An Eldritch Pact
Chapter 07
By Nightfuel
“I can’t believe you’re actually going through with this.”
On the sofa, curled up and wearing one of Karl’s hoodies, Jessica glared at her boyfriend. She had been sulking for days, ever since he had told her about the job offer. Karl and his girlfriend had barely spoken about the plans for the house he had inherited — every conversation they had always seemed to devolve into having sex. But even if she hadn’t brought it up, Jess had clearly not changed her mind about what she felt was the best way forward. She either wanted Karl to sell his uncle’s cabin or to rent it out.
Moving up to the mountains permanently was not on her agenda.
It had been an ugly scene when Alisha had stopped by with the official offer. Jessica had not been … hospitable to the attractive blonde. As for Alisha, she seemed almost skittish around Karl. They hadn’t been alone since that afternoon in her house a few days prior. She wasn’t avoiding him exactly, it was more like she was embarrassed. Karl wondered at how she could change her behaviour so quickly. She had been so bold at the time.
Not anymore. In fact, Alisha cast so many embarrassed looks Karl’s way that Jess’s eyes had started to narrow in suspicion. It had certainly made her jealously ionate — Jess had jumped Karl almost before Alisha had made it out the door. She’d certainly mounted him before the blonde had made it off the property.
But as the days had gone by, and Karl’s first day at his new job drew closer, Jessica’s mood had soured.
Karl sighed at his girlfriend as he finished tying his boots.
“Jess …”
“Don’t you ‘Jess’ me, Karl. This isn’t what I signed up for. I came up here with you for a holiday. And now you’re going to work? I mean, what the hell?”
Karl thought of pointing out that it wasn’t a holiday, and that he’d never pitched it to his girlfriend as such, but he knew that wouldn’t go down well. Then he inwardly shrugged, and said it anyway.
“It’s not a holiday, Jess. It was to sort out my inheritance — you know that. And I view this as part and parcel to my uncle’s cabin.”
Jessica sniffed.
“You’re overreaching.”
“Come on, Jess. I can’t up this opportunity! Not when it fell into my lap like this. You’ve always believed in serendipity, haven’t you?”
Jessica waved her hand dismissively.
“Only for good things.”
“Isn’t this a good thing?”
Jessica looked away from Karl, glaring at the wall. Karl frowned himself. Gone were the days when he felt like he just had to take Jessica’s moods. His voice firmed as he looked down at his girlfriend.
“It is a good thing, Jess. it it. I have a house — and now a job! And it’s a better paying one than the one I had back home. If it works out, and I can make it stick … things are looking up. So why are you acting so pissy?”
Jessica’s shoulders had begun to slump in resignation as Karl spoke, but her head snapped around to his at the last comment. She gave him an outraged look.
“I am not pissy!”
Karl sighed in exasperation. Jess had been all over the place the past few days. Even if he understood some of it, it still made his head spin. She’d been angry and annoyed by turns. Trying to punish him with the silent treatment, and then acting all kittenish with him. Like she just couldn’t keep her hands off of him no matter what her mood.
But Jess was still his girlfriend and he did love her. So Karl tried.
“Look, sorry — I shouldn’t have said that. But we only have two weeks up here, and most of the first week has already gone. Before I make a decision I’m going to see this through, see how it goes. Alisha was kind enough to give me a one week trial — with the option to make it permanent after. I can’t this up.”
Jessica huffed out a frustrated breath.
“I don’t know why she’s going to so much trouble for you.”
“Can’t someone just be nice, Jess?”
Karl’s girlfriend rolled her eyes in derision.
“Please. I saw how she was looking at you. Strutting around in that tight skirt with her fat ass. She’s just trying to get into your pants. God know why.”
“Wow. Thanks, babe.”
Jessica flushed.
“I didn’t mean — I just —”
“Yeah yeah. Look, I gotta get going. I don’t want to be late.”
Jessica looked conflicted, guilty. She still tried one last thing though.
“But what am I supposed to do? You’re taking the truck, so I’m just stuck here.”
Karl looked over his shoulder at Jess as he put on his coat.
“It’s not that far into town. You liked that cafe I took you to. Just … relax! I only have the one job lined up for today, so I should be back by early afternoon.”
Jessica crossed her arms, not looking all that appeased.
“Why only one job? Hardly worth it.”
Karl just shrugged.
“I’m on retainer, not getting paid by the job. And I think Alisha is making the first week easy. Nothing too frantic so I’m more likely to stay.”
Jessica’s face had darkened when he brought up Alisha again, but she didn’t address it.
“I can’t spend the whole day at a cafe, Karl. I can’t believe you’re doing this to me.”
Karl stopped, and stared at the ceiling for a long moment. Then he turned around, crouching down in front of his girlfriend. Karl cupped her chin in one hand, tilting her face up to him. He felt Jessica shiver in his grip, and she leant into his hand. Karl’s dick throbbed in his pants, like it had been doing ever since he arrived here in Bracken Ridge. It was a struggle not to just scoop Jessica’s slender form into his arms and carry her up to the bedroom. Only the fact that he had a job waiting stopped him.
“Hey now. This is good, Jess. For the both of us. No rent means more money! Tell you what, why don’t you have a look around town, see if you can find anyone hiring. I know you don’t like your job at the store in the city. You might find something better, you never know.”
Jessica licked her lips, her eyes half closing as she sat still in Karl’s grasp. Her voice sounded weaker than before, but she still tried.
“I don’t want to work in a hick town like this —”
Karl spoke firmly over the top of his girlfriend.
“Jess, it’s a resort town. If anything, it’s over-gentrified.”
“… whatever.”
Karl shook Jessica’s head gently. He felt a surge of power at treating her like this, but he kept it off of his face. Karl had never imagined he could act this way with his girlfriend. He always thought she’d kick him in the balls if he tried.
“Tell me you’re at least going to look into it. Promise me.”
Jessica’s eyes flickered, but then all the fight went out of her. She hesitated, then just muttered.
“… fine. I will. I … promise.”
“That’s my girl. Anyway I better run. I’ll see you later!”
Karl kissed the crown of Jessica’s head and then headed out. Yes, he was very much enjoying the new Jess. And she seemed be getting better every day.
As Karl drove through the quiet roads on the way to first job, he kept an eye out. He hadn’t told anyone about his nearly being run over — and he wasn’t entirely sure why. Karl rationalised it after the fact, reckoning that it had just been some random and inattentive driver — maybe a tourist. Hell, they might not have even realised that they had hit him! Somehow he couldn’t parse the idea that someone had intentionally tried to run him down. It had to have been an accident.
Karl was still wary though. He’d had a massive bruise on his hip where the car had clipped him, as well as a matching one where he had slammed into that tree. Jessica had certainly been alarmed. They had faded though, faster than Karl had expected, leaving only a faint greenish discolouration now. A good thing too, as Karl wouldn’t have enjoyed doing anything physical for work if he had been as battered as he’d feared.
There had been no more run ins with Jasper either. Karl would have brought up the old caretaker with Alisha, but she had leery of being alone with him. In the end Karl had been left with nothing but questions. It would have weighed on his mind but … he’d been distracted.
It was hard to dwell on anything when sex with his girlfriend was always on offer. Karl had felt like all he had to do was crook his finger at Jess and she would immediately strip. In fact, he had tried that. She hadn’t taken her clothes off but, after a moments hesitation, she’d walked over and settled onto Karl’s lap, straddling him.
Also, Karl hadn’t been sleeping all that well. He’d been having … vivid dreams.
Before Karl realised it, he had arrived at his first job. He actually knew the person who lived at the old-styled cottage — it was Alisha’s friend, Amanda. Karl had wondered if Alisha had pulled some strings, either to make his first job easy, or to give her friend preferential treatment.
Karl parked his truck, and walked up to the front door. He consulted his paperwork. It wasn’t anything too major, just general maintenance. The kind of thing that homeowners could do themselves, but either didn’t have the time or inclination for it. Karl knocked on the door.
The door swung open, and Karl found his hand being vigorously shaken by a hearty-looking bear of a man.
“Karl, right? Amanda told me she’d arranged for you to come round. Nice to meet you!”
Karl was momentarily nonplussed. He had been expecting the more appealing visage of Amanda. Actually he could see her behind what he assumed was her husband, looking amused.
Karl firmed his grip, giving the man what he called his ‘professional handshake’. He smiled.
“Likewise. You’re Jamie, right? Sorry, we haven’t been properly introduced.”
Jamie grinned. He had a thick, dark beard, clipped fairly close to his jaw.
“Ah, where are my manners? Yes, Jamie’s my name. My wife told me about you after Alisha introduced her. But you know all that. How are you? Enjoying the town?”
Karl tried not to wince. Every word out of Jamie’s mouth boomed, slightly louder than expected. For all that, he took an instant liking to Jamie. He seemed like a good guy.
“More and more, Jamie. Especially since Alisha arranged this job.”
Jamie stroked his chin, nodding.
“That’s our Alisha for you. Always on top of everything. Although maybe you already know that?”
Karl blinked as Jamie’s eyes twinkled at him. Getting what the man was implying, he tried not to look uncomfortable. He was rescued by Amanda stepping forward and smacking her husband across the back of his head.
“Jamie, don’t be vulgar.”
Jamie winced, and looked slightly abashed.
“Sorry, dear. But you said that Alisha told you that —”
Amanda spoke loudly over her husband.
“That she found Karl the job. Yes, she’s always been proactive like that. Karl, nice to see you again.”
Karl ducked his head, hoping his cheeks weren’t red.
“You as well, Amanda.”
Amanda looked just as cute as she had the first time Karl had met her. She was wearing a flannel button up shirt again, but this time she wearing a loose pair of pale blue sweatpants with them. Her red hair fell beguilingly around her face, off-setting her pale skin. Her eyes were shining as she smiled at him consideringly. Amanda seemed to hesitate for a second, and then she looked at her husband.
“Jamie, why don’t you take Bethany for her walk before the air gets too chilly. That’s our daughter, Karl. We try and get her outside at least once a day.”
Jamie nodded easily.
“For all that she’s still a little one. Still, she seems to enjoy our outings! Are you coming with us, Amanda?”
“No, dear. I’d have to get changed, and someone has to show Karl what we want done.”
Her husband chuckled.
“Too true! Karl, it’s nothing too hard that we need done. I just don’t have the time with my job — driving trucks, you know. My days off I’d much rather spend with my lovely ladies!”
Amanda smiled, playfully shoving her husband.
“Oh, you. Get going you big lug.”
Karl waited in the entranceway to their home as the couple got organised, trying not to ogle Amanda’s ass in her sweatpants as she bent over to buckle her child into a stroller. The loose fabric seemed to mould to her buttocks, accentuating her curves. In short order, Jamie and their child was out the door, leaving Karl alone with Amanda.
Amanda was all business to begin with. She asked Karl if he minded her having the heating on inside. It was a little warmer than he preferred to work in, but he didn’t mind. There were two jobs that he was here to do, and only one of them would have him inside for any length of time anyway. The first was cleaning and inspecting the gutters around the cottage, and the second was cleaning the chimney. The first was easy, and the second was a little more involved. Messy as well, but Karl had done it before.
Karl spent about forty minutes on the gutters — and only took that long because he wanted to be thorough. After that he set about preparing his work area inside the house. The fireplace was quite a large one, set in stone, and in the main living area. After Karl finished setting up the tarps to catch all the creosote and ash, he set to work cleaning.
All in all, Karl enjoyed cleaning the chimney and fireplace far more than he should have — even though he soon had a light sweat on with heat. It was worth it though as he could see right into the kitchen from where he was working. Or, to be more accurate, he could see Amanda sitting in the kitchen on a stool. The attractive redhead was humming a melody to herself, absently kicking her legs as she thumbed through a magazine. She was barefoot, and Karl took a lot longer than he strictly needed to as his mind and his eyes kept wandering.
The longer he watched Amanda, the better the view got. For some reason she started arching her back, scooting her behind back on the stool in an exaggerated fashion. Her sweatpants pulled tight over her backside and thighs, and her shirt lifted up slightly to expose the pale and freckled skin above her waistband. Karl could see the dimples on Amanda’s lower back, just above the swell of her buttocks.
Karl could feel his body responding to the attractive woman — he couldn’t keep his eyes off of her. And it was the strangest thing. The longer he watched her, the more intently he stared, the better things got. They weren’t talking or interacting, and Karl was sure that she wasn’t watching him. He was staring so much that he would have seen even the most casual of glances.
Fuck, but she’s fine. And her milky skin with those freckles … I wish she wasn’t wearing such a heavy shirt. I’d love to see more skin.
When Amanda turned slightly side on, lifting her arms into the air in a theatrical yawn, Karl was so surprised he bumped his head. He stared, intent, as Amanda reached down and scratched at her stomach, lifting the bottom of her shirt just past her bellybutton. Her stomach was pale and pleasantly rounded, but surprisingly toned for someone who’d had a baby. Karl just stared at her until Amanda eventually readjusted her shirt. He shivered, trying to get control of himself. Then set about finishing his job.
When Karl was finished he carefully rolled up all the tarps and carried them outside. Amanda had told him he could clean up in the laundry, so he spent a few minutes washing his face and hands — although he wasn’t all that dirty once he had taken his overclothes off. When Karl exited the laundry, he jumped, startled. Amanda was standing in the doorway, just looking at him. After a few seconds of giving Karl a long considering look, she smiled faintly at him.
Karl tried as best he could, but he couldn’t help but let his eyes dart down to her chest. There was a lot more to see now.
Amanda had unbuttoned her flannel shirt to just below her sternum — low enough that the inner swell of her breasts was exposed. She wasn’t wearing a bra, and Karl couldn’t help but be captivated by the freckles that dotted her soft skin.
Amanda’s smile widened, and she absently fanned at her exposed chest.
“I hope you don’t mind, Karl. I think I had the heat set too high — It’s far too warm. You should have said something to me.”
Karl licked his lips, unable to keep his eyes on her face. Amanda didn’t seem to mind in the slightest though. Karl cleared his throat.
“No, uh, I didn’t mind, Amanda. It was fine.”
Amanda swayed a half-step closer to him. She was still fanning her chest with her hand.
“Are you sure? You’re not just saying that? If I was sweating, you must have been. It’s far too … hot. In here.”
“Yeah. I mean, it’s what happens with these older buildings. Over insulated.”
Amanda moved even closer.
“Mmm. You’re quite right, Karl. Thick walls …”
Karl had never been so conflicted. He had a girlfriend, and she was married. With a child! He wanted to back away from Amanda. He wanted to reach out and tear her shirt open all the way, exposing her breasts. The opposing desires kept him locked in place.
Karl could feel his heart rate soaring His dick was throbbing in his pants, and he was sure Amanda could see how hard he was. In fact, he saw her glance down at his crotch, a shiver running through her.
Amanda licked her lips, and coyly tugged at the hem of her flannel shirt. It pulled it down, opening it up even more. Any further and her breasts were going to just spill out. Karl swore he could see the very edge of a pink areola …
“I’m glad you’re here, Karl … In Bracken Ridge …”
Karl gave in, and stepped closer to the redheaded woman. His voice was rough. Guttural.
“… you are?”
Amanda shivered again at Karl’s voice. Her own went soft, lower.
“Mhmm. It’s going to be so helpful. Having a man like you here, helping out. I’m sure I can find something else for you to … do. There’s just something about you that …”
“Like what, Amanda?”
Karl reached out with one hand, taking hold of Amanda by the hip. His fingers slipped under the bottom of her shirt, resting on her bare flesh. Amanda’s skin felt so soft and silken. Yielding under his touch. Amanda’s eyes widened, and her pupils looked huge. She shivered once more.
“Oh yes. I can certainly see why Alisha was —”
“Honey? We’re back! Bethany had the best time. Is Karl still here?”
The sound of a booming voice and the door being opened made Amanda’s eyes widen in a different way. She looked at Karl as though confused, seeming shocked at her state of dress and his hand on her hip.
The two of them sprung apart as Amanda quickly fumbled with the buttons of her shirt. She looked panicked, but her voice was remarkably even as she called back to her husband.
“He is, Jamie! Hang on, I’ll be out in a second!”
