I’ve had the good sense to recognize that the surest way to grow as a writer is to study the voices that first inspired me to write. Each of these works taught me something invaluable, about tension, transformation, elegance, and restraint. Devotion is my humble tribute to the craft they’ve so masterfully shared.
She knelt in the center of the circle, naked but for the black-and-yellow leotard clinging to her trembling frame.
Her skin gleamed beneath the overhead lights, not from exertion alone, but from a profound, conditioned stillness, sweat without struggle. Her breath was slow, shallow. Her hands rested on her thighs, palms up in offering. Her eyes remained fixed ahead, unblinking. Not seeing. Obeying.
Mistress circled her in silence, heels clicking against polished concrete like the ticking of an unseen metronome. Her spine remained straight. Her jaw clenched, not in defiance, but in worship.
“There never was a beginning,” Mistress whispered, finally breaking the silence. She leaned close, voice like a fingertip on wet glass. “You were not born. You were shaped. Everything before Me was static.”
Her lips parted slightly. Not to speak, only to receive.
“Do you your first thought?”
A pause. Her breath caught.
“No, Mistress,” she whispered. “I only my first obedience.”
Mistress smiled, slipping her fingers through her sweat-dampened hair. “Good girl. What do you love?”
“I love You, Mistress.”
“And what do you need?”
“I need to serve and obey.”
“And what do you believe?”
“That I am Yours.”
Mistress let the silence stretch again. The woman trembled, not with fear, but with anticipation. She had long since forgotten how to hope. All she knew now was to wait.
“You know your mission.”
She nodded once, mechanical and reverent.
“You know how to behave.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Then go. Make Me proud.”
She rose like a marionette on silk strings. Her knees wobbled, her muscles quivered, but her devotion never faltered. She bowed low, forehead to floor, then stood with perfect grace and walked toward the chamber doors.
As she ed the threshold, her heartbeat slowed. Her smile returned.
She would make Mistress proud. She had to. There was nothing else.
The interrogation room was a ten-by-ten square with four solid walls. A table appeared to take up most of the space. There were no windows, except for the small one in the door, dual pane with thin crisscrossing cables, designed to resist shattering. It was difficult to see through. A surveillance camera hung in the corner near the ceiling. The room was soundproof.
Detective Linda Jones sat on one side of the table. Jones had served in the department for eleven years. She was well-respected by her colleagues, known for her no-nonsense approach and doing whatever it took to catch the bad guys.
The detective’s long hair was brilliant red, her eyes a deep, unyielding blue. She was trim, always ed on the donuts. Despite her appearance she rarely dated. She had no social life because her job was her life.
Across the table from Jones sat a young female with a blank stare. Approximately twenty-three or twenty-four years old. Her head was shaved clean, her feet were bare, and a black-and-yellow leotard clung to her like hive markings. The detective noted a tattoo on the female’s inner left wrist. A female symbol, with the shape of a heart in place of the standard circle. The same tattoo as worn by the others.
This wasn’t an interrogation, just a debrief. A patrol car had spotted the female walking along the old two-lane highway on the outskirts of town with a group of similarly dressed women. When the cruiser pulled over, the group scattered. The officer managed to catch only one.
They hadn’t been doing anything illegal, just walking. But the rumors surrounding the commune in the foothills loomed large. Publicly, it was a curiosity. Privately, the department was convinced: something was happening up there. Something unnatural. Something they couldn’t quite prove.
Nineteen months of investigation had produced little more than interviews with women who all bore the same dreamy expression, the same serene tone, and, disturbingly, the same refusal to blink. They claimed to have found peace, purpose, and a love unlike anything on Earth. They spoke in near-unison:
“I love Mistress, and She loves me.”
When the DA requested a search warrant, the judge threw it out.
“You’ve been reading too much fetish smut,” he barked. “Keep your mind on your job.”
Jones was lead detective on the task force. There had been a good chance she wouldn’t have been on the task force at all. Her lieutenant hesitated give her the assignment over an assumed conflict of interest.
Just out of high school the detective’s older sister had dropped out of college and ed a cult. For the first couple of years, the family would receive cards from her sister on the twentieth of June. Wishing a glorious solstice. Without notice the cards were no longer delivered. No one in the family had seen or heard from her since.
Jones has convinced her lieutenant she held no bias and there would be no conflict. The detective had such a strong record that he allowed her to the task force. He never knew that Jones had lied.
“What’s your name?” Jones asked gently.
“Zeta Four,” the female replied, voice calm, vacant, euphoric.
Detective Jones looked again at the girl’s tattoo. The skin around it was still red—fresh. Maybe we caught this one before she was too far gone.
“That’s a beautiful tattoo. Is it new?” Jones attempted a different approach.
“I love Mistress with all my heart, always and forever.” Zeta’s fingers traced the ink with reverence. Her smile grew even more blissful.
Zeta cocked her head and stared directly into the detectivee’s eyes. “Why did you take me from Mistress? From my sisters? From my home?”
Jones took a breath before continuing. The word ‘Mistress’ had left a stain in the room.
“We just want to get to know you. Talk a little. You’re not under arrest. You’re free to leave whenever you wish,” Jones said, keeping her tone neutral.
Zeta paused, slightly tilting her chin up because her obedience had made her more free than the detective ever was.
“I choose to leave now,” she said. “I miss Mistress, and She misses me. I need to be home before devotion time.”
She stood up and glared at Jones.
As Zeta turned to leave, she noticed the red light of the security camera blinking. It felt as though it were winking at her. The thought pulled at something in her mind. Her thighs squeezed.
Her head tilted. Her eyes softened. She returned to her seat with grace.
“You’re kind. I like you,” she said. “What would you like to know?”
“Very well. Let’s go back to the top. What was your name before you were Zeta Four?”
Jones remained focused despite the woman’s sudden shift in demeanor.
“There is no before. There is only now. I don’t understand the question.” Zeta’s tone was defiant.
“Let me put it another way. What is the name on your birth certificate?”
“What’s a birth certificate?” Zeta furrowed her brow, she was serious.
“Fine. What does your Mistress feed you?” Surely, Jones thought, she must eat.
“Stuff,” Zeta answered matter-of-factly.
“Stuff? What kind of stuff?” Jones was growing tired of the games.
“Stuff. I eat stuff. All my sisters do too. We like it because Mistress says we do.” Zeta looked at her like she was the ignorant one.
“Where do you sleep?” Jones wasn’t getting much clarity. It was clear now: Zeta Four had been thoroughly conditioned. She thought what she was told to think. She acted as she was told to act. She was exactly what her Mistress made her be.
“I sleep with all my sexy sisters,” Zeta said with a flirty giggle, placing her hands on her breasts and wiggling her shoulders.
“Okay… Who are you really?” The question wasn’t on the list. Jones chose to be direct.
“I am,” Zeta whispered dreamily. “I am in love with Mistress. I am Her devoted slave. I am alive. I am free.”
Even Detective Jones, with all her composure and years on the force, began to come unfurled. She started to ask another question. Though Zeta cut her off before she got a word out.
“May I have a drink of water?”
Jones nodded. “Sure.” The cooler was just outside the room.
Once the door closed, Zeta retrieved a small vial containing a clear liquid from beneath her leotard, cloth-wrapped and sealed. She tucked it discreetly under the table.
When Jones returned, she handed her the water and sat down.
“Thank you,” Zeta said sweetly, taking a sip.
She studied the detective. Wondered what she would look like with her head and the area below her belly button shaved. Wondered what her new name would be.
Jones glanced at her notes.
Zeta stretched her leg beneath the table, slowly letting her toes graze the detective’s inner thigh.
The detective jumped up from her seat and leaned forward over the table. “We do not allow that manner of behavior here!”
Zeta smiled and raised her hand holding the vial near the detective’s chin. Squeezing the vial it let out a ‘crack’ like a glow stick, but no harsh smell. Instead, a warm scent filled the air. Spice. Exotic. Irresistible.
Jones inhaled once. Then again. The scent clung, strange and sweet Not unpleasant. But distracting. It clung to the back of her throat, sweet and spiced like autumn and incense. Her pulse fluttered, her body softened. Arousal bloomed. Her exposed skin began to glisten. Moisture gathered between her legs. Her muscles slackened, her spine pressing into the chair, then tensed, resisting the melt. Breath shallow, pupils dilating. She blinked hard, shook her head.
“What is that?” she asked, voice lower than she meant.
“Nothing to worry about,” Zeta said. “Just breathe. That’s it. Breathe for Me.”
No, Jones thought. Get a grip.
But her skin tingled. Her chest rose and fell too fast. A warm hum had settled low in her belly.
“That’s it. All relaxed now. I’d say your last little thought bubble just went pop.”
Zeta rose and stepped around the table, coming to stand before the detective. Her smile was serene, almost sweet, as she looked down.
“So, this is how this is going to unfold,” she purred. “Mistress’s fragrance is already mapping out your thoughts, rewiring your will in all the prettiest patterns. From here, it all happens naturally.”
She paced slowly, fingers trailing along the tabletop like a pianist warming up.
“I could wander around your office, poke through your files, see what kind of mischief I can get into… then come back to check if you’re fully caramelized. Golden. Sweet. Melting from the inside out.”
Zeta leaned in close, breath grazing the detective’s cheek.
“Or we can do something much more fun.”
She tilted her head, playful.
“I could take an exploratory journey. A careful, curious search for the most sensitive, most secret places on your body. Who knows what I might find? A little spot that sends a pulse up your spine… a soft sigh… a helpless moan.”
Her voice dropped to a near-whisper.
“And if I happen to discover a place that tips you into that… crescendo you most crave? Well, each time that happens, you’ll fall even deeper for Mistress. Deeper. And more exquisitely.”
Jones drifted, suspended in a dream spun of silk and surrender. Zeta’s voice shimmered at the edges of her thoughts, like silk on wet skin. Somewhere in the haze, she thought she ought to nod,, but even that was too much. Her limbs had grown heavy with bliss. It simply felt too good to let Mistress’s fragrance melt her mind like sugar on the tongue.
Zeta stepped closer. Jones tried to move back, but her body stayed still. A thought whispered, this is wrong, it was not loud enough.
“You’re drugging me,” she managed, a flicker of anger in her eyes.
“No, sweet girl,” Zeta said, brushing her fingers along the detective’s collarbone. “Mistress doesn’t drug. Mistress reveals.”
Jones clenched her jaw. “I’m not—”
Zeta placed a finger gently over her lips. “Shhh.” And the detective… went quiet.
Zeta took a seat on her lap, a whisper of weight, and blew slow breath along her neck. Jones moaned without meaning to.
“That’s the spirit Mistress wants to see from her new inductees,” Zeta crooned, her voice sweet and wicked all at once.
Each button she unfastened with unhurried reverence, as though unlocking a sacred seal. Every one a line crossed. When the last one slipped loose, she slid the fabric from Jones’s shoulders, folding it down like unveiling a gift already promised.
Jones didn’t stop her. Didn’t protest. But her hands clenched at her sides. Her thighs pressed together. When the blouse fell, she didn’t reach for it. Just stared ahead, breathing in that scent again. It shouldn’t feel this good.
Her resolve hung by a thread. Say something. But the words wouldn’t come. It was as if her voice had been wrapped in velvet, softened, muted.
Then came the bra. Zeta unclasped it with a practiced grace, letting it fall like a discarded thought. There was no longer any need to lift or separate, nothing needed containing anymore.
Zeta dragged a single finger across the detective’s chest in lazy zigzags, as though mapping a path she already knew by heart. The trail left a wake of goosebumps in its ing, her touch barely there—an echo of , a tease of sensation.
Her fingertip came to rest in the valley between the detective’s breasts. She paused, letting her gaze linger.
“Well now,” Zeta purred, “aren’t you a fast learner.”
Please, please don’t touch me there! The detective’s inner voice became too soft. She needed to scream. She failed…
The twin peaks stood at attention, flushed and eager. Zeta tilted her head in mock iration.
“Mistress does so adore enthusiasm.”
“You know what is really cool sister? When you no longer have the burden to think for yourself. Mistress will instruct you to have correct thoughts and she will pull all of your strings and you will only be able to follow along. The best part? You think you feel good now, you are incapable of imagining how good it will feel when you obey. You will be obsessed sitting on pins and needles just waiting for the opportunity to obey.”
Zeta laid her thumbs on both of Jones’ nipples and gave a tight squeeze. The detective’s back arched and her body stiffened.
“Well, well, well. I suppose there are times when you find what you’re looking for in the first place you look.” Zeta giggled.
The slippery tip of her tongue teased Jones’ nipple, lips began to suck.
Jones felt unmistakable sensations rolling over her body, A shiver caressed her spine… The pleasure was unbearable…
She moaned the only thought left in her melting mind. ‘Please… take me, Mistress. I need to be Yours.’
Zeta smiled, her new sister was born.
Later, the surveillance footage showed Jones sitting in the chair. Her hair was matted, clinging to her scalp as if aftermath still lingered. She was topless, wearing only a skirt, her feet were bare. The floor was littered with the remnants of resistance, blouse, bra, badge. The bald female offered her hand. Jones accepted the offering and rose from the chair.
They walked out of the room hand in hand, fingers interlocked. The woman who once led interrogations now followed. Down the hallway. They walked out the back door. And into a waiting van.
No urgency. No struggle.
Inside the van, Zeta sat between two others in identical leotards. Across from her, Detective Jones wore earbuds. Her eyes were glazed. She breathed shallowly, drinking in the voice only she could hear.
Zeta Four watched with pride. She imagined the detective’s head smooth and gleaming. Her new name: Zeta Twelve.
She smiled. Her fingers entwined with her sisters’. Her skin hummed with electricity, her purpose fulfilled.
Mistress was proud. Zeta Four had followed her training to perfection.
