“What is the difference between a want and a need?” The Queen reflected. “You know what I think the difference is? A want is something you choose to have. A need is something you have no choice to have. It all really comes down to the presence or absence of the choice.”
The Queen picked up one of the instruments lying on the small tray table, and examined it closely. “This will work quite nicely. Now please bring me the button.”
“Yes my Queen.” The collective responded.
Turning back to the prepared recruit laying on the larger table, the Queen continued the lesson. “One must be careful when choosing a want. If chosen too much, soon it will turn into a need. Now hold still, you’ll barely feel it when I insert this probe in the base of your skull.”
The Queen picked up the scalpel from the tray table and made an incision at the base of the recruits skull. She laid the scalpel down. With a pair of tweezers she picked up the tiny probe. “Now once I insert the probe, It will find its way to the happy place in your brain. And you don’t need to do anything at all. It will all only take a few minutes.”
“Who is she, is that me?” Ariel asked.
“It’s seems logical, the woman is you, don’t you think? The mirror does show your truth, past, present and future.” The Queen explained.
“What is that probe going to do?” Ariel asked with a tone of concern.
“Oh, just begin a chain reaction towards an addiction in order to create a need.” The Queen purred.
Ariel opened her eyes, and noticed Jess wasn’t in bed with her. She stretched her arms and smiled. “I’m pretty lucky to have a girlfriend who always has coffee ready for me every morning when I wake up.”
Ariel walked into the dining room, but Jess wasn’t there. Just a note on the table:
Good morning Love, need to go to the market, we’re all out of coffee. I’ll try to get back before you get up, but just in case. I love you, Jess
“Hmm, didn’t I buy coffee just yesterday?” Ariel decided to go take a quick shower, expecting Jess would be back when she got out.
When she finished her shower she could smell coffee brewing in the kitchen. She wrapped herself in a towel and headed towards the dining room. She found Jess, putting away some dishes. Which gave Ariel the opportuitity to surprise her girlfriend. She tiptoed over and hugged Jess from behind.
“Well good morning Ariel, this was a nice surprise.” Jess turned around to give Ariel a kiss.
“I thought I bought coffee yesterday, didn’t I?” Ariel asked with a puzzled look on her fact.
“Ummm no, I don’t think so love. Don’t you last night after I made you cum I told you we were out of coffee and I told you I would get some this morning before you got up.” Jess poured coffee into both their cups. And each took a seat at the table.
“I had another dream last night.” Ariel started.
“You’re having dreams now? What was the dream about?” Jess asked leaning in hoping the dream was about her.
“Oh nothing really, I mostly forgot.” Ariel decided it best to drop it.
“You sure seem to be getting forgetful lately. Maybe too much sex is effecting your memory. I suppose that can happen after almost a year of fucking like rabbits.” Jess flashed a suggestive smile.
A year? We only started sleeping together a few days ago. Ariel kept the thought in her mind. “Yeah maybe you’re right I suppose, I never forget how much I love you though.”
“You better never forget!” Jess teased. “So how’s your story going?”
“Story?” Ariel remarked with a look of confusion.
“You’re a lost cause Ariel.” They both laughed.
The Queen handed the woman lying on the table a small lavender box with a turquoise button on top. “This is your choice. You may choose to press the button or you may choose to hand it back to me. I advise you to make your choice wisely.”
The woman looked at the box with the turquoise button in her hand took a breath and pressed the button.
When she pressed the button, she did didn’t arch her back, her toes didn’t curl, she didn’t even scream. What she did do; she melted into a puddle of pure molten unadulterated orbit of Jupiter. None of her nerve endings tingled, her nerve endings all sang to the angels in a prayer to the devil. She didn’t just have an orgasm she experienced the Big Bang. When she regained her human form, the Queen asked, “Would you like to do that again?”
The woman’s vocal cords were still in liquid form, all she could do was nod. The Queen nodded back, and the button was pressed a second time with the same results. “Be careful with that, you might grow to need it.” The Queen let out a slight giggle as she walked away.
“What did you do to her?” Ariel asked.
“Oh nothing much, just set her on the path of obedience. You wish that’s you, don’t you? Picture yourself addicted to obedience, taking your place as collective. The question is; Is the mirror showing your past or is the mirror showing you your future.” The Queen smiled.
Jess came into their living room and found Ariel on the couch doing some reading. “Honey, I feeling a little lonely tonight, you’ve been so busy working on your secret project. I was just wondering if we could just spend some time snuggling together.”
“Of course my love.” Ariel stood up to give Jess a warm loving hug. I’ll take the night and see if I can cure your loneliness. We could watch a movie on Tubi if you like.”
“That sounds like a great idea,” Jess replied as they sat back down on the couch. “There is a movie I have been wanting to see, called Happy Ending. It’s about an older woman who’s straight but she wants to experience having sex with another woman. So she seeks out the services of a high priced call girl. Kind of like a mid life crisis I suppose. It’s received some high ratings on Tubi, so it’s probably a good one.”
They watched the movie. Despite the title they both cried at the end. “Wow that was such a great movie, great choice Jess.”
“Let’s take this to bed.” Jess winked.
The woman laid on the table, with button in hand. She had discovered if she pressed the button multiple times in a quick succession, the sensations she felt were even more powerful. She was now up to five, rapid fire, button presses, just to make it feel like a regular orgasm. As hard as she tried, she couldn’t go any longer than maybe two hours without feeling the need to press the button.
Ariel watched the scene playing out in the mirror. The woman pressed the button five times. Then she immediately pressed it five more times. Then she pressed it ten. It wasn’t working anymore.
“This is just a demonstration my lovely. You see I can turn it off, and I can turn it on. Obedience results in the button being turned on. Disobedience… well… it feels like torture doesn’t it? You see, I don’t need whips and chains in order to break you. You’ve done it all to yourself. I told you at the beginning to choose wisely. So you’ve done this all to yourself.” The Queen smiled at the woman, now officially the collective.
“Are you feeling a little uncomfortable? You sure would like that button to work, wouldn’t you? Well I do have a special project for you in mind to test your obedience. It’s something you would never dream of doing on your own. Would you like to know what I have in mind?”
The woman wimpered.
Jess was out doing some shopping. Her and Ariel’s wedding anniversary was coming up and was looking for a gift for her wife.
“Hey Jess!” Jess turned in the direction of a familiar voice calling her name.
“Alice how are you, haven’t seen you in, what’s it been? six years, at the..”
“Christmas party” Alice completed. “I’m doing pretty well my daughter started school in August. I’m between jobs right now, but I have a few interviews lined up. One of them looks promising.”
“That’s great about your daughter, starting school. Good luck on your interview, I hope you get the job. Are you still doing some writing?” Jess asked.
“Thanks. As far as writing, I haven’t done any for almost a year now. I hope to get back to it some day though. I heard that you and Ariel are a couple now. The two of you have been friends for as long as I can . I never thought you were in a romantic relationship.” Alice smiled
“We are, and we’ve never been so happy. We got married and our anniversary is coming up, five years, I’m actually out shopping for her gift.” Jess beamed.
Hey have you heard about that woman who is missing?” Alice asked with a look of sadness on her face.
“No I haven’t heard, I don’t pay all that much attention to the news anymore. Gets kind of depressing these days.” Jess replied in a tone of indifference.
“Yeah well, she told her sister that she had to pick up something from the market and would be a few minutes late to her sister’s birthday party. She never made it to the party and no one has seen or heard from her since. The police have no credible leads to go on. It’s like she just simply disappeared.” Alice shook her head in a sign of despair.
“Well, people need to be careful these days. It was really nice to see you again Alice.” Jess turned and walked away.
Alice wondered how Jess could appear so insensitive. Seemed she was not the woman she used to know.
”Your assignment is actually very simple.” The Queen held up a bottle of tablets. “All you need to do is slip one of these in her coffee. They dissolve quick and they are tasteless. She will never know. As long as you obey every day, the button will work. If you disobey, the button stops working. I’m certain you won’t even think of disobeying, will you?
The woman, shook her head.
“That’s Jess!” Ariel exclaimed. “Does that mean she has been drugging me, or will be drugging me?”
“Don’t worry.” The Queen smirked. “The drug is mostly harmless. It will just alter your perception of reality, provide you with a vivid dreamscape and make you more compliant. You’ll most likely enjoy it.
Ariel opened her eyes. The sun was shining through the window. Jess was still sleeping. She didn’t want to wake her, she didn’t want to get out of bed just yet either. So she scooted over up against her wife’s back for soft cuddle time. It felt a little like she may have been dreaming, though she couldn’t the dream if she had one. So she allowed the thought to float from her mind. Today was their fifth wedding anniversary and she had never felt happier.
She had a little more work to do on the gift she planned to give Jess for their anniversary. It was something she created herself and she felt that would make her gift more meaningful. It took her longer than she expected it would take. She hoped Jess would still appreciate the gesture and the work she put into it even though it wasn’t in the form she had hoped to be able to present it.
Ariel was in her home office. The room that used to be her bedroom. She was just printing out the final pages of her manuscript, the story she had written for Jess as her anniversary present. Once the last page was printed. She bound it in a cover. Her initial plan was to get it all professionally printed and bound. Though she had just finished final proof reading a few days ago. Getting it printed and bound would take three weeks. She could do that later.
Ariel didn’t get Jess a card, she did however write Jess a message on the cover page. She felt that would be more meaningful:
Happy Anniversary Jess! It’s been five years already I can barely believe how fast the time has flown by. My life is living my dream, sharing it with you. You seemed to enjoy the book I got you for Christmas last year, the collection of short stories by best selling author Fembot Heather. I enjoyed the book too. So I wrote this story using some of her themes, which I felt you might enjoy. I hope you would especially enjoy that I wrote it for you. I love you with all my heart. Ariel.
Jess got up and went looking for Ariel, it was rare her wife got up before she did. She found her in their home office.
“Good morning Jess, Happy Anniversary!” Ariel smiled from ear to ear.
“Thank you sweetheart! Happy Anniversary!” Jess ran up and hugged her in a warm loving embrace.
“I got you something, actually I made it, or wrote it. It’s a story inspired by that collection of short stories I got you for Christmas. Here open it up, read what I wrote to you.” Ariel handed Jess the printed story.
“Ah that’s so sweet, I love you so much too! I also got you something. Let me make some coffee and meet me in the dining room.” Jess said lovingly.
Ariel walked into the dining room. There was a small wrapped package with a card. Jess came out from the kitchen and set their coffee cups on the table. “Go ahead open it, I hope you like it.”
Ariel read Jess’s card first, it was also in the form of a hand written note:
Happy Anniversary Ariel! In a perfect life, in a perfect world, I would spend my life with you. Thank you for making my world perfect. I love you so much! Jess
“Thank you Jess!” Ariel smiled
“Well go ahead open your gift, I’m dying to see what you think!” Jess encouraged.
Ariel carefully removed the wrapping. They didn’t have a lot of money, and things like wrapping paper could be reused. The wrapping was hiding a box. Ariel was thinking jewelry. Though when she opened the cardboard box, there was a rectangle object inside.
“Oh this is pretty, I love the color. What is the button for?
