Chapter 5: The Gate Closes

The van slowed.

The smooth asphalt gave way to the crunch of gravel, then the uneven rumble of a dirt road. Thick trees pressed close on both sides, their branches interlocking overhead and blocking out the bright midday sun, leaving the path in a dim, greenish twilight. The sudden quiet was oppressive — no traffic, no birds, only the crunch of tires on stone and the low growl of the engine.

Charles pressed a button on the visor. Ahead, a heavy automatic gate slid open with a low mechanical hum. The van rolled through, and Charles pressed the button again. The gate closed silently behind them, sealing off the outside world.

They were being taken deep into the private family estate that Charles and Camilla had inherited — the same vast, secluded property they rarely lived on. This place was reserved for their hunting.

The realization landed like a fist in the gut. No houses. No streetlights. No other cars. No one was coming.

Marcus is waiting at home, Elena thought, panic clawing at her chest. He’ll never find us here.

Sophia’s heart hammered wildly. Mom… I’m so sorry I talked in the van… this is my fault…

Their final desperate pleas burst out at the same time.

Elena’s voice cracked with raw maternal terror. “Please… please let us go. We won’t tell anyone. We have money — we can give you whatever you want. Just let us go home to our family.”

Sophia sobbed beside her, words tumbling over her mother’s. “I’m begging you — we’re good people. My dad is waiting for us. Please don’t do this. We’ll do anything. Anything at all!”

From the front seats, Charles and Camilla answered with the same calm, almost soothing voices, as if reassuring frightened children rather than two women they intended to destroy.

“You’re doing so well,” Camilla murmured gently, eyes fixed on the winding road ahead. “Just a little longer now.”

Charles leaned back slightly, his tone warm and reassuring. “Everything is going exactly as it should. There’s no need to be afraid. We’re almost there.”

The van rolled to a stop deep in the woods, directly in front of the large, secluded estate. Charles cut the engine with a soft, final click.

For a moment there was near-total silence — heavy and absolute. Then the hot engine began to make soft, metallic pinging sounds as it cooled, the tiny ticks echoing unnaturally loud in the stillness.

The only other sounds were the women’s ragged, terrified breathing.

For a long moment, no one moved.

Then Charles stepped out of the enger side. A second later, Camilla climbed out from the driver’s seat, walking around to him at the open sliding door. They stood side by side — calm, synchronized, almost casual — looking in at their captives with bright, anticipatory eyes.

“The fun begins now,” Charles said quietly, a faint, mocking smile touching his lips.

Warm midday air rushed into the van, carrying the sharp scent of pine and sun-baked earth.

He leaned forward, his voice low and steady. “Listen carefully. If either of you screams or tries to run, I will hurt the other one while you watch. Do you understand?”

Both women nodded frantically, tears streaming down their faces.

Charles stepped out first. “Come on. Get out slowly. I’ll help you so you don’t fall.”

He reached in and assisted Elena first, steadying her as she stumbled on bound wrists and weak legs. Then he did the same for Sophia, his grip firm but not rough. Sophia’s polo shirt and bra remained bunched up behind her neck, her bare breasts fully exposed to the bright midday sun. Once both women were standing on the gravel, he nodded toward the narrow path.

“Follow me. Stay quiet.”
