Cosplay Handler

Marianne sat down at the table alone, as she often did. She pulled out her phone and opened a group chat labeled “Con Vent”, which she stared at for a moment. Her thumb hovered over the segment of touchscreen her phone had in place of a keyboard- as all modern phones did- and seemed to hesitate. She stared for a full ten seconds before sighing, pressing the rest mode button instead, and returning the phone to its resting place in her pocket. She took one bite of her burger, then another, then another. It didn’t have bacon like she’d asked for, but that was fine. She didn’t have to pay for it anyway, thanks to her meal plan. She just sat there with her meal in a suffocating quiet.
The dining hall around her wasn’t exactly silent. Other students buzzed in and out of the building as always, and Marianne paid them no mind. The background noise of this shuffling had no bearing on her at the time. After a few more bites of her burger Marianne pulled her phone out again.
Holding her phone in one hand while still eating with the other, she opened a photo album labeled “Takucon 2019.” She scrolled through photos of girls in various ornate cosplays, her eyes glazing over with something resembling longing. Her thumb flicked up at irregular intervals to send one photo cascading past the screen after another. Her eyes glanced quickly- almost imperceptibly- from the phone to her chest and back.
She noticed one of her suitemates in the corner of her vision. She snapped out of whatever daze she’d been in, tucked her phone back into her pocket, and scarfed down the rest of her meal. It was a Friday, after all, and there was no point feeling like this. She stood up and put her tray on the conveyor belt for dirty dishes. After walking back to where she’d sat and slinging her backpack over her shoulder, she sighed again. She trudged towards the entrance.
The convention was later today! She should have been feeling excited, so why did she feel like this? She opened the door for a girl on the way on, received a thank you, then courteously replied with a chipper you’re welcome. She saw two guys approaching and stayed put to hold the door for them. Two more thank yous. She let them her and shut the door behind her. Another sigh barged out of her lips, this one involuntary.
“Are you sure you don’t mind?” Asked Rose as Marianne took her bag with a smile.
“My sister always makes me carry everything and I actually like you, so no, I don’t mind!” Marianne replied, beaming. She had a backpack on her back, one bag hanging off each shoulder, two dangling from her right forearm, and now another bag in her right hand. Her left hand held her friends’ phones and maps.
“Nooo, don’t say that, I feel baaad!” Rose whimpered, her eyes softening with concern. That care was like catnip to Marianne. Seeing someone that beautiful look at her that softly made the girl’s heart flutter violently in her chest. She felt like someone being freely given water and shade after getting lost on a horrible summer day. She would kill if Rose asked her to, and she doubted she would feel conflicted about it.
“It’s okay, I prommy!” Marianne squeaked, and she meant it. She felt happiest when she was doing nice things for her friends, and besides, as the only member of the group not cosplaying, it only made sense that she be the designated pack mule.
Okay, the group didn’t use that term. They called her the supply convoy, like in Fire Emblem, and she found that term endearing. It made her sound robust and respected in a way that she didn’t get much at home. They were nice to her, and she wanted nothing more than to be useful enough to deserve it. She looked over at Violet and Lily posing for photos and marveled over how damn cute her friends were.
Rose walked a few steps away and posed for a photo. The girl who’d asked for it quickly snapped one or two using her phone, smiled and politely thanked Rose for the privilege, then walked off. Rose came back to Marianne, who stood in place smiling. Both watched Lily and Violet finish having their photos taken.
“Are you still coming with me to be my cosplay handler at the photoshoot tomorrow?” Rose asked as the others made their way back. She smiled gently at Marianne, her expression warm and welcoming. Marianne loved that smile. It always made her day feel so much brighter. It almost distracted her from what Rose had just called her.
“Y-yeah! Of course!” Marianne answered in a high pitched voice full of positive emotion. She held out Violet’s and Lily’s phones, which the two reclaimed and graciously thanked her for holding. Rose abruptly gasped.
“I’m sorry! I forgot—!” Rose said as she gracefully took her bag back from Marianne. “You didn’t need to just keep holding it!” Coming from some people that might have been a barb. Marianne didn’t care. She just smiled as she returned the bag.
“I don’t mind,” Marianne repeated with a smile. She glanced up at a nearby clock. It was an analogue one, so reading the time from where she stood took her a second or so.
“It’s twelve fifteen, about,” said Lily. Lily was the shortest of the group, with cutely speckled hazel eyes and short hair a rich, planty sort of dark brown. One wouldn’t be able to tell, presently, on of the cosplay wig she had on. “The starts at one. You guys wanna just people watch?”
“Sounds good to me,” answered Violet, her face buried under a white wig. The quietest and second shortest member of the group, Violet stood with her arms down in front of her, one hand clasping the other wrist. She swished her body gently and looked elsewhere. Her bright blue eyes seemed to contrast her subdued personality, much like the dark blue dye of her hair (not that you could see her hair, presently).
“Oh no, your wig!” Rose fussed, running over to her friend. Marianne watched as Rose bounced over to Violet and started manipulating it with her slender, careful fingers. Watching the tall, stacked blonde work always made Marianne feel strange. She loved seeing it- she loved seeing Rose in general, honestly- but as Rose delicately moved the hair out of Violet’s eyes, found and adjusted pins, did all of that fashion sort of thing, it always left Marianne with…some kind of feeling. She recognized the simple pleasure of getting to look at a beautiful young woman who considered her a good friend, and the slightly less simple satisfaction of seeing a craft executed calmly by someone who commanded great skill with it, but those two alone didn’t explain…all of it.
“Hmm….I think some of them fell out. We’ll have to go fix it up in the bathroom. Lily, you mind coming with?” Rose asked over her shoulder.
“Sure thing!” Violet answered. The three all looked Marianne’s way but only Rose and Violet spoke.
“We need to fix up Lily’s wig, so we’re gonna dip into the bathroom. It shouldn’t take long!” Exclaimed Rose. She sounded almost apologetic, blurting out that last part. “I hope that’s okay with you…?”
“Yeah, of course,” Marianne answered, her smile unwavering.
“We’re gonna- need the cosplay bag back though,” Lily squeaked. Her voice was high-pitched and soft. Marianne absolutely adored Lily’s voice. It sounded so sweet and cute.
“Oh. Right, aaaa!” Marianne fumbled for a second with the various other bags hanging off of her. She turned into a flurry of rustling fabric and crinkling bag-plastic as she attempted to finagle the biggest object’s straps off her arms without dislodging all of the others. A good ten or twenty seconds of this awkward struggle ed before Marrianne managed to get the backpack into her hand. “Here you go!” She said with a half-assed smile as she held it out. Rose took it and all three ducked past a door into one of the convention center’s large bathrooms.
Marianne backed to a wall and leaned on it. The downpouring of sunshine she always felt around her friends started to subside. She was no stranger to abrupt shifts in her mood but this one seemed pretty manageable, at least. No sudden crushing depressive feelings, no abrupt realization that at the end of all this she had to g- ahhh, nope!
She caught herself! She smiled a half-assed little smile, but it quickly went limp and collapsed into a frown. She fidgeted as well as she could with the various bags of her friends’ purchases dangling off of her. Marianne beat back the vague cloud of dark, murky emotion she could feel starting to brew in her head. It got on her nerves, quite frankly, that she was like this. Living in your head wasn’t supposed to feel like babysitting an especially uncooperative child, last she checked.
A few minutes of this time ed before she started to pace back and forth. She didn’t think about possibly getting looks. It wasn’t likely she would, anyway, given all the stuff going on around her- she was attending an anime convention, after all. She looked around, saw people in cosplay flitting all about- even if she mostly just noticed the girls- and generally found ways to the time.
She checked her phone a few times. At one point she noticed a text message but ignored it. Nothing too important. Besides, she didn’t feel like checking if it might be spam- or worse, family. She tried to check her phone again- Discord, specifically- but her connection was terrible on of the convention’s massive influx of people overwhelming whatever bandwidth was available. Her pacing grew more erratic as she waited. Hands burrowed into her pockets. She felt her phone buzz but was swiftly distracted when she heard a door open near her.
The girls left the bathroom and found her quickly. All three approached her smiling. Violet’s wig wasn’t covering her face anymore, so you could see her dainty features and the little mole on her left cheekbone.
“Thank you so much!” Said Rose, her face lit up bright by a big gorgeous smile. Looking at it made Marianne feel physically warmer, like Rose’s face was a little sun or something. The sensation chased off the ugly brew in Marianne’s head. “You didn’t have to stay right in this spot, though!”
But you’re clearly happy I did, Marianne remarked in her head. Why should she not do whatever made her friends happiest? It seemed ridiculous to her. Of course she stayed right where she was, as long as it took. What else would she do?
“Want me to take your backpack again?” Marianne asked, smiling. Rose thanked her and gave it over. Marianne put it on happily. She loved when Rose said thank you. It made her feel warm and fuzzy. The dark feeling from a few minutes ago felt small and distant.
Marrianne snuck a peek at her phone. She’d accidentally opened the text message and clicked a link. She hurriedly closed the tab and blocked the number. Wait, had her phone downl-
“You coming with us, Mari Berry?” Asked Violet. Marrianne’s heart practically exploded with joy- all else disappeared from her mind.
“Yes yes!” Marianne answered, shoving her phone in her pocket as she hurried along after her friends. “Coming!”
Marianne sat down by herself. She had stayed behind when the others left the vendor’s hall, and subsequently gotten a couple cool cosplay photos. She held even more bags now, including one purchase of her own: a pokemon stuffedie for her girlfriend. She carefully set the bags aside as she scarfed down some mediocre noodles that had been more expensive than they ought to. The people around the room faded into a din in the background, a lot like what it felt like eating at the university.
“May I sit here?” Asked a familiar voice, though it felt familiar in more of a deja vu sort of way than a warm one. Marianne glanced towards the speaker and saw a girl who’d been a classmate the previous semester. They’d been in…psychology, was it, together…?
Marianne failed to think of an excuse to say no on time. She sputtered out a startled little yes, and her former classmate sat down. They started eating their own food- pizza, which looked to be about gas station quality, but which had definitely been much more expensive. Marianne awkwardly finished eating.
“Those bags are all yours?” The other girl asked with a knowing smirk. Her eyes- blood red, probably from colored s- bore into Marianne with unshakable interest. Marianne held all of this young woman’s attention.
“I…um…no, those are my…friends’...one of them is mine…” Marianne whimpered back. She had no idea why she felt so small all of a sudden. Being small and unnoticed was good, being small and unnoticed meant being in her element, but being small and observed? That felt like being prey. She was almost sweating.
“I see,” the girl says. “You’re carrying everything, then?”
“More or less,” Marianne choked out. She felt unsure why she had answered the question. She knew she ought to eject this person from her presence, but…
“I saw you at a different con, too,” the former classmate continues, “with, uh…the one girl from queer club and her two friends…they’re all named after flowers, right! Funny how those worked out, isn’t it neat?” The mostly-a-stranger continued. “But the funny thing is, those are their birth names! They didn’t even choose that schema, it was entirely coincidence. It’s the kinda thing that makes annoying people credit God, isn’t it?”
“I um…yes?” Marianne replied. She felt creeped out but wasn’t sure whether to put this up to stalking or not.
“And they’re all gorgeous, too,” the girl continues. “I’d wager lots of even more annoying people would tell you that you’re lucky for getting to hang out with them.”
“I…guess…?”
The former classmate leaned in more. Her eyes held Marianne’s in a vice. “That sounded uncertain. Do you agree with them…?”
“What…do you mean by—?” Marianne wheezed out, feeling totally cornered. The people flitting all about continued with their days, not seeming to notice her. What would usually be a blessing felt suffocating.
“Why should you be lucky to be friends with them?” The girl asked with a dark smile on her face. “Here you are, carrying all their shit like a loyal mule, lighting up every time they speak to you, happy to do anything to help.”
“How do you…?” Marianne forced out, feeling even more cornered.
“Because I know your type,” the girl hissed, “but that shouldn’t be! I listened to you last year. You’re a brilliant, outgoing, confident top and you shouldn’t be letting them use you.”
“They’re not using me!” Marianne spat. She didn’t sound quite as sure as her word choice suggested. The other girl got up, walked around the table, and lowered herself into the chair next to Marianne. She was close now, uncomfortably close, but Marianne could neither move nor demand that the other girl move.
“Maybe not intentionally. They seem a lovely bunch,” the other girl purred. Marianne realized abruptly that her conversational partner was cosplaying as well- she was dressed as the princess Althea from Live A Live. “But you’re clearly an outsider. Your name doesn’t match, you’re the only one not in cosplay, you aren’t even wearing girl clothes. You don’t consider yourself one of them and it shows. And I figure—”
“Fuck off.”
The girl blinked, taken aback. She looked genuinely hurt. Suddenly Marianne felt her mind tripping over itself twisting into knots thinking of how to apologize. She stood up but the other girl did too.
“My- my bad,” they stammered. “I come on way too strong and- have a wonderful con, bye!” The girl scurried off. Marianne sat back down and looked at her phone. There was a new app- presumably from the link. She uninstalled (not just deleted!) it and checked her texts. The group had gone back to their hotel room. She finished her noodles, tossed them, and grabbed her menagerie of bags.
“Oh my god! Oh god!” Rose exclaimed as soon as she saw Marianne open the door. She scurried over and helped take bags and things from Marianne. “I didn’t realize- you didn’t have to carry everything!” Her voice was soft but Marianne still felt like she was being scolded. Marianne forced herself not to flinch. “I’m SO sorry. I’ll pay for your food tonight, Jesus…”
“It’s okay!” Marianne chuckled, hating to see Rose’s face scrunched up even with worry. “I’m happy to help!” She desperately wanted Rose not to be upset. Any of the girls, honestly.
“Did you get yourself anything?” Asked Lily.
“Just a pokemon stuffed animal for my girlfriend,” replied Marianne, tossing the bag in question next to the duffle bag she used for a suitcase.
She collapsed onto one of the room’s two beds, happy not to be on the floor this time. Granted, her girlfriend wasn’t there, but still.
“God, she’s so sweet,” Lily mumbled to the room. Marianne blushed and hid her face.
“Heyyyy,” Marianne protested.
“But you are!” Piped up Violet. “You’re so nice! Thank you for carrying everything today.”
“You’re welcoooome,” Marianne replied, her face hot and red. Her discomfort came through audibly, and the rest of the room went quiet. Shame crept down her scalp into her ears, then continued along down her spine.
The girls got to work making finishing touches to their cosplays. Marianne sat on the bed trying not to feel too out of place as she fidgeted and looked at her phone. But then she saw…
Handl.R? Was that the spam thing she’d uninstalled earlier?
Fuck…
“Damnit…” Marianne muttered, uninstalling it a second time. She really hoped this would fix the problem. Maybe she hadn’t sat with it long enough last time. She didn’t want to think about the possible consequences of malware. She laid down and slowly, surrounded by the pleasant sound of the girls at work, she started to get sleepy.
“Poor thing’s wiped out,” she overheard Rose say at one point. Rose sounded like she felt guilty. Marianne didn’t understand. “Do you think she’d mind if we tucked her in?”
Marianne desperately wanted to call out and request exactly that, but she didn’t want to make things weird so she kept her mouth shut.
“She doesn’t usually like to be touched, I don’t think,” Lily answered. “Maybe just put a blanket over her.”
“Oh, good idea!”
Marianne woke up with a blanket over her and could hear the girls still working. She got up, took her pills, got lightly chastised for dry-swallowing them, and waited for a chance to use the shower. One came soon enough, and she showered as quickly as possible. She brushed her teeth, she got dressed. Normal, unassuming guy clothes. The same sort she’d been wearing since high school.
She grabbed her phone, stuffed it into her pocket, and smiled.
“Oh, can you take a picture of me?” Rose asked.
“Of course!” Squealed Marianne, always more than eager to take a photograph of Rose (for very normal reasons). She opened her camera app and…huh?
Handl.R was back. Marianne clicked it to uninstall but opened it by accident. It seemingly just opened the camera app. Whatever, she could investigate that later.
She looked Rose’s way and froze.
“How do I look?” Asked Rose. Marianne’s eyes widened and she felt blood surge to her face.
Rose’s tall, slender body stood mostly exposed. She smiled a warm welcoming smile, the hotel’s light bouncing gently off the pink tones of her nose, thighs, and fingers. A purple bikini snugly embraced her breasts and hips, emphasizing her ample chest and curves. A beautiful mane of luxurious, wavy purple hair- or at least a wig of that description- fell behind her, draped over her shoulders.
“O-oh, um. Gorgeous, ahhh!” Marianne squealed. A confident Rose cocked her hip to one side and smugly threw an arm over her shoulder. “Glad to hear it!” Marianne felt like a pervert taking a photo of this. She had permission- it hadn’t been her idea, even- but she still felt like she was doing something wrong.
“Is something the matter?” Asked Rose, her sexy pose and flirty smile melting into gentle concern (and her in-character facade going down the drain with them).
“No, not at all!” Marianne mewed and took a photo. The camera flashed, more intensely than normal. Not brighter, strangely, but something seemed…off.
“Ohhhhh,” moaned Rose in a tone that did things to Marianne that she didn’t care to it. The cosplayer’s eyes widened and went vacant. The light behind them dimmed a little and her mouth widened into a vague, dreamy smile. “That felt….good. Thank you so much.”
“Of…course…” Marianne answered, her mind elsewhere. She was staring at the screen of her phone, where the image of her friend held her attention.
“The photoshoot is…soon…” Rose moaned happily. She sounded ive and docile in a way that seemed odd for her. “Are you ready, handler…?”
Handler.
She sounded deliberately horny about it this time. Marianne unconsciously crossed her legs to hide how that had affected her. As hot as Rose’s expression was, this was out of character right…?
“Um…yes?” Marianne answered, tearing her eyes from her phone. The real Rose looked even more beautiful than she usually did. She had such soft, warm, pretty skin, such big boobs, such darling eyes…
“Okay…I’m ready when you are, Handler…”
“O-okay, but…you don’t have to act like that,” Marianne stammered, “normal is fine.”
“You’d rather…normal?”
“Yes…?”
“Of course!” Rose’s eyes snapped back to their usual sharply vivacious brightness. She smiled as she grabbed some things and pushed them in Marianne’s direction. “Thank you for being my handler again, by the way. You’re the best!”
Marianne took the things being offered. Rose’s phone, a little bag of props, Rose’s backpack, and a spray bottle.
“Thank you,” Marianne answered, closing Handl.R and trying to pretend nothing weird was going on.
