The Green Sun

The green sun of Loren L was high in the sky, casting a strange greenish glow over the City of Escort. In any other circumstances, Madeline Ackerson would have taken the time to enjoy the strange sight. It had only been a few weeks since she arrived on Loren L and the sight of the green sun was still a novelty to her. However, today she was too worried to care.

Five days ago, she received a mysterious video call from her daughter’s new college. A robotic voice claiming to be the AI running the istrative system of the college left a message telling her that her daughter, Janice, was staying at the school for the whole weekend in order to better adapt to the school.

Before Madeline could get a word in, the line was cut.

It was the first day of college and her daughter decided to stay on campus after just one day? Madeline was instantly suspicious and tried to call her daughter. However, Madeline was unable to get through as the college had a jammer that blocked all outside signals. The jammer had been explained as a way to help student concentrate on their studies, and Madeline ed many parents being very approving of the system. Left with no choice, Madeline tried to call the college directly, but it was also to no avail.

Every time she called, the robotic AI would screen the call, tell her no one was available, and that someone would call her back. It took four days before someone finally did.

The call was via a holographic video call, or vidcall for short, and a woman fully covered in a veil appeared on the hologram. She called herself, Bey.

Like most of the local woman on Loren L, Bey only went by one name, and she claimed to be a lecturer at the college. Madeline was pleasantly surprised as she thought all the teachers at the college were men. They had a pleasant talk at first. The lecturer informed Madeline that her daughter was well and that it was Janice’s decision to stay for the weekend. Madeline requested to speak to Janice, but the request was rejected. The veiled woman just told Madeline her daughter was ‘busy’. Madeline tried to insist, but the lecturer was steadfast in her refusal.

As they spoke, Madeline got more and more suspicious. Her feelings must have been showing because Bey suddenly suggested that Madeline went to the college to see that things are well. It was a suggestion Madeline immediately accepted.

Madeline tried to keep calm as she watched the city ed. She knows there was a good chance she was just being paranoid. Janice was a proud girl of eighteen and nothing bad could realistically happen while she was on campus. Janice was on a new planet, in a new city, at a new college. It would make sense that she wanted to stay on campus instead of going back home for the weekend to see dear old mum. Janice should be fine.

However, there was a reason why Madeline was so anxious.

Planet Loren L was different from the other planets in the United Terran Federation. Situated at the very edge of the UTF, the original colonizers from Earth were scientists who had arrived in this solar system to study the strange green sun. They loved the system so much, all of them decided to settle down on an untamed planet with a dream of setting up a more ‘traditional’ society. Even back in those days, they were considered mad, but to everyone’s surprise, the colonizers succeeded.

Although the colony on Planet Loren L was relatively new with less than seventy years of history, the s of the City of Escort were ambitious and had built a large city with plans for expansion. In order to assist residents to get around the city, a large public train network was created. Running on a magnetic hovertrack, the train network was so convenient most residents, including people who could afford their own vehicles, choose to travel by the hovertrack instead.

Madeline was currently on one, and she was not alone. The train was crowded and the people inside was split fifty-fifty between the locals and new migrants. It was easy for Madeline to tell based on how everyone was dressed. She glanced at the local couple nearest to her.

The woman was wearing a loose black dress that was so wide it totally hides her figure. The dress was long enough to reach the floor of the train, black gloves covered the woman’s hands, and she was wearing a large black piece of cloth that covered her head. Madeline could not see a single strand of her hair and that wasn’t all. The woman’s face was covered by a gray veil called a niqab. It covered her face with only a small opening for her eyes. The woman’s fashion sense wasn’t the only thing that caused Madeline’s unease.

Madeline glanced down to the woman’s hands.

The woman’s hands were clasped together in front of her, and locked by a pair of red cuffs. A chain was attached to the cuffs and a man in his mid-twenties was holding the other end of it. The man was dressed wildly differently to the woman.

He was in a red suit and white shoes. Madeline could see a watch on his wrist, a gold ring on his finger and his eyes were covered by a stylish hi-tech silver visor that had visual enhancements. In his right hand was the chain that was attached to his woman’s cuffs.

The couple was not alone. They were with another local couple and both men were seated with their women standing before them with their head bowed. The two couples clearly knew each other as the men were talking about a local movie they had going to see while their women stood silently still.

This was not an isolated incident.

There were other local couples on the train and all of them were dressed in a similar fashion. The women were covered and cuffed, while their men were holding the chains. The locals saw nothing wrong with this, some of them would even tell Madeline this was the way it should be! Some men were even holdings the chains of more than one woman!

Madeline had to stop herself from shaking her head at the unfairness of it. The local men wore jewellery, used technological devices like the visor, had wrist communicators, and dressed in loud colorful clothes. The women were covered, cuffed, and chained. Madeline does not believe she had seen a single local woman dressed in anything that wasn’t in black, gray, or brown. It was almost like a sumptuary law for them. Rumors on the Galactic Net said that it was.

Of course, Madeline did not believe that. There were no laws that heavily favoured men over women on Loren L, and the planet was still part of the Federation. The Galactic Net also said that no local women studied beyond high school as it was not socially acceptable for a woman to have too much education, and Madeline knows that was not the case. After all, the colleges on Loren L were wiling to give Janice a scholarship. Any rules in place were cultural in nature, and it was only a matter of time before they were done away with.

Madeline looked away from the locals and took a deep breath to keep calm. Madeline mentally told herself she could not freak out. She knew this was the local customs on Loren L before coming here and was mentally prepared for it. She just did not realize how different it was to see them in real life.

It was a big problem for Madeline, and she was not only migrant who has an issue with it. There were many people on the train who were avoiding looking at the locals, and all of them were new migrants. To Madeline, the new migrants were all dressed like how normal people should be dressed. Smart power-suits that did not differentiate between men or women. None of them was dressed like they had a bedsheet over their body!

The number of migrants on the train was something Madeline took comfort in. Loren L had a reputation as a prosperous new planet, and more people from the UTF were arriving every day. Everyone knows it was only a matter of time before they outnumbered the locals and Madeline had already heard complains on the local news network about tension between the locals and the new migrants. Most of the news says the new arrivals need to adept and integrate to the local customs.

Madeline thought that was a joke.

Most of the new migrants look at the locals with distaste and Madeline put herself firmly in that camp. Once there was enough of them, they will throw the local customs into the scrapheap of history where it belongs. Madeline looked forward to that day.

The train stopped at a station and the two local men stood up. They walked out of the train together, still talking about the movie. Their women followed behind, having no choice in the matter as they were led out by the chains. Madeline had to stop herself from glaring as the train began to move out of the station. She told herself to be patient.

When the train finally reached her stop, Madeline walked out of the train alone. The local college was situated near the edge of the city and no one alight at the station unless they were going to it. The fact that it was so far at the edge of the city was surprising, but Madeline was informed the college wanted a quiet and peaceful location as it was a school of higher education.

It was a five-minute walk from the station to the college and when Madeline reached the campus, she took the path to the main istration building. The main istration building of the college was three stories tall, and about one block in size. As Madeline was walking to it, she saw a courtyard with several playing surfaces, a small park with plenty of trees, and a path for students to take walks on. It fit perfectly with the image of a highly specialized schooling environment. Outside the main door of istration building was a scanner. Madeline walked up to it so that it could scan her features and spoke.

“Ms. Madeline Ackerson, here for the two o’clock.”

After her announcement, the door opened, and Madeline immediately walked in. In the istration building, she was greeted by a robot between a counter. That was no surprise. With the rise of AI, most service jobs had been taken over by robots but the robot greeting her was a torso-only model, a sign of how backwards the colony was.

“Ms. Madeline Ackerson, I am here to meet the dean.”

The robot’s eyes glowed for a few seconds and Madeline had to stop herself from scoffing. The delay told Madeline the robot AI was at least two generations behind the latest robot model in the Federation. On Earth, the robot’s response would have been instantaneous. The robot eventually replied.

“Ms. Ackerson, welcome to Loren Inter-Planetary College. Mr. Hisham is expecting you. Please put on the headcovering and the niqab and I will let you in.”

Part of the counter opened, and a slide out. On it was a piece of black cloth. Madeline saw it, realized what the robot had just said, and exploded!

“What the hell! What are you talking about? There’s no way—”

“Don’t argue with a robot.”

Madeline turned around at the voice and saw two women standing behind her. Both of them had a piece of cloth in their hand, and they were both clearly unhappy. One of the women visibly sighed and put the headcovering over her head. It was awkward but the woman seems to know what she was doing. Then, the woman put on the niqab that covered her face.

When she was done, Madeline noticed that the niqab was long enough to reach the chest of the woman. The woman spoke after putting on the niqab.

“Robots are operated by their programs. They can’t make decision on their own. Never argue with a robot, it is just a waste of time. Just put on the veil, and we can see our kids.”

Madeline spoke to the two women and realized both were mothers who had children attending the college. Like Madeline, Amber Hollows and Leah Huang were both new migrants and single mothers who had enrolled their kids at the college. The understanding was that the children would be returning for the weekend, and both were worried about the change of plans. Like Madeline, the two mothers were also offered the chance to visit the college, and evidently the dean of the college, Mr Hisham, had arranged to meet all three of them together.

Madeline still wanted to argue against the veil, but the other two mothers did not wish to waste time. It did not take them long to change Madeline’s mind as she understood where the two women were coming from. Seeing their children was more important than putting a piece of cloth over their head.

Madeline put on the headcovering first, but she had no experience with the thing and the two other mothers had to help her with it. Unlike Madeline, both of them had take some online classes to better fit in with the locals. When the niqab was finally in place, the robot stood up and asked them to follow.

With no legs, the robot had wheels on its bottom and it guided the trio down a series of corridors. Madeline soon felt a sense of discomfort. Her breath was short, her steps were unsteady, and she had a growing headache. Not helping matters was the nondescript corridors which look the same. Madeline didn’t see any signs and wondered how students and staff knew where they were.

Madeline thought they were going to the dean’s office, but this was clearly not the case as the robot guided the three of them to a small room.

The room was bare with only four chairs in it, but one side of it was filled with windows that allowed the light of the green sun to shine through. The robot asked them to wait, and that the dean was on his way. It was strange but there was nothing the three mothers could do about it, so they waited. The chairs were locked in place, and the three women took their seats facing the lone empty chair before them.

Amber was the first to flip her niqab over head and broke the ice.

Amber asked the other two women about their lives and how they came to Loren L. Madeline was a little reluctant to tell her story but with nothing to do, she flipped her niqab over as well and began to tell her story.

Their stores were remarkably similar. All three of them were single mothers and were raising their children alone when they were all offered jobs on Loren L. The offers came with a big salary boost and an offer to place their children on the planet’s best schools.

Madeline found that she had a lot in common with the other two women, although there were some differences. They were both divorced instead of being widowed. Leah and Amber were sympathetic when they heard about the death of Madeline’s husband and how the insurance company has been dragging their feet in issuing the payout. Leah had two daughters instead of one, and informed Madeline that her younger daughter was currently studying in high school. Amber, like Madeline, only had a single daughter.

Like Madeline, both were having problems with money. Leah was raising two daughters on her own while Amber recently lost her job at an investment company. Loren L was a new start for all of them and they had all done their due diligence.

They read up on Loren L, went through countless websites on the Galactic Net, and spoke to the dean, Mr. Hisham, via vidcall for hours. All three had a video tour of the whole campus, and Leah even talked to her new neighbors via vidcall before deciding to move.

The college hybrid schedule, where students could stay on campus during the week and go back home during the weekend, was also very attractive to the three of them. Like Madeline, Leah and Amber itted that they could be overreacting, but they thought it was always better to be safe than sorry.

After ten minutes, just as the women were beginning to get impatient, the speakers in the corners of the room began to work. A male voice rang out from the speakers, and he spoke some of the most disgusting things Madeline had ever heard.

Women are shameful creatures.
Women are weak and foolish.
Women belong on their knees, serving their men.
Women enjoy listening to men.
Men’s wishes are a woman’s command.
A woman’s face should not be shown in public.
A woman’s voice should not be heard in public.
A woman’s hair should not be shown in public.
You are a shameful woman.
Your face should be covered.
Your mouth should be gagged.
Your hair should be shaved.
You belong on their knees, serving your man.
Obey their orders, and you will be well.

Madeline rushed to her feet, Leah and Amber only slightly behind. Color drained from their faces as the women looked at each other in confusion. After a moment of hesitation, Madeline walked to door, but nothing happened. There was no doorknob as the door was supposed to open whenever someone was nearby. It remained closed.

“There’s no signal.” Leah said.

Madeline turned and saw both Leah and Amber touching their wrist communicators. Madeline did the same, dreading what she would find.

There was no signal. The three women could not call for help.

The three women waited for something else to happen, but nothing did. The speakers keep repeating the same mantra, but the doors remained close and there were no one outside the windows as they look out onto the campus.

You belong on their knees, serving your man.

Madeline began to feel woozy and lightheaded, and she was not the only one. Madeline looked at the other two mothers who looked just as unsteady on their feet as she was. Amber sat down on a chair. Thinking that it was a good idea, Madeline went to her chair.

She never got there.

Her knees buckled and Madeline fell. To her horror, she had fallen to her knees and...she felt great. When her knees hit the floor, it was like it was a hugely significant, almost profound moment. Madeline felt like a great weight has been lifted off her, and that her worries and fatigue had been blasted away.

The words from the speakers felt like a proclamation.

Your face should be covered.

Madeline flipped her niqab over. It cascaded down to cover her face and Madeline released a deep breath she didn’t know she was holding. She realized it was relief. She no longer felt lightheaded.

Madeline looked at the other two mothers who had both stepped back in shock. They looked confused, but Madeline knew what they were both silently asking. Madeline gave them a firm nod.

Leah was first. The mother of two flipped the niqab over and fell to her knees. Amber fought harder than Madeline expected, but in time she was also covered and on her knees. Madeline looked at the time and was shocked.

It only took them five minutes to break their resistance!

“What the hell did you do with-Argh!”

That was all Amber should say before crying out in pain. She grabbed her head with hands and Madeline stood. A massive headache hit her. Madeline fell back to her knees, and the headache immediately went away. It was the same for Amber. The pain went away the moment she kept quiet.

The three mothers stayed on their knees, no one daring to speak. All they had were each other and the words from the speaker. Madeline listened carefully to the words. In time, she felt that the man’s voice was low, commanding, and full of power.

Then, Hisham Kadir Mansoo showed up.

Now, Madeline would never publicly say anything bad about the dean of her daughter’s college, but when Madeline first saw the dean on their vidcall, she did not like him. The man’s smile reeked of sleaze, and his physique told Madeline he was a man who had let himself go later in life.

Currently, Hisham was dressed in a bright red shirt that was straining to contain his beer belly gut, and he wore a pair of blue pants with an obnoxiously large golden skull buckle on his belt. He had a thick brown beard that completely looked out of place on his oval-ish face, and he had sagging skin with a receding hairline. In short, he looked nothing like a dean of a college.

He looked like an oily, greasy salesman.

“Ms. Ackerson, Ms. Hollows, Ms. Huang, welcome to Loren Inter-Planetary College.” Hisham said in a friendly manner before moving to stand in front of the three kneeling women. “Well, I hear the three of you have some worries about your daughters.”

The three mothers looked at each other, hoping that someone else would speak. Hisham solved their conundrum with his next words.

“The women may speak.”

A pressure lifted from Madeline. She looked up at Hisham, and he looked different. He was tall, strong, and powerful. He was eloquent beyond Madeline’s limited comprehension, and his dark soulful eyes were evidence of his intellect and culture. He was a master that a lowly woman like Madeline could only hope- Madeline shook her head.

Terror erupted within her heart.

What was she thinking? She did not think like this. These thoughts were alien, evil and they did not belong to her.

“What is happening to us? Where are our daughters?” Leah asked in a voice so low it might as well be a whisper.

“Of course Ms. Huang, let me first explain why we’ve decided to ask your daughters to stay with us the weekend.” Hisham paused and them a smile before carrying on. “You see, all your daughters are new migrants, and they are having problems adapting to the local customs. So, the college decided it would be best if we to keep them here for the weekend to get them accustomed to our school’s methodology.”

“Why?” Leah asked.

“Well, being a woman is a hard and, at times, harsh life. They served not only their husbands, but also all the men in their family. In an extended family, there could be many men and it would not be wrong to call women the lowest of the low in the family. They must be taught that. They must be taught they are lower than men, and here at Loren Inter-Planetary College, we believed it is best to start the training of a woman early, and to not let up on the training.”

Madeline’s mind went blank. She did not understand what Hisham was saying. Lower than men? Serving them? Training? She could understand the words, but not what he was saying. The three mothers looked at each other in shock, and the dean continued.

“Now, I am certain you are wondering how that is possible. After all, your daughters are strong, smart, fiercely independent young women trained from birth to know their worth, and their rights to equality. Well, the way we here on Loren L, we do this is through—”

“Wait, wait a minute. What are you talking about?”

Leah had enough. She stood, or at least tried to. Madeline could see her legs shaking. The dean was unfazed by Leah. In fact, his smile got wider.

“Ah yes, the inevitable confrontation. Almost all the mothers do this, but I did not give you permission to stand, Ms. Huang. You are standing without permission. Do you not feel shame?”

Madeline felt a shiver going up her spine at Hisham’s words. He wa right. For some reason, Madeline felt it would be shameful to be standing in the presence of this strong powerful man.

She did not deserve to be standing.

Women belong on their knees, serving their men.

“You deserved to be punished. All three of you.” Madeline’s heart leapt at Hisham’s words. She was going to be punished, and she was happy!

“Well, since it is your first time, I can’t be too hard on you three, so let’s do something so simple even useless women like the three of you would have no problem doing.” Hisham said. “Now, the three of you will crawl to me on your hands and knees and lick my shoes.”

Madeline’s hands touch the ground before she knew what she was doing. She looked over at Leah and Amber, they were in the same position as her!

“Women, start crawling.”

Madeline fought against the dean’s command, and immediately felt the migraine returning. Madeline refused to crawl. Within seconds, she fell onto the floor along with the other two mothers, the pain in her head becoming unbearable. She tried to fight. She wanted to speak.

Then, she wanted to beg. Madeline wanted to say something. Anything, but she couldn’t. She could not speak. Then, from the corner of her eyes, she saw Leah getting up. Leah got to her hands and knees and crawled!

Madeline looked on in pain as Leah crawled to Hisham, lifting the niqab over her face, and begun licking the man’s feet. Madeline heard an audible sigh of relief from her.

She immediately fought to get up. Madeline began crawling and was soon at Hisham’s feet alongside Leah. Madeline lift her niqab, opened her mouth, stick out her tongue and ed Leah.

Her migraine disappeared immediately.

Madeline stopped her licking, looked back the dean and saw his sinister smile. The migraine came back, and Madeline had no choice but to go back to licking. Moments later, she felt Amber ing them.

“Now, I am sure all three of you are wondering what is going on. Well, before I explain, I believe all three of you had spoken to Bey. In case you are wondering, she really is a teacher here, and her main job is to teach your daughters how to cook, clean, and be a dutiful wife to their future husbands.”

“Their what?” Amber asked. Mr. Hisham ignored her and continued.

“On Loren L, women are shameful useless creatures. Women are only fit to be dutiful, obedient wives, with no mind or thoughts of their own. They served their fathers, their husbands, and their sons. That is all they are good for.”

Mr. Hisham was monologuing like some villain in a third-rated fantasy movie. The migraine came back. Madeline quickly cleared her mind of such thinking and thought about how strong and powerful Hisham was. Instead of pain, a sense of peace and happiness came over her. Madeline realized the pain come and go with her thoughts.

But how?

“Now, the social position of men and females are quite clear on Loren L. Men lead, females follow. However, the majority of new migrants had no wish to follow local customs. In time, this will change. Sooner or later, the female migrants will obey. It is inevitable. The green sun commands it. But we cannot let the growing tensions grow out of hand while we wait.”

The green sun? What does the sun has to do with any of this?

Madeline did not voice out her thoughts. In fact, there was nothing but silence after Hisham’s speech.

No one spoke, and there were no sounds but that of them licking his shoes. Clearly, Hisham was hoping for some sort of comeback from the mothers as he sounded almost disappointed when he continued.

“Now, you may think that is impossible, but it really isn’t. The founders noticed it when they arrived in the system. The green sun gives off a strange radiation that affects X and Y chromosomes differently. No one really knows why, but men become more confident while women become more submissive. Research shows that women feel a higher sense of shame and will change their behavior accordingly. All they need is time, and they don’t even need to be in the presence of the green sunlight! So, all the new migrants will be integrated into our society in time. However, why wait?

Research had shown that we can help the process along. All we have to do is to take a young woman, keenly aware of her rights to equality, and strip it away. Strip everything from her, piece by piece. Make her dependent, insecure, unassuming. Assign her simple mind-numbing tasks to dull her intelligence through repetition and use a reward and punishment system to mold and domesticate her. The green sun will do the rest. Come.”

Hisham walked out of the room. Madeline was wondering what to do when her mind erupted in pain again. The order to lick Hisham’s feet was still in place.

Madeline quickly crawled after the dean, trying to lick his moving feet. Amber and Leah were right there with her. Hisham did not stop, or even slowed. He walked as if the three women did not exist, and the three mothers could only follow after him on their hands and knees. The pain came back, only occasionally lessen when Madeline managed to lick Hisham’s moving feet.

It was easily the most humiliating thing Madeline had ever done.

Hisham went into a room and to Madeline’s dismay, it wasn’t empty. It was a classroom of some sort, with a wide screen in front and empty chairs and desks. However, the desks were designed strangely. On either side of each desk was a bar and Madeline could see what the bar was for.

There were women in the classroom, and each one of them was kneeling with their knees wide apart behind one of the bars. They were all dressed in power suits and had a veil over their heads like Madeline. Madeline realized they were also mothers of the students here. Some of the mothers were crying, but they kept to the position they were clearly ordered to be in.

Hisham told Madeline, Amber and Leah where to kneel. Each of them was next to a desk, and Hisham told them to keep their knees apart when cuffing their hands to the bars. He then went to the door and pressed an intercom asking the students to come in.

The first group to enter the room was a group of boys chatting with each other. They looked at the kneeling women like it was an everyday occurrence and went straight to take their seats. It was the female students behind them that was shocking to the kneeling mothers.

Each of the female student was dressed like a local with a wide dress that hid their figure, black gloves that covered their hands, and a niqab that only had a small opening for the eyes. Their hands were cuffed and the chain attached was held by the male student in front of them.

This was the school Madeline sent Janice to!

As the boys and girls entered the room, the boys sat in their chairs while the girls knelt with their head bowed, legs apart legs and their hands cuffed to the bar next to the desk of their masters.

Madeline realized that’s what the boys were. They were the Masters of the girls kneeling beside them.

She looked at the boy whose desk she was cuffed to, but did not recognized him. Madeline then looked at the girl kneeling on the other side of the boy. The girl was looking at her as well. She spoke and the words broke Madeline.

“Hello, mother.”
