donny issue once and for all. And no one has to know about our secret device.”

* * *

Together, Will and Julie put together their plan. It wasn’t without risk, but considering how powerful Don’s Daddy was, they needed overwhelming and graphic evidence to get him sent away, with no possibility of later attack from his father.

Of course, it involved using the device. And it was something of a sting operation, in that they were going to try to entice Don to come back to the house, to follow up on his stated intention to try and collect Julie and take her away. When he got there, they’d hit him with a command set that would simply encourage every hideous slimy aspect of his personality to come out, as if he was proud of them. Which, to be fair, he was already acting proud of being a slimeball. It was just a matter of pushing him completely over the edge, making him buy into his existing certainty that EVERYONE—especially attractive redheads—should drop trou and bend over as he approached, just in case he wanted to fuck them up the ass.

They got the command set all crafted, with Julie suggesting several ways to enhance what they were trying to do. It helped that she had seen his dark side, albeit under better control than it seemed to be now, and knew several of the buttons to push that would get the desired results. It didn’t take all that long.

Then he had Julie unblock Don’s number and text him “WTF, why are you looking for me? We’re over! Go away!” She’d leave it unblocked for now, but not answer any voice calls. They figured he wouldn’t be able to ignore the text, and would announce exactly when he was planning to come and “collect” her. And forcing him to do it by text, which he’d be easily goaded into, provided another piece of evidence in the electronic paper trail they needed, to help put him away. With any luck, he’d put his kidnapping threat—or worse—into writing.

They got their folks, Jenny and George in on it, to the extent that they told them Julie’s old boyfriend was having mental issues, and was trying to kidnap her, which was true, just not the whole story. The plan was to keep Julie out of sight, and when Don turned up, have Jenny answer the door, with George standing behind the door. Jenny would explain that Julie would not see him, and when, as anticipated, he burst in stating his intent to kidnap Julie, once that was on tape from the five different cameras that would be recording the scene, George would grab and hold him, and Will’s Dad would call the police in.

This was where things got risky, because just threatening to kidnap Julie might not get Don out of the way. His lawyer Daddy might find a way to get him off, so that he could continue to harass her, Will, and everyone else he cared about. So, the real plan was a lot more dangerous. And, if it was to work without the need to give away the existence of his device, Will couldn’t tell his family how dangerous. It was worth it, but it still scared him.

* * *

The trap had been set, in that the command set was all set up, face shots from the tape he’d saved off had been loaded for the system to acquire Don as its target, and a quick check-out of the interfaces showed that, even with the new cameras and alarms added into the system, the interface with the front door camera, and the ITG-TAS projector, was nice and stable.

Julie had unblocked Don, sent the text, and they’d sat down to wait. It didn’t take long. He first called her, and when she didn’t pick up, he texted her. He’d apparently done more research, because he texted her “U preg? Gotta be my kid! Kid o my proprty MY kid! Im tak you both with me now! Got docs on payroll, will pruv it mine, cheting bitch.”

This guy was so stupid his textspeak looked like it was by a first grader, for Christ’s sake, Will thought. “Any objections to taking him down now?” Will asked his wife. “None whatsoever,” she replied grimly. He wasn’t just threatening her—he was threatening their child. No matter what happened, Will swore at that moment that Don would never come close to his wife again.

Will sent Condition Red to everyone. It was a Sunday, so everyone was already home, including George. Will had choreographed it so no one noticed that the only male who would be in range of the projector, at the front door, would be Don. There was only the male frequency slot being sent out in this config, so Will didn’t want any other males anywhere close to the beam. Including his unborn son. George would be closest, but Will was certain that the mass of the door he was standing behind would block the rays from him. He still had George crouch down, to be as safe as possible.

Will has urged Jenny to be less argumentative, just stand there and refuse to let him in, but he knew that, however it unfolded, this plan would result in her getting at least a little traumatized. Will showed everyone that last text—including Jen—so there was no one here who wasn’t willing to do whatever it took to take this guy down. Threaten their Julie and little unborn Billy, would he? No one was going to feel guilty over what happened next, that was for sure, Will thought.

Then the doorbell rang. Jenny opened the door, and Don stood there, looking like he was about to pick her up and toss her aside. Then, a faint blue mist sparkled around him—and thankfully, around no one else—and in the blink of an eye, a command set loaded. It said: “You don’t need that Hall bitch! What good’s a pregnant cow? You’re the sexiest man alive! You can do WAY better! You can have this redhead! You need to tell the redhead to get on her knees and suck you, before you beat her to death! Then tell her exactly how you’re going to rape her as you shove her down! Because no one has the right to say no to you! Everyone HAS to do what YOU SAY, or THEY DIE! YOU ARE LARGE AND IN FUCKING CHARGE!!!”

It confirmed and enhanced every bad thing in the guy’s head, and set the dial up to 11. And then, Will saw with his own eyes the difference between himself and an actual rapist.

As soon as the command set started to load, Donny froze, eyes dilating, and then stared right at Jenny.

“I told you before, there’s no one...” Jen started to say, when an absolute crazed look came over Donny’s face. He screamed “SHUT UP! I don’t need that fat bitch! I can have anything I want! Get on your fucking knees and blow me, Red!” With an insane burst of energy, Donny shoved her back into the living room past the doorway, and then pushed her to the ground, bellowing, “And you better be good, because then you’re getting it up the ass and in your pussy! All night long! Ain’t nobody can stop me!!!! I said on your FUCKING KNEES, BITCH! UNLESS YOU WANNA DIE RIGHT THE FUCK NOW!!!”

That was exactly how long it took George to spring up from behind the door, grab Donny, pick him two feet off the ground by his neck, and tell him “You say one more word to my fiancée, and I’m gonna start breaking bones. Starting with the ones behind your balls!” Don actually screamed, “Try it, punk! You don’t DARE try to stop me from raping Red, there! Put me down now, and I may leave her alive for you!” Which got George off of any consideration for charges being pressed, later, over what happened next.

Will actually enjoyed hearing those bones crack. Julie later itted that she did, too. Jenny, still trembling on the floor, was shouting encouragement and suggesting more bones to break. Coming in to the room after yelling for his Dad to call the police, Will told George not to kill the guy; no one would charge him with assault over this, after seeing that tape, but it got harder to handle if the guy died. So, George, his eyes still a little glazed over, dropped Don’s unconscious form, and went to sit on the floor next to Jenny, where he held her until they both stopped trembling.

Julie, who had finally waddled her way down the half flight of stairs and ed the party, first went over to the huddled form of her ex, gave him a sharp kick to the side of his head, and then slowly sat down in the living room. She was the first one to pick up on what George had been saying, before the bone-crunching had begun. “Um, Jenny? Did I hear George call you his fiancée?” she asked. And so it was that, with a bleeding predator lying unconscious on the floor, and a pregnant stepsister-in-law, a bemused stepbrother, a gobsmacked stepfather, and a mother who looked about to out, all staring at her, Jenny said “Oh, yeah, we were gonna tell you later. George asked me to marry him earlier, and I said yes.”

Don was in pretty bad shape, once the police and the ambulance arrived, but a very quick review of the footage from the five different cameras that were recording the scene left no doubt. Don was guilty of all sorts of extremely socially unacceptable crimes—crimes that came with very stiff penalties—all acted out in front of witnesses and cameras. With the footage stored on 27 different servers, and an unspecified number of flash drives. One set of each were in safe deposit boxes by the next morning. Will heard later that Don had 39 broken bones, all told. Including his pelvic floor. Alas, his testicles couldn’t be saved, but at least that ensured that his genes couldn’t be ed down to any unfortunate kids he might have otherwise had. The rather large number of bones involved had something to do with how many bones there are in human hands and feet.

He recovered, at least after a fashion, but as soon as he was able to be discharged, he was taken to prison to await trial on attempted rape and attempted murder charges. Julie had decided not to press attempted kidnapping charges; she wanted to stay out of the media circus the arrest had generated. And faced with overwhelming evidence, plus the evidence that, if they were given any trouble, the attempted kidnapping charges would be brought, Don’s lawyers ended up pleading him guilty, in hopes of leniency in the sentencing. Which he did not get. But it did keep Julie, Jenny and George from having to go through the trauma of testifying at the trial. Their written affidavits were sufficient.

It didn’t help Don’s stay in prison, as well, that he seemed to have not learned his lesson, but kept trying to order people around who were much bigger and stronger than he was. It was like he’d gone full Andrew Tate, acting like he was the only alpha male alive, even after getting the crap beat out of him many, many times for it. All in all, both Will and Julie thought he got off light, overall. After threatening to take their child.

Donny’s Daddy called the house the day after, making all sorts of threats. Will e-mailed him the camera footage, along with a general idea of how many more copies there were. Plus told him of the attempted kidnapping charges that were being held as a contingency, in case he or his son tried to mess with them. Will even hinted at having this Epstein wannabe on tape, propositioning underage girls, with several of them quite willing to testify about it in court. The fact that this bluff was never called, and that Donny’s Daddy relocated his law offices across the country later in the year, made Will suspect that the guy had so many skeletons in his closet that he decided someone who’d beaten his son down so thoroughly as to leave him a broken husk of a human being probably wouldn’t be bluffing.

It was over.

* * *

A lot of the legal stuff was still in work by the time Julie went into labor, right on March 5th as predicted, but everyone was satisfied that neither Don nor his Daddy had any reasonable way to try and hurt them, anymore. So, it was a much happier event, when little Billy Carpenter came into the world, early in the morning of March 6th. It was a safe and normal childbirth. The baby was healthy, Julie came through it fine, and was already breast-feeding the little one before they left the hospital.

They came back home to a nice little surprise—their folks had chipped in and bought them a nice, if small, mobile home, which was just being set up in the Carpenter’s big back yard. It had all of the conveniences of being a small, separate apartment, but still qualified as “living with parents” for the school’s purposes. It was their own space, but, they were told, it was just a detached add-on to the house. In other words, they could still take their meals with the family and hang out in the main house as much as they liked, and in fact, they were encouraged to hang out with the family as much as possible. This just gave them some space—and both a bedroom for themselves and a nursery for the baby—that was all their own.

Will suspected the idea was to also have a separate space so that baby crying at 3am didn’t keep the whole house up, but if they were hoping for that, it may have been a bit in vain. Because, a few months later—in fact, in early June—Jenny was visiting with Julie and Billy in their trailer, which she loved to do, and started asking a few pointed questions. Like, “How did you get away without getting morning sickness?” and “When did you first suspect you were pregnant? What made you think so?”

It didn’t take long to find out that Jenny, who was now 19—Julie’s age when she’d gotten pregnant—strongly suspected she was in a family way. “My periods are usually pretty regular,” she said, “and the one I’ve been expecting is about three weeks late, now. And I’m getting some nausea. George and I had a condom failure at about the right time, and um...”

Julie thought she knew where this was going, but just said “Um, yes?”

Jenny confirmed Julie’s suspicions, saying “Well, we’d already had one condom break that day, and I’d gotten all, um, filled up, you know?” Julie smiled, knowing exactly what she meant. And how much she, herself, enjoyed it. “And we figured, what the hell, why not... and, um, made love like three more times that night. Without, like... bothering with them.”

“I had condom failures with that creep, Don, a couple of times,” Julie said. “The difference was, when I was with him, a condom failure was a path towards a potential living hell. It wasn’t something I was interested in, at all. I was so happy when nothing ever happened, but I have to tell you, Jen, I wasn’t sure I didn’t have fertility problems.

“But, with Will, I used my imagined fertility issues to convince myself it was OK to go ahead, without any birth control. Because getting pregnant with Don would have been a nightmare, but getting pregnant with Will was... not a problem. It was all reversed, instead of being afraid of any of Don’s semen sneaking into me, I was absolutely craving it from Will. The very small possibility of a condom failure terrified me, with the creep, but the small possibility I wouldn’t get pregnant, after all that we’d... um, after as much opportunity as we gave it...”

“You mean the amount of his jizz he pumped into you that first day, right?” Jenny said with a smile.

“Um, yeah, you could say that,” Julie said, smiling, thinking fondly back on that day. “I just figured that, if I got pregnant, it would at least be with the guy I actually loved. And that meant that... it wasn’t a risk. Sort of the opposite, you know?”

“Yeah. What you’re saying is, if George and I had been terrified of getting pregnant, we wouldn’t have done it three more times au naturel.”

“Exactly. Which means...”

“It means I’m gonna get big as a house, just like you did,” Jenny said, with feigned resignation.

“Well, yeah. But more, it means that you’re with the right guy. For you. Because, when the situation came up, for both of you, it wasn’t something to fear. It was an opportunity. And you did what you knew was right, good and safe, for you. You went for it.”

“Yeah... But, hey, I’m not even sure, yet,” she said. “If I am, it’s only been about a month at most. The pregnancy tests aren’t very accurate until it’s been six to eight weeks.”

“It can’t hurt to check,” Julie said. “Besides, they’re pretty cheap. And... I bought three when I wanted to test myself, but the first was such a strong positive, I never used the other two. Let me give them to you. I’m pretty sure they’re in one of the drawers in my bedside tale, here. I just ask one favor in return.”

“What, sis?”

“That, if they say positive, I want to be the second person you tell. George being the first, of course.”

Two days later, it was official. Billy would have a cousin, roughly a year younger, maybe a few weeks less. Jenny was so very happy, when she found out, that Julie thought she had finally gotten completely over the trauma that being attacked by Donny had caused. When Julie told Will, she said her mind was finally at peace over the whole thing.

“I was so sorry to have to put Jen in harm’s way, to accomplish what had to be done,” Will said. “I’m just glad it’s all worked out for the best.”

“Yes,” she said, finally able to relax with her husband. “You saved me from Don. Twice. We found each other, and we’re never letting go. We have a beautiful little boy, and with the IUD I had fitted, we can continue to enjoy making love without making a new baby every time we do. But we seem to be very fertile together, so as soon as we want a little baby brother or sister for Bill, it shouldn’t be an issue at all.

“It’s... everything. All of the things I ever wanted. And it’s all because of you.”

“It’s because of us, dear. Both of us. Have I told you lately how much I love you?” he added.

“Not since we put our clothes back on, babe. Or do you just love me for my body, stretch marks and all?”

“I love you for the ‘and all,’ darling,” Will said, as he kissed his wife. “Every tiny little thing about you. Hey, I have a great idea...”

“What, sweetling?”

“I should use my device to make you love me, so we can have a bunch of kids and live happily ever after.”

“It’ll never work, sweets. You can’t make me love you any more than I already do. Just can’t happen.”

In 20 minutes, after a fireworks show of appreciation, Julie looked at her man, and panted “Oh... you meant... THAT... device...! I may... need... to revise... that last... comment... then...” as she caught her breath, and they nestled into each other.

FINAL REPORT

NOVA SEQUENCER PROJECT

CIA FILE «redacted»

SUMMARY

After deliberate exposure of sequencer materials to Subject W, Subject was successfully able to create the individual modules of an updated sequencer. Backdoor «redacted» into the HAL Jr. AI system bought by Subject W to interface all elements allowed complete monitoring of experimental use.

Subject W successfully exposed both himself and Subject J to sequencer-installed command sets. What appeared to be immediate conversion of Subject J to the command set was, however, later shown to be merely a temporary enhancement to elements already present in the Subject, such that the context alteration achieved was small. Data suggests the possibility that Subject J may have seen considerable, if temporary, libido enhancements, however these may have been the result of natural processes, and unrelated to sequencer operations.

The simultaneous exposure of both Subjects appears to have enhanced the bonding qualities of their subsequent carnal investigations, but again this may have been the result of natural processes. Determining whether or not this effect was caused by sequencer operations is beyond the scope of this Project. Further investigation must be funded, if such determinations are to be made.

The subsequent shared use of the sequencer, after the unexpected development of Subject W’s confession of its use to Subject J, was instructive as to how two people can use the technology together, to enhance their own lives, without needing the classic motivations for use of such technology, i.e., either subterfuge or revenge. The unusual bonding observed between the Subjects is speculated to be the cause of Subject W’s discomfort in having altered Subject J without her knowledge or consent, and subsequent confession. His own scrutiny into the matter revealed to the Project how little actual context change was achieved with Subject J, in spite of the fairly abrupt behavioral changes observed. This is currently thought to have been an effect of an unusual combination of factors, but the effects may be worthy of investigation in future studies.

The deliberate roll-off of all sequencer command sets 30 weeks after they were installed was observed to have no impact on subsequent behaviors of either Subject. Sequencer operations appear to have initiated an enhancement of pre-existing connections between the Subjects, but after a sufficient period, such connections had become strong enough that they were capable of operating independently of any sequencer command set presence. Even specific physical control cues remained active, after the roll-off of the command sets which had initiated them. This is a strong indication that all behavioral changes initiated by sequencer operations will tend to become permanent, as long as said behaviors are allowed self-reinforcement after initiation, and that removal of initiating command sets will not affect such reinforced behaviors.

Subject W’s use of sequencer capabilities to resolve a potentially threatening situation with Subject D had not been expected as part of this Project, but may provide keen insight into the Alpha Male Fallacy. Subject D, who is easily observed, with little additional Agency expense, while incarcerated, continues to exhibit extremely aggressive self-delusional beliefs, as enhanced by sequencer operations, even though they continue to result in moderate to severe beatings. It had previously been believed that sequencer alterations would be rejected, if the behaviors they led to were obviously not in the best interests of the Subject. However, Subject D continues to recklessly challenge everyone around him, seemingly in a delusion that everyone must obey him, and continues to receive what appear to be very painful injuries as a result. Again, further investigations must be funded, in order to determine why this Subject continues to adhere to command sets that are in conflict with his wellbeing.

Due to the unexpected pregnancy of Subject J, active investigations with her and Subject W have been terminated. The Subjects’ use of sequencer technology will be monitored, and if any further data is collected that warrants a re-opening of this file, or the funding of further research using these Subjects, an Addendum will be filed with the Director.
