The Mutual Hypnosis Study
By Mr Mutual
Synopsis: Two Ph.D. candidates volunteer for a mutual hypnosis study.
The psychology building at Westflank University was an unintended reflection of societal disfunction: a new section of glass s clashed with its traditional stone facade. The corridors of this hybrid structure were filled with careful footsteps and low voices. On the second floor, a notice was pinned on a bulletin board:
“Volunteers Needed: Study on Deep Mutual Hypnosis. Highly Susceptible Individuals Required. $500 Compensation Provided. Dr. Claudia Mercer.”
Susan Rhodes read the notice, adjusted her wire-rimmed glasses and tilted her head. She was a Ph.D. candidate in psychology, top of her cohort. Her focus had always been tightly wound: cognition, perception and language processing under altered states. She had long, straight black hair, a beautiful olive face and a voluptuous body that she did her best to hide. A personal life was a luxury she had shelved long ago.
Never having been hypnotized, Susan shuddered, thinking, “Hypnosis means relinquishing control.”
Nonetheless, something about the study piqued her interest. She could use the payment, but she was also curious about the process. She realized that hypnosis could be a useful experience for a psychology Ph.D., or maybe, just maybe, something deeper. She took a picture of the notice and volunteered.
Miles Everett read the same notice. He was also a doctoral candidate in psychology, tall and quiet, with a disarming presence and sharp blue eyes that rarely looked up from his computer. Although he had never been hypnotized, he studied dissociation and trance states and was fascinated by the malleability of consciousness. Relationships? No time. No energy. He had buried that side of himself beneath stacks of research articles and endless hours of coding data.
“Mutual hypnosis?” Miles thought apprehensively, “What if they uncover something I’ve buried?”. On the other hand, he realized that hypnosis might illuminate something his spreadsheets couldn’t and be a useful experience for a psychology Ph.D.
He signed up.
Two days later, Susan and Miles sat in the waiting room of Dr. Claudia Mercer’s office, where they sensed competing odors of bergamot and antiseptic. Dr. Mercer’s walls were lined with framed degrees—and a huge quotation:
“THE MIND IS ITS OWN PLACE, AND IN ITSELF CAN MAKE A HEAVEN OF HELL, OR A HELL OF HEAVEN.”—John Milton.
Susan and Miles glanced at each other politely but distantly with the neutral curiosity of strangers. They had never had an extended conversation, but they knew each other’s reputation as ambitious overachievers. Neither suspected how deeply their lives were about to intertwine.
Dr. Claudia Mercer was renowned in niche academic circles for her work on trance cognition and hypnotic empathy. Never married and eschewing intimate relationships, she was elegant and severe, like a woman carved from crystal. Her voice was normally stern and clipped but would become soothing and entrancing when she induced hypnosis.
Dr. Mercer had designed a novel experiment: deep mutual hypnosis between two subjects, their brainwaves synchronized, their subconscious minds intertwined. She welcomed both applicants with a firm handshake, had them sign release forms, and took them one at a time for susceptibility screening.
Both scored exceptionally high.
Perfect candidates.
The next day, Miles and Susan were led into an obscure back room with reclining chairs facing each other. The room was scrubbed clean, not just from dust but from personality. It was painted in neutral colors, with several video cameras and padded walls meant to dampen sound. It was a space built for controlling variables, not for comfort.
An assistant affixed EEG and EKG electrodes to their heads and bodies and covered their ears with headphones. The process was strangely intimate in a clinical way. Miles and Susan contemplated each other through the veil of dangling leads, with curiosity as well as amusement at how absurd they must look.
Dr. Mercer observed them from behind one-way glass. Her hypnotic induction flowed through their headphones:
“Today, Miles and Susan, you’ll use each other as your primary focus. We’ll guide both of you into a hypnotic trance and teach you how to do it yourselves at the next session. You’ll be prompted to share sensory imagery, combining your imagined environments into a single space. The rest will unfold naturally. Start by gazing into each other’s eyes.”
At first, it felt forced. Miles focused on the tiny reflections of the overhead lights in Susan’s pupils. Her eyes were an unreadable gray-brown, the kind that seemed to change shade with the light. He wondered if he had made a mistake by volunteering for the study.
“Focus on each other’s breathing,” Dr. Mercer continued. “Let your own breathing settle into the same rhythm. Let your blinks happen together… as if the two of you are simply one system, relaxing.”
Something subtle shifted. Miles’ own breathing began to match Susan’s. Her pupils dilated slightly, with the muscles at the corners of her eyes softening. The hum of the equipment receded.
“With each breath, feel your attention narrowing,” Dr. Mercer continued, “until the only thing in focus is each other’s eyes… their steady gaze into each other… generating warmth in the space between you. Feel your muscles relax. Breathe deeply and feel yourselves relax more and more with every breath you take. Your eyelids are becoming heavy, and you will soon have to close them. You are falling into a pleasurable hypnotic trance.”
Dr. Mercer was an experienced hypnotist, and as she continued her inductions, Miles and Susan felt themselves drifting into a hypnotic trance in spite their instincts to keep in control.
“You are falling deeper and deeper,” Dr. Mercer intoned. “Deeper and deeper with every breath you take. Concentrate only on your breathing, on each other’s eyes, and on my voice.”
Susan felt her bones liquefying as she sank into her hypnotic trance. A feeble thought attempted to emerge from her critical mind: “This is a silly…”
Susan’s mind then dissolved like sugar in tea. Her eyes closed involuntarily, and she entered a hypnotic trance, which she found surprisingly pleasurable.
Miles’ final attempt at normal thought was as tenuous as a bursting bubble: “I need to check that spreadsheet for errors…” And then his eyes also closed involuntarily, and he entered a hypnotic trance with a pleasurable sigh of surrender.
Dr. Mercer concluded with a deepening sequence: “You are both now deeply hypnotized, but I am going to take you even deeper. I am going to count down from ten to one. You will fall even deeper with each number. When I reach one, you will feel you are asleep and awake at the same time. You will both be in a deeper hypnotic trance than you could ever have imagined. Focus on my count. Ten... sinking... nine... deeper...”
As Dr. Mercer completed her countdown, Miles and Susan descended into a deeper hypnotic trance than they ever could have imagined.
“Now,” Dr. Mercer intoned, “visualize a golden cord connecting you.”
A golden umbilical cord materialized and connected them together at their belly buttons. Susan gasped, and she sensed Miles’ astonishment vibrating through the cord.
“You are able to speak aloud,” Dr. Mercer affirmed. “Describe what you experience.”
“Warmth,” Miles murmured. “Connection.”
“Like... electricity flowing back and forth between us,” Susan added. “Connection.”
Dr. Mercer wrote in her notes: “Excellent somatic overlap.”
“A scene is emerging behind your eyelids,” continued Dr. Mercer. “Describe what you see.”
“I’m on a gravel path,” Miles said without thinking. “Somewhere warm. The sun’s low. I can hear cicadas.”
Susan’s voice was slower, almost tentative. “I’m in an old library… Afternoon light streams through tall windows… Dust dances in the air… like gold.”
Dr. Mercer continued: “Let those places blend. Find each other there.”
Miles pictured himself walking along the gravel path, turning a corner, and there was the library, sitting impossibly at the edge of the field. He described pushing open the door. Susan took over, describing him stepping inside, and the way the boards creaked under their shared weight.
The air felt warm and heavy, with the faint tang of old paper. And when Susan described standing beside Miles at one of the long wooden tables, he could feel the warmth of her presence.
They traded details like brushstrokes: the smooth coolness of the tabletop beneath their palms, the ticking of a far-off clock… Miles’ voice was soothing and trancey, and Susan’s soft, friendly voice seemed to draw closer to his ear, even though they hadn’t moved in their chairs.
“I’m walking with you between the shelves,” Miles continued. “The floorboards give just a little under our steps. There’s a shaft of sunlight across the carpet, right where it’s worn thin.
Susan’s reply was also trancey but wrapped in warmth: “I’m looking up at you, and you’ve stopped walking. Your hand is resting on the edge of the shelf, and you’re smiling. Your smile makes me… happy.”
The hum of the machines in the lab was gone from their awareness. Dr. Mercer’s voice had faded into the background. There was only the two of them, feeding their images back and forth, each word confirming the reality of their shared mental space.
“I reach out,” Miles said, “and remove a book. Dust drifts between us. I hand the book to you.”
Susan’s breathing deepened. “Your fingers brush mine. Just a little. And it feels like the air is different here: comforting.”
In the control room, the EEG traces began to converge more tightly, the oscillations locked into the same rhythm. Their hearts were beating together.
Susan’s eyes moved faintly beneath her closed lids. “We walk toward the windows. The sun is lower now. The light catches in your hair. You are beautiful.”
“You are beautiful, too, Susan.”
One of the technicians glanced at Dr. Mercer, who frowned but said nothing.
Miles didn’t think about the fact that Susan wasn’t seeing him in the real world. Their shared hallucination was vivid enough to by logic.
Dr. Mercer continued their sessions, guiding them through various shared scenarios and teaching them how to hypnotize each other simultaneously. Dr. Mercer encouraged them to use their mutual trance to learn about each other, but she forbade them to express any sexual attraction or physical .
Miles and Susan grew more intimate with each session as they got to know each other’s proclivities and desires. Their deep hypnotic trances broke through long-held repressions. They shared their past successes and failures, fears and discoveries. Susan showed Miles scenes of her childhood: a lonely girl buried in books, the sting of academic rivalry, the ache of never quite fitting in. Miles let her see his own past: the pressure of being the “golden boy” of his department, the exhaustion of perpetual overwork.
They savored their increased intimacy as their repressions crumbled and they opened up to each other, which they had never experienced with anyone else. They began to invent their own scenarios. They would offer a word or two, back and forth, which they developed into complex hallucinations.
By the third session, Dr. Mercer noticed that her subjects responded more to each other than to her cues. They went deeper, faster, when guiding each other. Her scripts were becoming irrelevant. Susan and Miles ignored her corrections and instead followed each other’s cues. They developed their own rituals: mirroring each other’s expressions, whispering together with phrases that weren’t in Mercer’s material.
Dr. Mercer intervened: “Please stick to the structured induction.”
But they didn’t.
At the fifth season, they gazed expectantly into each other’s eyes, synchronized their breaths, and something deep inside them began to dissolve. Miles’ eyes were welcoming pools of blue, and Susan’s thoughts seemed to wrap around him like a cozy blanket. Their voices were gentle but intoxicating. They hypnotized themselves instantly with a trigger word.
“Our bodies are warm, heavy,” Miles decreed.
“Our thoughts float like clouds,” replied Susan.
“We are safe, calm, connected, deep in our beautiful trance together,” continued Miles.
In their shared hypnosis, Miles reached for Susan’s hand.
In the real world, their fingers twitched toward each other, as if seeking .
Their minds folded into one another, and Dr. Mercer’s voice became noise. Their eyes closed as they explored their shared experience with each other (and inadvertently with Dr. Mercer). Exchanging a word or two, they were no longer in the lab. They were in a vibrant, mythic, dreamlike garden. Marble fountains and lush flowers radiated impossible color. They rolled in dew-slick grass together, laughing happily, with their trance-bodies clothed in golden light.
In the lab, the EEG monitors went wild, their neural patterns intertwining in ways the equipment couldn’t fully map. An alarm blinked on the operator’s : an out-of-range coupling index.
Dr. Mercer tried to interrupt. “Separate from each other!”
They didn’t even hear her.
Instead, in their shared hallucination, Susan and Miles embraced ionately, and their lips ed in a deep, sensuous kiss.
Dr. Mercer slammed her hand on the console. “Terminate NOW!”
Dr. Mercer’s assistants snapped them out forcefully.
Miles jolted upright, eyes wide, blinking.
Susan gasped, clutching the chair’s armrest.
Dr. Mercer’s face was rigid with alarm. “This study is over.”
“But…” Susan started.
“No. I’m terminating it. Effective immediately.”
“Why?” Miles asked.
“I’ve lost control of the study. There are serious ethical implications. You may not realize the psychological danger you’re in. I’m protecting you both.”
“How is our attraction a danger?” protested Susan.
“That’s not what hypnosis is for!” Dr. Mercer decreed. “You are not yourselves!”
“I’ve never felt more like myself,” countered Miles.
“Hypnosis prevented my inhibitions from concealing my true self,” added Susan.
“This is totally unacceptable!” Dr. Mercer shouted. “You don’t realize the implications. Outsiders have been looking for an excuse to use something like this to destroy Westflank University’s academic freedom, to control Westflank with their own agenda. The media will also be eager to promote a scandal. Imagine the headlines: ‘WESTFLANK UNIVERSITY HYPNOTIZES STUDENTS TO HAVE SEX!’ No! This study is over. You have both signed nondisclosure agreements, and you should have no further with each other!”
Miles and Susan left the lab in silence, but with a meaningful glance at each other. Outside, the evening had deepened into a velvet dusk. A fine mist of rain fell, catching the amber glow of streetlights. The campus was nearly empty, and the air was rich with the scent of wet leaves.
Miles’ voice was gentle. “Would you… like to come to my apartment? It’s not far.”
Susan’s answer came as easily as her breath. “Yes. I would.”
They walked to Miles’ apartment with their hands linked and the world hushed around them. Every brush of their fingertips sent little currents of warmth through their arms, rippling through the rest of their bodies, confirming their bond.
They felt like they were in another kind of trance, a trance of mutual connection and love. Their steps became synchronized. They seemed to float along the path together with their world softened into a beautiful dream.
Miles’ apartment was warm and inviting. Books lined his shelves. Soft lamplight spilled across comfortable furniture. His cat honored them with a welcoming purr as it brushed against their legs.
They stood facing each other. The air between them thickened, electric but tender.
“I want to go under with you again,” Susan confirmed. “Before I do, I want to clearly state that I consent to our making love together, in a deep hypnotic trance, if it takes us there. Being in a hypnotic trance with you has liberated my true self that I hid for so long. And I’ve started birth control.”
Miles had never experienced such candor from a woman. He almost choked, but he managed to croak a single word that he hoped would constitute an adequate response: “Absolutely!”
Susan smiled affectionately, stroked Miles’ cheek, and he relaxed.
They began their induction. They were now adept at hypnotizing themselves instantly with a trigger word, but for this first time by themselves they wanted to savor the process with a long, slow glide.
They inhaled together, with one long, deliberate breath, and exhaled through parted lips. Their world began to flutter like silk drifting through water.
Miles focused on her voice, soft but steady, the way it vibrated slightly in her chest. Susan focused on his eyes, watching his pupils slowly dilate, drawing her in as their breathing synchronized. The subtle shimmer of trance began as Susan felt a tingling warmth in her chest. The room softened into a blur; only his face remained sharp in her vision.
“We are falling deeply together,” Susan sighed blissfully.
Susan’s chest rose and fell in perfect rhythm with Miles’. Her lips parted sensually as a flush of heat in her chest spread into her face. She felt that she was floating on gentle waves of anticipation and surrender.
They were hypnotizing each other. Slowly. Layer by layer.
Susan felt herself becoming sexually aroused as the warmth in her chest and face spread down between her legs. Her pleasure was not overly erotic at first; it was more sensual and deeply intimate. But the connection between them was no longer just psychological: it was also physical, cellular, and elemental.
Susan observed a similar flush on Miles’s cheeks. His lips were sensual and inviting, and his eyes had become glassy. Their deepening trance was binding them together like two intertwining vines.
Their bodies swayed as they drifted with their gentle hypnotic current. Susan felt herself melting, surrendering. She felt no fear, only a growing sweetness, intoxicated by trust and desire.
The outside world vanished. Without the electrodes, without the lab, alone together, they were falling into an even deeper hypnotic trance than before.
Susan’s arousal kept increasing, and she pressed her thighs together. She loved the way that Miles’s eyelids fluttered uncontrollably. She adored watching his face as it was increasingly consumed with pleasure. His pleasure fed hers, and vice versa in a loop of shared sensation and arousal.
They had practiced communicating and using hypnotic commands while they were entranced during the Mutual Hypnosis Study. “Deeper together,” Miles now commanded.
Susan commanded in turn: “Let our sensations, our pleasure, increase exponentially.”
Their shared trance enveloped them, and with it, their intimacy. They felt irresistible lust for each other, but it was not just a physical craving. They were overwhelmed by a profound emotional and sensual merging.
“We are intensely attracted to each other, intensely aroused by each other,” Susan sighed dreamily.
“Our feelings are real,” Miles acknowledged. “But hypnosis can increase our arousal and attraction even further. Let hypnosis intensify our attraction, our arousal, our intimacy, with every breath we take. Let hypnosis intensity what is already within us.”
“We are about to make love,” Susan decreed, “and it will be the most intense, most pleasurable lovemaking that we have ever known. But we will only be able to climax simultaneously. We will hold out for as long as we can, but when one of us must climax, the other will climax as well, and we will then be consumed by the most intense and most pleasurable orgasm of our lives.”
The intensity of her anticipation weakened Susan’s legs. As she started to crumble, Miles’s slid his arms around her to anchor her, and she melted into him.
Further delay was inconceivable. They tore off each other’s clothes. They worshipped each other’s naked bodies for an instant before they tumbled into Miles’ bed and merged their lips and tongues. They were even more intoxicated by inhaling each other’s breaths. Their hands explored each other’s bodies. Their fingers enflamed each other’s erogenous zones.
Susan murmured dreamily but insistently, “I want you in me.”
Miles entered Susan, and they floated away in a swirling fusion of love and sensation. What was inherent within them was supercharged by their hypnotic commands. Miles and Susan had never experienced such intense pleasure, love and connection.
When they could hold out no longer, an intense wave of ultimate pleasure and sensation consumed them with the most intense and most pleasurable orgasms of their lives. Explosions of pleasure obliterated thought, obliterated individuality, leaving only unadulterated bliss.
They floated in this sea of bliss for an indeterminate time. Seconds? Minutes? Hours?
When normal consciousness finally returned:
“I love you, Susan.”
“I love you, Miles.”
In the months that followed, Susan and Miles were together almost every day. They made love in deep mutual trances. They made love without a trance.
They used mutual hypnosis for adventures that felt real, even though they knew that they were hallucinations.
In one trance, they stood on a mountaintop, above the clouds, with sunlight pouring through them like fire through stained glass. They danced barefoot on snow that didn’t burn, wrapped in golden robes that shimmered with their breath.
In another, they explored an ancient forest of glowing trees, where each leaf whispered secrets. They found a clearing where light streamed down in ribbons. There, beneath trees that sang with the wind, they lay together, pressing their bodies into each other, their lips meeting in a kiss that shook the ground.
In another, in a garden walled by silver vines, they encountered each other naked beneath falling petals, with each holding a guitar. They composed a lusty, romantic love song, trading silly lines. They laughed uncontrollably as they performed their creation.
They became artists in a Parisian loft where they painted each other’s naked bodies.
On the surface of Europa, they made love in a pressurized dome as Jupiter loomed.
They transported themselves to a Victorian palace where Miles slowly undid Susan’s corset with his teeth.
They discovered that an intimate relationship was no bar to pursuing academic success. Miles and Susan started writing separate but secretly coordinated Ph.D. dissertations. Susan focused on intimacy in altered states. Miles focused on identity merger through trance. They drew on published data, their own theoretical framing and metaphors, as well as on their own experiences. Both dissertations were a tribute to mutual love accentuated by hypnosis.
Of course, the outside world remained. Westflank’s psychology department was small. Rumors spread like wildfire. Whispers began: why had Dr. Mercer’s study ended so abruptly? Why were Susan and Miles always together?
Dr. Mercer remained silent, but her silence was barbed. She avoided eye in the corridors. She retracted her draft paper with its preliminary results. Her office door stayed closed.
Susan and Miles, once ultra-private academics, were now two students with visible, undeniable chemistry. They began finishing each other’s sentences, sitting close in meetings, disappearing together during breaks. Their peers noticed.
Dr. Mercer never spoke to them again, but at one faculty luncheon, Professor Sanders pulled Miles aside.
“I heard you and Susan were subjects in Mercer’s study,” he said lightly. “Careful with that. Hypnosis can do strange things. People get... attached.”
Miles smiled knowingly. “What’s wrong with attachments, Professor, with or without hypnosis?”
Sometime later, Professor Kettering pulled Susan and Miles aside: “Hypnosis is dangerous and could cause—”
“—bliss?” Susan interrupted.
Kettering paled. “You’re playing with forces you don’t—”
“We’re in love,” Miles said simply.
Professor Kettering recoiled. “That’s not what hypnosis is for!”
But in the end, the faculty realized that the university was better off if they pretended that nothing was amiss, that the mutual hypnosis study had never happened, and that Miles and Susan’s relationship had developed in a traditional way.
Susan and Miles were awarded their doctorates with honors, and they went on to live in a house by the sea near San Francisco. They established a successful hypnotherapy practice, specializing in using mutual hypnosis to treat couples. But they never stopped hypnotizing each other.
Sometimes in the quiet hour before sleep, Miles would say, “Shall we?”
And Susan would smile, take his hand, and reply, “Take me under with you.”
And they would fall into a deep mutual trance—into a beautiful garden, floating in fluffy clouds, or naked on a deserted breach—on and on together...
