Part One
Philadelphia (Nineteen Years Ago)
Peter could barely hear the girls over the sound of the booming dance beats. The Club did not have many people, which Peter was glad for. He didn’t like crowds.
He was only here because of Maria.
Maria Lucia Cucinotta. The twenty-two-year-old co-worker with huge, friendly brown eyes was something to behold. She had a pretty face. She had brown hair in a short bob. With her thin, petite frame, she would have been described as a flapper in another era.
There was a rumor that she got the job because of family connections. And by family, that is in the Sicilian meaning. She was secretary to the manager Carlo Alamonti.
Peter Aaldenberg was of Dutch origin. He didn’t vote. He was not religious. Non-descript. He was twenty-seven and a deputy manager in the plant where they all worked.
Then there was Helen Brady, also a twenty-two-year-old. Helen was interested in Peter, but only to add another notch to her bedpost. She had a body count of thirty, and she was looking to experience more. She loved to fuck. But she was never emotionally attached to her lovers. It was just sex. She needed the joy it brought her… albeit fleeting.
She opened another button on her top to give Peter a better view of her small but firm breasts.
“What was that you said?” Helen asked him above the din.
“I said,” Peter shouted, “I have a very rare blood condition…,”
“Oh?” she said, a little disappointed. When she had asked him to describe something unusual about him she was hoping to hear he had a massive dick, or that he once fucked for four hours straight. That was the kind of light banter she was interested in.
He felt a nudge.
He turned to see a woman there at the bar smiling at him. “Hello,” she smiled.
“Um, hello,” he said.
She had long blonde hair, a set of massive breasts barely contained in what looked more like black lace lingerie than a dress. She wore a thick black choker, hanging a small medallion. And her eyes… He rubbed his eyes as he could have sworn that for a moment, they appeared red.
“I’m Lilith,” she smiled, “But please… Call me Lil,” She offered him her hand.
“Ah… I’m Pete… Pete Aaldenberg,” he said, taking her hand.
He was surprised at how cool her hand was.
“Spreek je Nederlands?” she asked.
“You speak Dutch?” he smiled.
“Niet veel,” she smiled.
“I don’t know that much myself… Enough, I suppose, to get a hash cookie…,”
She thought for a moment, then threw her head back in laughter.
As she laughed, he noticed how prominent her canines were. He knew some who If they had them would have filed them down. He had a second to reflect that he respected people who were happy with their bodies.
“Excuse me,” Helen said, tugging on his shoulder.
He turned to look at her, and it was clear she was annoyed he was paying attention to Lil.
“Ah,” he said, “It’s, um… It’s nice to have met you,” he said and gave a polite nod to Lil before turning back to his friends.
Helen looked past him at Lil and smiled triumphantly.
Suddenly she dropped her arm to her side.
In a monotone, she said, “I must go to the washroom.”
“Are you alright?” Maria asked.
“I must go to the washroom…,” Helen repeated and turned and walked off as if in a daze.
Peter just looked at Maria and shrugged his shoulders.
Peter turned to see if Lil was there, and he noticed she was heading to the washroom too.
Helen walked into the washroom and suddenly felt giddy. She wondered why she had gone there.
She turned to leave and was confronted by Lilith.
“I was talking to him,” Lilith said. “You interrupted.”
“That’s too bad, bitch,” Helen snarled.
“You know,” Lilith smiled, “I usually just fuck women, but there’s something about him… His scent…And then…I heard him say a bit about his blood… So, I’m rather interested in him…”
“What the fuck are you talking about?” Helen growled. She went to step past Lilith. Lilith took a step to the side to block her.
“I want him,” she said.
“That’s too bad,” Helen said.
“I see we’re going to have to do this the hard way!” Lilith smiled, and as she did, her upper canines drew down into long fangs.
“What the fuck are you?” Helen cried.
Lilith grabbed Helen, spun her around, and in an instant bit into Helen’s neck.
Helen felt a sharp sting, and then there was a wave of warmth that washed over her. In all the times she had been penetrated, she had never felt anything this exquisite. She gasped. Her sigh surprised her ears, and she realized she was coming.
“Ohhhhhhhh!’ she moaned.
Meanwhile, Peter was concerned Helen had not returned.
“I’m worried about her,” Peter said.
“I’ll go check on her…,” Maria said.
Maria smiled. She was finally warming to Peter. She knew he liked her, but the fact he was concerned for Helen showed he was chivalrous. She liked traditional values in men.
She grabbed her handbag off the bar and went to the washroom.
“I heard you said,” Lilith said. Peter jumped out of his skin as he spun around to see the blonde beauty. He didn’t even hear her approach.
“You said…,” she continued, “That you have a rare blood condition…,”
“Um… Yeah, that’s right.”
“Could you tell me about it?” she asked.
He gave her a look of surprise.
“I’m somewhat of an amateur enthusiast,” she smiled.
“Um, yeah, sure…,”
“Hold that thought!” she said as she seemed to be listening to something.
“Is there some place we can go?” she asked.
“Um… Look, not to be rude but…,”
“You want to come with me!” she said. As she spoke, her eyes seemed to glow red.
“Yes… I want to go with you,” he said in a monotone.
“Come,” she said, taking his hand and leading Peter away.
As they walked out the front door, there was the high pitch of a woman’s screams (as Maria found Helen in one of the bathroom stalls). Peter didn’t hear this amongst all the other noise, especially the street traffic.
Lil did. And she smirked.
Lil hailed a cab. She almost pushed Peter in she was so eager to get him home.
“Rittenhouse Square,” she said to the driver. She then handed him a hundred. “Step on it,” she added.
“Yes, Ma’am”, the driver smiled as he turned the note over in his hands.
“Do you always pick up…,” Peter began when she pressed her finger to his lips.
She leaned in and took a deep breath. She was drawn to his scent… Like she was intoxicated by him.
Lil pushed a hand into his shirt and ran her hand up under his arm. She felt his sweat. She drew her hand back and inhaled the scent from his armpit. “Mmmm,” she sighed.
Peter had a boner.
He looked embarrassed to the driver who was glancing in his rear-view mirror… with a big smile on his face.
The journey from the South Street club to the Square was only ten minutes.
Lil practically dragged him from the taxi.
He had a moment to look up at the impressive apartment block as she leant in the enger window as if to pay the driver even more.
He heard her murmuring something in a strange language, and then she stood up and put her money back in her purse.
He wondered why the driver would not have taken a fee.
“You live here?”
“I want you,” was her answer as she dragged him inside, past a well-dressed doorman.
They caught the elevator up to the thirteenth floor.
“Oh, baby,” she gasped as she had her hand down his pants the whole time.
She was so hot.
In her apartment, she threw him on the couch. She dropped her dress off, no underwear. Her huge breasts bounced as she leapt onto him.
“Oh, baby!” she gasped. She undid his fly and embraced him with her body sliding down onto his member.
She tore his shirt open. Buttons flew everywhere.
“What the…?” he gasped. Her eyes glowed.
Her mouth opened, and he almost shrieked as he saw her fangs.
He grabbed her around the neck.
She took hold of his wrist, both squeezing it and drawing it away easily.
He was shocked by how strong she was.
“Don’t play hard to get,” she smiled.
She plunged her mouth against his throat. “Ow!” he gasped as her razor-sharp fangs sliced through his flesh.
His blood welled up into her mouth.
“Mm-nn-nnnmp,” she grunted as she fed.
And he lay there unable to resist.
His cock erupted.
She grunted as she drank.
“Ahhhh!” she gasped and sat up, still grinding her hips against him, but he was spent.
She fell back then, and her whole body spasmed.
“Your blood is amazing!” she laughed.
In a moment of clearness, Peter pulled himself out from under her, not even bothering to do his pants up properly.
His wallet and keys fell, but he ran to the door so eager to flee.
Part Two
It was eleven months to the day after he left the police station (he was interviewed about the murder of Helen Brady… though never a suspect… No one believed a single man acting alone had torn Helen to pieces).
And he could not tell people what he had experienced. He could hardly believe he had met a vampire. The idea that vampires are actually real blew his mind.
He heard the front door lock being tried.
He had a 9mm handgun in a drawer by the door. He grabbed it, put a bullet in the spout and then got ready to confront whoever was out there.
He went to the door and looked out through the spyhole.
“My God!” he gasped, seeing Lilith there.
He opened the door. She had his keys in her hand… He’d changed the lock after losing them.
What surprised him was her swollen stomach.
“May I come in?” she asked.
“What?”
“I… We need to talk,” she said.
“Ah…?”
“I need- sorry. I would like you to invite me in…”
“Um…?”
“Please,” she said. “I won’t bite.”
He hesitated.
“Promise,” she grinned, letting her fangs extend and retract for dramatic effect.
He showed he had a gun. She laughed. “That thing won’t work on me…,” she said.
“I, ah…,”
“This is about you…,” she said, patting her baby bump.
“Um…,”
“Please…,”
“Sure,” he said.
She smiled and, released by his permission, stepped over the threshold.
“Close the door!” she snapped.
He did.
“Come, we need to talk…”
He shrugged and followed her into his own lounge room.
“Sit! Sit!” she snapped.
“Okay, what is this?”
“This!” she said, rubbing her stomach.
“You impregnated me.”
“Look, that was eleven mon…” he began to say.
“You did it,” she said, interrupting him. “Look,” she paused, “I am not human, our gestational period is not the same as yours….” She paused. “Higher species have longer gestational periods.”
“Higher species?”
“Yes, we meta-humans are far superior to prey…,”
“Prey?”
“You… Humans…”
“Then how did…?” he began.
“I don’t know. But it happened. Your blood… When I fed from you… It was the most exquisite I’d ever had. Even tastier than a virgin’s….”
He rubbed his neck unconsciously, touching where she had assailed him.
“Something about you… you’re…. you’re different…”
“Different? How?”
“I don’t know…What I do know is this child is from you… And because of it I’ve had to hide…”
“Hide?”
“Yes,” she said, “If my family knew I was carrying a hybrid, they’d kill it… Maybe me too!”
“Hybrid?”
“Yes… We call them dhampir…,” she said.
“What’s a dhampir?”
“A hybrid! Have you not been listening…?” she snapped. He reeled back, sinking low into his chair.
“Our child will perhaps grow up completely human… but with enhanced abilities… Or, if she goes through the manifestation, she will have the same hunger I have… She will be able to prey on others…”
“She will?”
“Yes, I carry a girl child…”
“How do…?”
“We can tell…,” she said as a matter of fact. “Don’t interrupt again, I only tolerate you because…at this moment I need you…She needs you.”
“Okay…,” he said sheepishly.
“When she is born, I need you to care for her… Raise her. Protect her. My kind… if they sense her, they will kill her… She is… an anathema to our way of life. But once she manifests (if she manifests) she will be powerful and have a chance and survive. For one thing, she will be able to move freely in the daylight. We, we can move about at this time but must avoid direct exposure from sun-kill.”
(Sun-kill was what the vampires called the excruciating, though quick death by the sun’s deadly rays).
“Will you have your daughter?” she asked, suddenly toning down her arrogant voice.
“This is a lot to take...,”
“I need an answer now…”
“Now?”
“Yes, so I can deliver her…”
She paused. He did not know that a vampire could choose when to deliver their baby. The baby took eleven months to grow in her, and then she could choose the time and place best suited to birth. It had been known that a vampire carried her baby for three years because she enjoyed the experience.
“Very well,” he said.
“Yes?”
“Yes, okay…,”
“Okay… Good… Take me to your bath…”
“My b…,” he paused, seeing her sneer. He ed not to question her.
“This way,” he said, “Your highness…,” he added sarcastically.
She winced. She had never had to tolerate such insolence from a lower creature before.
“So, you’ve heard of other dhampir?” he asked as he led her down the hallway.
“Yes… I’ve heard stories. They are so rare…”
“Ah,” she said, seeing the bath. She began taking off her clothes.
He got an instant hard-on. He now ed just how beautiful she was. It was the allure. Vampires projected an aura that was attractive and inviting. A dichotomy at play because just as humans desired the vampire, it was replicated. Vampires needed human blood. For all their arrogance, due to their superiority, they were addicted to humans.
She got onto the edge of the bath, spreading her legs, one foot planted on each side.
She grimaced, and he watched her water break.
She did not look like she had any pain as she bore down again.
He was in awe as he saw the head appear, pushing out from her.
The baby slipped from her and landed in the bath.
She wiped her brow and picked up and cleared the baby’s nose.
“We don’t cry…,” she said as she noticed him looking concerned (that the baby made no cry).
“Get some towels,” she said.
He returned to see her biting through the umbilical cord.
What she did with the afterbirth made him sick.
She had him rub the baby clean with the towels, rather than wash her.
She washed the bath and her crotch till both were clean. And then, with no fuss, simply dressed.
It had all taken less than ten minutes.
“You know…,” she smiled as he held his newborn daughter, “If you had said you would not help, I would have drained you dry…”
“Um… well… That’s good to know…,” he grimaced.
“I will put $10,000,000 in your ,” she said.
“What?”
“You will leave this city… Go…,”
“Go where…?”
“Someplace…. Isolated…,” she said. “Less chance of meeting one of us…”
“I… we…we won’t see you again…”
“Maybe in a dozen years…I might… check in on you…” she said, “Check in on her…”
She rubbed her baby’s head in the first sign of affection he had seen from her.
“I would suggest someplace tropical… Bali?”
“Why Bali?”
“Longer days closer to the equator,” she said, “My kind do not go to such places…”
“What are we going to call her?”
“Names do not mean the same to us…,” she said, “Being as long-lived as I have been… I have been known by many names, in many cultures…”
“Um… Okay…”, he said, “Um…I have always liked the name Helen…”
Lilith said nothing. She was honest in saying she did not care.
But she ed a woman from long ago… pleading for her life in a nightclub toilet stall… That amused her… that he named the girl for that… that food.
She turned without much ado and headed to the front door.
He took a second to realise she was just going to leave, and he ran down the hall after her.
He caught up with her at the door.
“Would you have killed me?”
She turned, grabbed his throat, and lifted him as if he were made of paper. “What do you think?” she smiled before letting him back to his feet.
He coughed. When he managed to get his breath back, she was gone.
He looked down at his daughter. He felt a surge of paternal duty toward her.
In a day from then he got a notice of a deposit in his bank , of $10,049,080.
He had no idea how she had come to that particular figure.
And a week later, in the post, a bundle of documents, including a birth certificate. He examined it. It seemed real enough. And then he realised that it was, and she must have exerted her influence on some official to produce it.
Along with the birth certificate was a US port, in the name of Helen Aaldenberg.
He was impressed. It was quicker to arrive than his own. He didn’t obtain his own for six weeks, and by then, he had quit his job and was ready to leave.
Epilogue
Helen Aaldenberg grew up in Canggu, on Bali, Indonesia.
She noticed at an early age that she was somehow different. She learned to read early. She found she could run faster than most. One time, she leapt over a 12-foot wall.
Peter had warned her about ‘showing off’. And so, she did not overtly display these things. But it was frustrating. Having just finished school, she understood advanced math and had learned seven languages. She was thinking of going to university.
Walking along a cliff edge one day, the ground gave way, and she tumbled 40 feet. She broke ribs, a femur, and a tibia. She lay there in pain for about five minutes before she heard the cracking of bone and realised her body was mending,
In another five minutes, she was on her feet. She was perfectly fine.
She scrambled back up the cliff like a mountain goat.
“Dad! Dad!” she called as she ran into the family’s Bales (house).
Peter heard the tone of her voice and ran out to meet her.
She embraced him. She was upset. Helen recounted what had happened as they walked through their courtyard into the main house.
“Dad?” she asked…, “Why am I so… different?”
He had been expecting this question for some time. And though he had run over it many times in his head, her asking the question now took him by surprise. They entered the lounge room.
“Let’s talk,” Peter said.
“Okay,” Helen said, sitting down on the lounge.
“I think it’s about time I told you about how I met your mother…”
