Summary: An alien intelligence wants Earth females for zoological research, but they might be lacking some important understanding. Not that this is much comfort to the Earth females in question!

Chapter 3 — Reaction to Reprogramming

The girls had settled into something approaching a routine. The end of the “day” was marked by the glass in the living room going dark, then after a while the lights there dimming, with the bedroom following about an hour later; the sequence reversed in the morning. The two meals arrived during the “viewing time”, and were apparently quite a draw for the audience.

The little alien had apparently successfully understood Sofia’s request, and three rectangular frames had appeared on the wall in the living space one morning. They appeared blank initially, but when the empty space was tapped or stroked in various ways, it enabled drawing with a range of virtual tools. The color picker was interesting—there was one region where red faded to black, and another with a broad band of white. It had taken Maja a few hours to hypothesize that these were colors outside human visual range.

There was even the option, eventually discovered by Sofia, to capture the current image, store it in a shared gallery, and retrieve it. This generated a frenzy of new activity—all the girls started to write diaries, in addition to their art work.

It was, therefore, a surprise when the trio woke one morning to find that they were no longer in their usual positions. Instead of sprawling across the giant heart-shaped bed in a tangled mess of satin sheets and pillows, Sofia and Maja found themselves secured to tables in an ominous-looking laboratory. Looking around, they saw Frida sitting in a chair with a vacant look on her face. Small metallic buttons at the sides of her eyes, and behind her ears, rapidly blinked a complex and apparently every changing sequence of colored lights.

“Frida!” Maja tried to get her friend’s attention, but the girl continued to stare ahead blankly.

“Sof, are you awake?” Maja pulled against the restraints, but apparently whoever had applied them was fully aware of human strength, and how to resist it.

“I’m here, Maj.” There were grunts from Sofia’s direction as she too tested the straps, and found them more than adequate. “What’s up with Frida?”

“It’s like she’s disconnected from us,” Maja reported. She was closer to Frida, so had a better view. “Frida! Dammit.” She tried to look around the lab. “Is your friend around, Sof?”

“It’s been a couple days since we saw her,” Sofia said, a worried tone in her voice. “I don’t think she’d let anything really bad to us happen, though. As long as she knew about it...”

There was a high-pitched burst of music, and four aliens appeared out of nowhere. Ignoring the two restrained girls, they clustered around Frida, holding various small devices in their hands. Frida appeared as unaware of their presence as of the girls’.

“Can you see what they’re doing to her?” Sofia asked, frustrated.

“I can’t work it out,” said Maja, eventually. “They’re not actually touching her, as far as I can see. Hold on... it looks like they’re putting something on one of her fingers. It looks like a thimble, maybe? I have no idea what it is.”

The aliens chorused in apparent excitement, and moved over to the other side of the room, where they turned around and stared at Sofia and Maja, unblinking.

“I don’t like this,” Sofia muttered.

“Frida’s moving!” Maja said, suddenly. “But... I don’t think she’s there.”

Professor Mifa double-checked her signals, then gave a nod to Lati. “Disable the paralysis tone.”

Lati obediently pressed a couple of buttons on her control, and the small audio discs behind the seated woman’s ears started to flash a muted green color. The specimen stirred in her seat, causing a murmur from the other two assistants, but did not move from it.

“Set the first target,” Mifa ordered. “Start with the dark haired specimen.”

Lati flicked up a holographic display from her controller, representing the two bound women. She dexterously walked a cursor over the first one, then selected a highlighted nerve point.

Frida rose from her seat. The whiteness which had blanked out her vision had suddenly lifted, and she could see the laboratory in front of her. The slowly strobing cues in her vision showed her where to go, and she obediently followed them—the interface in her brain was ruthlessly filtering out any self-driven commands, leaving only instinctive reactions. She knew that the struggling, silently whimpering body in front of her was Maja, but the only thing that mattered was to follow the guidance. The slow pulses of pleasure that flowed though, and the gentle humming in her ears, held her in a state of bliss. As she moved her right hand towards the indicated area on Maja, the pleasuring gradually strengthened, and her vision started narrowing down until the hypnotically oscillating tunnel of circles lined up precisely on Maja’s right nipple. She slowly reached out with her right index finger, capped with the delicate silver mesh, and gently pressed onto it.

The silver mesh folded itself off Frida’s finger, enveloping Maja’s now-erect nipple; then, as Maja gazed fearfully at it, started to spread. Tiny silver tendrils grew out of the base of the mesh, spreading down Maja’s breast.

Frida had taken a step back from Maja, and was now gazing blankly again, but the flush coming to her ivory cheeks and the panting from her mouth showed her level of arousal. The pulses were now coming much stronger, not quite enough to take her over the edge, but she was unconsciously stroking herself and feeling her warm, damp response to the reward playing her nervous system.

“That was a very satisfactory demonstration,” Mifa announced, patting Lati on the shoulder. “Nearly full control over the specimen’s actions, incentivized by sexual stimulation, completing a realistic nanotech delivery. I don’t think we could have asked for more, from a first demonstration.”

“It did take a while to compile the guidance program,” one of the new assistants pointed out, “and we had full control and mapping of the environment. There’s a big gap between doing this here, versus in some stinking chaotic Terran environment.”

Mifa acknowledged the point. “Quite correct, and we still have a long way to go. But, we have proven the concept; now it’s just a matter of managing increased complexity.”

“What do you want us to do with the other specimen?” the other assistant asked, indicating a horrified Sofia whose eyes were fixed on the silver mesh spreading across her friend’s body.

“Let’s try an internal installation,” Mifa decided. “Lati, can you set it up?”

Lati pulled out her controller and rapidly tapped on its controls. The holograph view popped up, spun around, and the cursor was precisely positioned. The second assistant, meanwhile, cautiously approached the panting Frida, and slipped another silver thimble over her finger before rapidly retreating back to the group.

Lati completed her configuration, double-checked it, then hit a button and stood back to watch.

Frida moved around the tables to Sofia, and bent down between her friend’s spread legs. Her silver-capped finger slipped into Sofia’s slit, held there for a moment, then she retreated, her finger no longer covered, and moved back to her seat.

Sofia trembled, as she felt a tingling deep within her; it quickly spread out through her body and limbs, invisible, yet she could easily sense its remorseless extent. She gulped as she felt it pitter-patter up the inside of her neck, then there was a brief flash in her vision—and everything stopped.

“Visualize,” ordered Mifa, curtly.

Above each bound woman, a life-size image appeared—a complex mesh of white, blue, and pink lines forming a facsimile of the human. The one obvious anomaly was at the head, where a void was surrounded by a cat’s cradle of colored lines.

“Full mapping achieved,” confirmed one of the assistants. Mifa could never which was which.

Both women stared up at the image hovering above them, halfway between fascinated and terrified.

“That’s... us?” asked Maja, trying to make out the details above her. She flexed her right hand, and the corresponding part of the image moved simultaneously. “It’s like a live map of our bodies.”

“Except for our brains,” said Sofia, also absorbed in the detail of her image. “And, frankly, I’m quite happy with that omission. That mesh must be some kind of imaging system—and I guess it works inside as well as outside...”

“What have they done to Frida, though?” Maja asked, looking over at her blank-eyed friend. “It looks like they’ve taken complete control of her brain. Do you think they put something in her?”

“Maybe.” Sofia shivered in the restraints. “So, are they going to do the same to us?”

* * *

Professor Mifa was asking herself the same question. The neural interface installation on the first specimen had worked well, somewhat better than she had expected, and they had a good quality brain concept map for her.

Of course, every mind was different, even for these primitive animals, and it was tempting to repeat the process for the other two specimens to determine common areas and differences. However, she was acutely aware that these were the only three specimens to which she would have open access, at least for a long while.

“What are you thinking, Professor?” Lati was watching—with great interest—the specimens’ reactions to the images of their bodies. She had spotted the dark-hair’s test of the imaging, showing a level of reasoning and analysis that she hadn’t previously expected.

“We can’t remove any more specimens,” Mifa mused. “But... suppose, we didn’t remove them?”

“Professor speaks in riddles,” Lati complained.

“Professor says that we do a study in-place,” Mifa clarified. “What if we didn’t have to extract the wildlife—simply, hide in the local environment, and do our experiments from there?“

Lati paused, taking in the concept.

“We’ll need Terran experts. That, at least, is obvious. But... it’s obviously dangerous. What if they get detected? What if they get eaten?

“Well, we need to make sure that no-one would care. Find me the idiot hunters who made such a mess of capturing these three—did you read the internal report on the capture? It made me wonder which is the smarter species...”

Lati recalled the report, and winced as she watched the playback.

“I see what you mean.” She thought about the problem for a few seconds, which was practically forever. “We can borrow specimens, but we have to return them intact—or at least, in a condition where any change won’t be noticed, by them or their social group. We will need to be very careful about retrieving any tech that we implant. Wherever we establish our base of operations, we’ll need to be to well concealed—which means, we will need controlled human avatars to do most of our interfacing with the species.” She drummed her fingers on the table. “I think I know how we might do this. I’ll get you a plan by tomorrow.”

“Very good.” Mifa walked over to the tables and stared down at the two bound specimens. They stared back at her with their weird, darting, flexing multi-colored eyes. “Well, we’re going to have to return these two to the exhibit soon, so I might as well try out a direct brain connection before they go back.”

“Are you sure?” Lati peered at her boss, doubt written all over her face. “I know we obtained a lot of good data from the other specimen’s implant, so the overall picture should be comprehensible, but... even with the filters, is it wise to expose yourself so directly to the emotions of such a violent species?“

Mifa picked up a skeletal headpiece and made some adjustments. “I am sure that the conceptual load will be quite manageable.” She paused. “However, I would be foolish to ignore your counsel, Lati. Could you please ister the human dissociative drug to the blonde specimen? I’ll start with her.“

“Of course, Professor.” Lati retrieved a small tube from storage, using insulated tongs to avoid her fingers heating it beyond human body temperature. She dexterously inserted it into an injector, then located the pulsing major artery in the blonde’s neck, and pressed the injector against it.

“We should see effects shortly.” She moved back to the monitoring console, and ejected the spent tube into a disposal chute. “Thank goodness it’s so easy to synthesize. Though, I hear it took a lot of remote study before we figured out the common chemical basis to the huge range of socially consumed dissociatives...”

It had been about six months since Sofia had last been drunk out of her skull, but she still ed the feeling, and right now she seemed to be on ‘replay’.

Whatever had been pushed into her neck, although painless, had hit her like a hammer. Within a minute, her vision was doubling, and the whole room was spinning around quite alarmingly. Fortunately, she wasn’t feeling sick—unlike last time, when she had consumed far too much high-quality aquavit, then brought much of it back along with a half-digested Somali curry down the side of Maja’s Volvo—but she could disionately tell that she was as drunk as a pig.

“Nobody told me that aliens would get you drunk,” she slurred, vaguely aware of an alarmed Maja staring at her. “Lil’ bastards getting too forward. Waaaaay too forward... Gettin’ in my knickers!” She snickered. “Joke’s on them. No knickers!”

“Sof!” She could hear Maja, but it was as if she were far, far away. “What’s wrong?”

“Wrong?” She tried to gesture, but her hands didn’t move. “We’re kidnapped by aliens! What could poss-possibly-possibibbly be wronger?”

An alien started to fasten a framework around her head. She tried to focus her eyes on what was happening, but they just didn’t want to comply. It felt as if her eyes were looking in different directions.

“Oh my, I’m blasted,” she sighed, ive as the framework tightened onto her skull. “Just cut my damn head off. Save me from the hangover.” A thought occurred to her. “Give me one of those little alien heads! Much, much, much, much...”

Everything went white. Sofia thought, for a moment, that she might have died.

When she realized that time was still ing, and she was still thinking—albeit lopsidedly and badly—she decided to call out.

“Hello? Anyone here?” There was silence, but she could feel a very strange ‘thrum... thrum...’ underlying the whiteness.

There was a bolt of lightning, accompanied by a rapidly oscillating set of high pitched chords, and she felt as if her head were going to explode. “Stop! Stop! It’s too much.”

There was a pause, then the chords returned, but slower, and down at least two octaves; she could now start to tease apart some of the impossibly complex stream of sound. Her head still ached, but it was bearable.

“That’s.... better?” she offered, still peering into the whiteness.

Of all the possibly responses, she hadn’t anticipated a volcano of pleasure erupting inside her. Her whole body went rigid as she tried to ride the wave—the tsunami!—to climax.

Then... as suddenly as it had arrived, it was gone.

“No fair!” she complained. “Can’t leave me hanging like —”

Her voice cut off as she felt the Presence.

There was nobody visible, and no sound—not even the sound of Sofia breathing. Nevertheless, Sofia knew that Someone—Something?—was in here with her.

She rallied herself, the intoxication giving her false confidence. “Come out, come out, wherever you are...”

The whiteness in front of her shimmered into an electric blue, shaped like a narrow oval—but incredibly tall. Although she couldn’t move her ‘vision’, she sensed that it rose far, far above her. The hazy surface continually flashed in ever-changing patterns, faster than her eyes could follow.

She could feel it watching her, measuring her.

Another bolt of lightning hit her, this time jumping directly from the oval, and it was like she had wet her fingers and stuck them in an electrical outlet. She gave a strangulated scream, terrified that her heart was going to stop.

Mira tutted to herself as she rotated the image of the specimen’s brain interface in her own artificially-augmented vision. The technicians had done a frankly marvelous job of shrinking the headset bandwidth to a level that matched the human capabilities, but inevitably that left a much cruder interface than Mifa was used to using with her colleagues. And, of course, the junction points on the human did very different things.

Her first few explorations had generated large warning displays in the interface as the framework measured potentially dangerous levels of stimulation inside the specimen’s mind, and so she spent a while narrowing and de-amplifying the emitters of her own framework. A trial probe of the specimen’s sexual stimulation pathways—the only ones which she had confidence were mapped properly—had generated satisfactory results with the new settings, so she decided to try a connection to the cognitive section of the brain—tiny though it was.

The warning label appeared again, and she clicked in annoyance. Dropping the amplification by a factor of three, she tried again—a pure pulse of thought with no expressive frills—and was gratified that at least the warning no longer appeared.

“It’s like having to whisper in a study hall,” she thought to herself, annoyed.

Now, she started to fire more complex thoughts at the brain, flavoring them with emotion or combining primitives, watching carefully for how they propagated in the relatively simple brain map spread in front of her. She was glad for the disinhibition chemical; the propagation of thought was much clearer with it, though of course quite messy at the edges, and always so frustratingly slow.

After the electric shock had subsided, Sofia had taken a while to bring herself back on an even keel. It had felt as if her brain were going to explode—despite herself, she chuckled at the thought of the mess it would make in the little alien bastards’ hyper-clean laboratory. The headache that followed the initial assault was fortunately relatively mild, and faded quickly.

As she continued to stare at the electric blue Presence, another bolt of light erupted from the surface. Without even time to brace herself, she felt it hit—but instead of a body-wrenching shock, it was more like touching a farmer’s cattle fence. The mild shock caused her body to twitch, but no pain followed.

Now, the bolts came in a regular progression. They took on different colors, and as each one hit, Sofia felt it impact different places within her. A wave of dizziness spread from nowhere, followed by an equally inexplicable surge of joy. Several in a row made her pussy twitch in a mix of pleasure and confusion, then she felt tears well in her eyes, and shivers run up and down her body.

She was getting tired of being what felt like an emotional punch bag for this Presence, no matter how intimidating it might be, and the intoxication was making her bolder. It was, therefore, not surprising that, when a dark red, stinging bolt hit her, the mild anger emotion which it initially provoked suddenly cascaded into rage...

Lati, although mostly watching the monitors, was the first to notice the blonde’s hands curling into tight bony fists, her already pale skin turning pearl white as the muscles and tendons contracted. Almost simultaneously, her lips drew back from her teeth in a silent but terrifying snarl, that caused the two lab assistants to throw themselves away from the specimen tables.

“Professor...” Lati turned to Mifa, to see—with horror—that the Professor’s previously luminous blue eyes, whose perfect shape and sparkle had first attracted Lati to her academic mistress, were now purple, and edged with crimson. “Professor! Disconnect! GET OUT OF HER!”

Mifa barely ed the voice. She had seen her probe spread through the specimen’s mind, and at first everything had seemed to be normal. But then, the specimen’s primitive amygdala had lit up with warnings, and suddenly a full half of the creature’s brain seemed to be erupting. Alerts fired, advising her—much too late—that the baffles between the specimen’s mind and her own had overloaded, and quickly thereafter broken down entirely. She gasped as a firehose of red-hot primitive super-fury sprayed into her mind.

“Professor!” The framework was yanked from her head, scraping gashes in her skin that she didn’t even , and she was staring at Lati’s terrified face. A red haze covered her vision and, as she felt small hands on her shoulders, she batted them away with impossible strength, lunging for Lati’s face.

A sleep stick caught her in the neck mid-way, and she dropped to the lab floor like a bag of rocks.

Lati gently rubbed the side of her face, where Mifa had grabbed her before being ‘turned off’ by the stick, and took a moment to look at her unconscious, bleeding boss, before turning to the sheepish-looking lab assistant holding the sleep stick.

“I’m grateful for your intervention,” she said dryly, “but you do realize that the sticks were calibrated for these specimens?” To demonstrate, she grabbed the stick from the assistant’s unresisting hand, and stuck it on the neck of the snarling, drooling blonde. The human went out like a light. “I’d be surprised if the Professor wakes before tomorrow, even if you’ve somehow managed to avoid frying her brain.”

“What the... what did we just see?” the other assistant asked, in a horrified tone. “What happened to the Professor?”

“Looks to me as if the emotional baffles were much too small.” Lati shrugged her shoulders. “I’m sure that the inquiry will map out the details. But let this be a warning—never underestimate the human female capacity for violent thoughts.”

“Was it due to the dissociative drug, do you think?” The first assistant was still apparently paralyzed, so her companion walked over to the specimen table to examine the blonde. The dark haired specimen was growling loudly; she had no idea what it was trying to say, but was clearly unhappy with what had happened to its friend. Did they have friendships?

A sharp acid smell hit her nose, and the assistant peered down at the blonde’s middle with distaste. “Ugh. We’ll need a zoo handler—I think this one has leaked on the table.”

“No problem!” Lati said, cheerfully. “I know someone who’s about to scrub this lab and its specimens from top to bottom, by hand, and then have the draft report on this incident ready for me and the professorial committee to review by first thing tomorrow.” She nudged the immobile first assistant. “Does that sound like someone you know?“

Maja’s initial terror at Sofia’s brief transformation into a raging cavewoman had been overtaken by curiosity at the events in the lab. It seemed very clear that, whatever the aliens had been intending, something had gone very wrong. After the alien with the head apparatus had apparently gone nuts, and been knocked out, many more aliens had swarmed into the lab and filled it with high- pitched singing.

An alien had slowly worked its way over Maja from head to toe, including deep in all her creases, with something that reminded Maja of a Windex spray and chamois cloth. She had initially wondered if this was preparation for some kind of depraved experiment, but then she and similarly cleaned—but unconscious—Sofia and Frida were unceremoniously returned to their zoo enclosure.

She sighed, and dragged her friends one at a time into their private bedroom and onto the bed, thanking her recent exercise for the strength she needed to draw on. The aliens had removed their devices from Frida before returning her, and Maja couldn’t figure out why she was still asleep, but after checking both girls’ vitals to assure herself they were fundamentally okay, she went back to the living space to take a sauna. There was a lot to think about.
